Rysyonok -> August 13, 1922 (2/18/2006 9:15:26 PM)

August 13, 1922

3rd and 4th hits for USN SS R-10 at San Jose: DD Amatsukaze (Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage then again Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage). The destroyer sinks. 73rd IJN casualty.

IJN SS No. 43 catches 4 depth charges at Mili, 2 of which are direct hits. It catches on fire and sinks. 74th IJN casualty.

USN is starting to run into a major problem: fuel shortages. There is 4,000 at Pearl Harbor; 40,000 at Johnston. Baker has been out for a week, but 24,000 are a few days away. 3 TK with 4,500 still on board are turned around from Johnston to go to Pearl Harbor. There are only 9 TKs; the next ones are 5 months away.

Rysyonok -> August 14, 1922 (2/19/2006 12:11:11 AM)

August 14, 1922

(I don't have the combat save so this is my best guess).

USN DD Fuller is scuttled once flotation damage reaches 93, the 4th USN casualty of Baker engagements. 58th USN casualty.

One AP bound for Pearl Harbor receives several shells, presumably from IJN SS UB-143 (O7).

USN subs are starting to pull out of PI. With only 2100 fuel left, I barely have enough to refuel all of them - some still as far as Hong Kong - and send them home. The less damaged ones will swing by Japanese ports on their voyage home - Takao, Kagoshima, Tokio, Osaka...

BBs at Baker are serving as Milk Cows. Fuel is 24 hours away.

Rysyonok -> August 15, 1922 (2/19/2006 5:30:56 AM)

August 15, 1922

IJN DD Yanagi sinks. It's hard to guess who hit him without the save, but my best bet based on locations and torpedo type is on S-32 - the first hit for that sub. 75th IJN casualty - and 25th destroyer casualty.

IJN SS No. 10 earns 5 depth charges (one smashes its fuel tanks) and catches on fire at Mili.

IJN SS No. 37 catches 7 (one hits the bridge) at Johnston island.

2 TK with fuel make it to Baker, but Pearl is down to 380 units with no future shipments - there are 5 TK that are yet to depart for Mare island there.

The organized retreat from PI is turning into disorganized panic as Roxas fuel stores run out and the only depot left is Jolo. Mines and torpedoes can only be reloaded at a port with both supplies and fuel, regardless of quantity of milk cows present.

USN SS R-19 earns its first hit: TK Kaizyo Maru (Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage)

The 25 DDs sunk by USN (82 still to go):

Rysyonok -> P.S. (2/19/2006 5:36:30 AM)

18" Mk7 torpedoes - R-class subs
21" Mk8 torpedoes - Clemson/Wickes DDs
21" Mk10 torpedoes - S-class subs
4" Mk9 guns - Clemson/Wickes DDs

Rysyonok -> The Marshalls and USN DDs (2/19/2006 5:57:17 AM)

DDs on active duty: 59 (29 - Mili, 30 - en route to Jaluit)
DDs on ASW duty: 10 at Baker
DDs in reserve: 10 at Baker
DDs sent home for repairs with orange/red damage: 13 (1 just off Baker, 12 already at Pearl)
DDs elsewhere on the map not mentioned above: 28 (2 with orange/red damage)

Rysyonok -> August 16, 1922 (2/19/2006 8:00:27 AM)

August 16, 1922

TK Kaizyo Maru capsizes - 76th IJN casualty.

IJA lands at Roxas.

Submarines are leaving PI; 10 units wih 5500+ fuel are already eastbound, the rest will refuel at Jolo.

Rysyonok -> August 17, 1922 (2/19/2006 4:51:41 PM)

August 17, 1922

USN SS R-3 eats a depth charge at Roxas, but damage is minimal.

IJA takes Roxas.

Second hit for USN SS R-4: AK Sinno Maru (Shell hits 7, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage)

More submarines are leaving PI.

4th US Army airplane crashes, no survivors. Concentration of engineers at Johnston made the rest of bases scramble for aviation support.

Rysyonok -> August 18-19, 1922 (2/19/2006 9:45:58 PM)

August 18, 1922

Nothing.

August 19, 1922

IJN AK Sinno Maru capsizes - courtesy of an old hit by R-4. 77th IJN ship to go down.

