jwilkerson -> RE: Tonnage sunk by SSs (5/1/1923) (8/16/2006 5:19:53 AM)

How do you classify when a ship was "sunk" by a sub? Sometimes the ship doesn't sink until many days later and many miles later, enroute to home base. Other times a sub might sink a ship which was badly damaged by other means first, etc. etc. I guess I'm trying to say, sometimes the classification process might be "fuzzy", so curious how you're handling this.

Rysyonok -> RE: Tonnage sunk by SSs (5/1/1923) (8/16/2006 6:38:09 PM)

A sub had to have delivered the final blow, as confirmed by combatreport.txt and sunk ship listing. That's why I keep all the combat reports as in some cases I had to go back 2 months.

:)

[&:] Could you attach a little more narrative as to what the reports represent, lessons learned, etc. My knowledge of the game it still too limited to appreciate what I'm seeing.

Thanks

Rysyonok -> May 8, 1923 (9/12/2006 4:53:39 PM)

This time raiders get to run into IJN destroyers, a battle I was longing for quite some time, ever since IJN CL raids in the Marshalls in late 1922. And the result was as expected: converted CLs with their main caliber range of 24,000 vandalize any and all destroyer opposition. I was a bit surprised at how short were the battles; still, 9 hits to 1 in return are something to celebrate. Of course, the downside of using converted CLs is their weak armor. The single shell hit that they did take incurred 22 in system damage. Ouch.

There are 49 CLs afloat around Tokyo. That's one of every DD and PC that IJN still has :)

Rysyonok -> May 9, 1923 (9/20/2006 3:32:31 AM)

IJA keeps assaulting my poor little advance force near Asahigawa... and once again having an HQ nearby makes all the difference as printed '931' assault value is actually in the neighborhood of 1400 (one division is still attached to the wrong HQ - I don't have enough PP to fix that).

Watching an IJN vessel hit a mine in Korea was priceless.

Pkunzipper -> RE: May 10, 1923 (9/20/2006 10:24:36 AM)

Poor raiders....[:-] it seems you sent them, on purpose, in a only way mission, keeping them on torpedo bombers range and for too much time on the same waters (this allowed the jap to intercept them)... any reason behind that? Are you disappointed with their performances?

Japanese submarines are out-performing yours in the last weeks... What about using 5-6 subs as screen for your raider TFs?

Rysyonok -> RE: May 10, 1923 (9/21/2006 6:19:32 AM)

Well, I am using about 15 subs as a screen for my raiders... on my strategic map the whole Japan is appearing to be cocooned in light green dots... they are just not hitting anything. Subs are purely a defensive weapon. And I am on the offensive.

As for torpedo bomber range... I got no choice. I sit 2 hexes out, and I can't intercept anything. I move to 1 hex... Actually, if you look at the numbers, the battle took place 2 hexes away from Tokyo.

Am I disappointed in their performance? No. I am disappointed in those unrealistic minefields which prohibited me from attacking any major Japanese island. I am disappointed in USA OOB with divisions starting the game with 60% of their artillery and no tanks. I am disappointed in those pesky base forces - I seriously believe they throw the game balance off in favor of the defender.

But I am glad I am learning all of this now so that Cautionaries II will be that much better ;)

Rysyonok -> RE: May 10, 1923 (9/22/2006 3:57:41 AM)

Both sides, I think. And I strongly believe the scenario is going to be more realistic and more enjoyable.

If not... I always welcome feedback.

Rysyonok -> May 11, 1923 (9/22/2006 4:38:28 AM)

More raider rampage. Having those long-range hulks with huge shell stockpiles really pays off. I just got to keep them out of aircraft and dreadnought range... South China Sea?

IJN BB/CL group keeps sneaking around Western Marshalls... probably heading to Ponape. I can't say I like that. USN bombardment group at Ponape is down to 69% ammo.

Rysyonok -> May 15, 1923 (10/6/2006 12:48:59 AM)

More carnage. As always, American land gunners seem to be much better than their IJA counterparts. I wonder why.

IJA is about to get another surprise, too, as 4 AA regiments are only a week away from Hokkaido bloodbath. This by far shall be the first time an AA unit made it to the battlefield.

Rysyonok -> May 19, 1923 (10/9/2006 5:58:26 AM)

Yet another fight proving the importance of 'retirement allowed' setting at proper times and useless of stacking several fleets in the same hex.

USN: 2 raiders sank, 8 more out of commission pretty much until the end of the game.
IJN: 3 DD out for a month or two, 1 more for a few weeks.
