ORIGINAL: Dirtdog20 Its the same thing I tell people about the school I work in. We have a 45% poverty rate for our student body and everyone says it is a bad school. I tell them far from it, you hear about our 5% who are knuckleheads. Let me tell you about my other 95% who are good kids for the most part. Same with professional sports today. For every (insert prima donna here) there are 40 guys who play with as much desire as they ever did back in the day. Its just that society is more tollerant of the Primadonna player because he makes for a good "sportscenter clip". The Kids see it and they think it is the way to be. That is my biggest day to day battle. I teach the 5% so-called knuckleheads (detention center), and many of them are good kids too, who come from incredibly heart-wrenching family circumstances. This does not excuse their actions, especially when people are hurt, but some of them respond quite well if you show some geniune compassion and caring coupled with a love for teaching and learning. Now, how am I supposed to prepare for class tomorrow if I'm checking the Matrix site every two minutes for the release of Maximum Football? I am presuming that you didnt mean to come across like I took it. The local paper is more than ready to run any story they can and attach our name to it as long as it a negative story. The local "golden school" had one player go to a small D1 last year. We had three go to bigger and better D1 programs. Guess which school got the big write up and which school wasnt mentioned. Guess which school had a student appointed to a service academy and couldnt get it into the paper. My "knuckleheads" are the kids I worry about every night, and every weekend. They are the ones I print out my notes for so that they have the study guide. They are the ones I think about when I look for new ways to involve them in lessons. You ever try to come up with a rap about the War of 1812?
