tacticon -> F4F-3 and F4F-4 Question (3/25/2006 1:54:36 AM)

I'm building a model of a wrecked Wildcat and I would like to know if the control surfaces were doped cotton (like the TBD) or metal. It's very hard to determine from the pix I can find on the net.

Was it wrecked due to the Zero bonus or was it one of the few ops losses?[:D]

Pilot was practicing Thach weave manuver during 1942 with an experience below 60. Guess it counts as an ops loss.

Entire F4F series was metal..

They were doped fabric.

*Sings* And the monkey wrapped his tail around the flag-pole, flashed his arse-hole to the crowd!

I don't know why that song came to mind, but when I was on the Tommy-T, I had an LPO that used to sing that when he recieved FUBAR info. :)

The model on display in Pensacola is all metal.
Honestly don't remember which model it is.
(Might be the GM unit.)

Just went back to the Navy museum website and they now have 14 different Wildcats.

Huh?

Truely sorry that my post offended you.

I was just trying to make a joke about how conflicting information can lead to unexpected results. I guess I didn't do so well with the joke and I appologize. It was not my intention to offend either of the posters who responded with the information.

As for my contribution to the forum...I know that I contribute little. I ask questions that are probably contained in the documentaion or the update info, but I only ask because I can't find what I am looking for.

Again, I appologize if my reply was on the wrong side of the foul-line.

Okay, back to my books. I'm pretty sure that the F4F-3 was fabric covered, at the least the preproduction model. I assumed the F4F was too. Let me chack.

Didn't find it in my books found it on the first website I looked at.

quote:

All control surfaces of the Wildcat were fabric-covered and were mechanically operated, with exception of the flaps, which were operated by a vacuum tank installed behind the cockpit. The rudder and elevator had small horn balances, the ailerons had inset hinges.

Thanks for your help everybody (esp Chez), I'll post a picture when it is done. It's being built for a modelers competition.