IJN SS No. 12 catches a depth charge at Jaluit - mere rattle.

IJN SS No. 27 catches 2 at Mili - engines hit. When I sent those ships out there out of pure boredom I had no idea they are going to become such submarine magnets! The first week of cruising the Marshalls earned USN one dead IJN sub and seriously maimed another one. There are 2 squads at Mili and 2 at Jaluit; 2 more replenishing at Baker and 2 more on standby.

IJA units are a hex away from Jolo, the last stand of USN in PI. Most subs are already on the way home; 3 are protecting Jolo and 6 still need to refuel from Milk Cows - the fuel depot is empty.

6th hit for USN SS S-14: AK Kaisyo Maru (Shell hits 2, on fire) north of Luzon.

4th hit for USN SS S-34: ML Sokuten Maru (Torpedo hits 1, on fire) @ Kwajalein.

Rysyonok -> August 20, 1922 (2/20/2006 3:23:07 AM)

August 20, 1922

IJN finally makes a contact with USN AS Rainbow, the backbone behind all PI submarine operations for the last two months.

quote:

Night Time Surface Combat, near Jolo at 38,59
Japanese Ships
DD Nagatsuki, Shell hits 15, on fire
Allied Ships
AS Rainbow, Shell hits 14, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

(there were 23 USN AK/AP present, but they merely watched)

Rainbow - ~25 sys/flt and some fires. Nagatsuki... by the end of the battle the only thing still in working order above waterline was one of the 12pdr guns and conning tower. Everything else was smashed to pieces ;)

IJA lands at Ormoc.

All SS but one are supplied enough to make it home. Sadly, their path will take them right by Eniwetok. The last sub will have to catch up the Milk Cow Train on its way home... I sincerely doubt any of those 24 auxiliary ships will make it to Johnston.

Independently sail and path them ... and I'd say most of them will make it ...

Rysyonok -> RE: August 20, 1922 (2/20/2006 3:46:33 AM)

I'll probably have to.

Let's see what shape Rainbow is going to be in after a couple of turns... if she controls flooding, then I may need everyone else to shield her.

What I want to know is how did that DD jump across 15 subs in its path unnoticed...

Rysyonok -> August 21, 1922 (2/20/2006 7:03:22 AM)

August 21, 1922

5th hit for USN SS S-34 - it becomes the 7th sub to earn "ace" status - ML Katashima Maru @ Kwajalein (Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage). It sinks immediatelty. 78th IJN casualty.

6th hit for USN SS S-17 - AP Kaedesan Maru @ Jolo (Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage)

IJA lands at Jolo.

IJA captures Ormoc.

The AK/AP from Asiatic fleet will pass below New Guinea which should make their trip very safe.

Rysyonok -> August 22, 1922 (2/21/2006 2:34:15 AM)

August 22, 1922

AP Kaedesan Maru capsizes. 79th IJN casualty.

IJN SS No. 62 catches a mine at Majuro - on fire, heavy damage. I love my DMs :) Just 2 missions, 400 mines, and already the third victim.

IJN SS No. 14 catches 3 depth charges at Jaluit and SS No. 45 2 at Mili, but they merely rattle the vessels.

IJA takes Jolo. There are no more USN bases in PI, save for half a dozen beaches.

Rysyonok -> August 23-25, 1922 (2/22/2006 2:57:03 AM)

August 23, 1922

6th hit for USN SS S-34 at Kwajalein: ML Toshima Maru (Torpedo hits 1, on fire)

IJN SS No. 18 catches 4 DCs at Jaluit and is aflame.

August 24, 1922

IJN SS No. 15 slams a torpedo in DD Claxton (Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage) receiving 8 DCs in return. Destroyer is flooding fast... not going to make it.

August 25, 1922

IJN SS No. 12 gets a DC at Jaluit.

IJN SS No. 33 gets 6 DCs at Mili and is on fire.

IJN SS No. 41 gets 3 DCs at Jaluit.

Asiatic fleet is safely circling New Guinea from the south.

Fuel is on the way to Pearl; but it's not going to be there for 2 weeks.

All available DDs are scrambled for the cat-and-mouse games with IJN subs in the Marshalls.

Rysyonok -> August 26, 1922 (2/22/2006 4:22:29 AM)

August 26, 1922

3rd IJN submarine sinks: No. 62. 80th IJN casualty... all because of a small American minefield in Majuro. Go DMs!

IJN SS No. 41 slams a torpedo in DD Tatnall (Torpedo hits 1, on fire) receiving a DC in return. 50/50 for the destroyer. Sys/Flt in high 40s.

Rysyonok -> August 27, 1922 (2/23/2006 1:17:42 AM)

August 27, 1922

Slow.

USN SS S-4 puts 2 shells into AK Heimei Maru in Tokyo harbor. 8th hit for the sub.

DD Claxton's Flt reaches 88... a scuttle-to-be. IJN torpedoes hurt a lot - when they hit.

Asiatic fleet is sailing home triumphantly, split into four sections by speed. For some reason 11-knot ships are by now 700+ miles ahead of 8-, 9-, and 10-knot sections.

The first invasion force sets sail: a regiment of Hawaiian division bound for Mili.

Rysyonok -> August 28, 1922 (2/23/2006 4:20:25 AM)

August 28, 1922

The worst day for USN to date.

Fast-minelaying taskforce hits a minefield at Wotje; 2 ships are heavily damaged, the rest rush home, their payload still aboard.

IJN battleships ambush American destroyers at Jaluit. Daytime, from 15,000 to 24,000 yards - most USN ships were smashed before they could fire a single shot.

To make matters even worse, the invasion fleet is spotted by IJN subs just hours away from Johnston island.

Rysyonok -> August 29, 1922 (2/23/2006 6:38:41 AM)

August 29, 1922

USN attempted a comeback for yesterday. Sadly, it was more huff and puff than actual results. Two DD TFs sent in pursuit of IJN Battleship group found nothing.

USN SS O-16: First hit @ Kwajalein: ML Kuroshima Maru (Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage). Sinks immediately, 82nd IJN casualty.

USN SS R-25: Sixth hit NW of Kwajalein: ML Kurokami Maru (Torpedo hits 1, on fire) Asiatic fleet submarines paying Marshalls a friendly visit on their way home @ Johnston or Baker.

USN SS S-4: Ninth hit @ Tokyo: TK Manju Maru (Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, on fire) The fireworks resulting from burning cargo were very pleasant to see; who knows, maybe this is going to strand IJN BBs on some remote atoll.

USN SS S-16: Third and fourth hits @ Kagoshima: AP Anyo Maru (Torpedo hits 1, on fire then Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage)

IJN SS No. 36 gets 6 DCs @ Johnston - heavy damage. Bridge flooded. IJN has 3 SSs in the area - may my SC-2 Martins enjoy the experience they are about to receive...

IJN SS No. 41 gets 2 DCs @ Jaluit. Misses.

jwilkerson -> RE: Battle of Jaluit, part 2 (2/23/2006 9:15:30 AM)

Ah, so the antidote for USN Super DDs ... is ... of course ... IJN Pre-dreadnoughts and old Armored Cruisers !!!

[;)]

Rysyonok -> RE: Battle of Jaluit, part 2 (2/24/2006 1:17:11 AM)

It's all about quantities. Baker island battles saw 3-5 DD squads; Jaluit had 2. The third one didn't engage, even when I sent it in pursuit...

Hey, for a daytime battle beyond the range of DD guns those tin cans did excellent...

Rysyonok -> August 30, 1922 (2/24/2006 3:26:28 AM)

August 30, 1922

USN SS H-4 sinks CA Tokiwa just south of Kwajalein (Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage). 83rd IJN casualty.

USN R-25 gets 2 DCs at Kwajalein and catches on fire. Third sub to be hit by IJB.

Seven lost DDs for four torpedo hits and a lot of hope - there are 7 subs at Kwajalein... Casualty ratio is now IJN's 84 to USN's 81.

IJN SS No. 20 attacks ML Baltimore at Johnston island (Torpedo hits 1, on fire)

2nd hit for USN SS R-5 northwest of Eniwetok: AK Ina Maru (Shell hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, on fire).
