thought it was 30 days??....this is from page 8 of our AAR...quoted by yourself

quote:

All I would add is that due to the free passage rules we declare the IO from North of Batavia to be a neutral zone. Allies can't send ships to India through here and Japan will not station subs/warships in the area and will stand down air coverage of the area.

If the Allies wish to attempt to retake India by sea I would ask for a 30 day notice prior to any ships enetering this area so the AC can be reactivated and repositioned.

Are the US troops going to come by sea or the teleport rule? Either is fine but I might ask for a cap on the number of teleporting units.

RUPD3658 -> RE: The empire crumbles (12/14/2006 3:22:58 PM)

Sorry. Memory is getting fuzzy. 30 days is correct.

RUPD3658 -> A view of the future (12/15/2006 1:51:20 AM)

No more low hanging fruit to be picked in my empire. MSWs trying to prep for a landing at Lunga get a taste for what future landings will be like. AA units should do the same to any bombers that come calling.

KDonovan -> Phase II Complete (12/18/2006 4:31:37 AM)

Phase II of Operation Animal is complete. The last and final phase (and the biggest) will commence shortly, once the major assetts are in place. Goals of Phase III?? The destruction of about 150,000-200,000 japanese troops and the destruction of the KB. I expect this part of the operation to be the bloodiest since the battle for Port Moresby a few months back.

5 air and 2 ASW attacks on the SS pargo result in only 1 hit. Worse yet, a MSW in a ASW TF was sunk by a sub. My ASW forces blow. [:@]

Just curious - this is a synching error or is it corrupt data? Is there anything that fixes this or is it permenent?

RUPD3658 -> 2nd Quarter 1943 report (12/19/2006 2:58:48 AM)

Overall the last three months have been a stalemate. Score wise I am holding my own and actually scored 35 more points than Kenny (1094 to 1059) this quarter although the VP ratio fell from 3.61 to 3.41. Since 01-01-1943 Kenny has outscored me by only 515 VP (3410 to 2895) and dropped the ratio from 4.26 to the current level.

Kenny has taken The Gilberts, New Georgia except for Rabaul, and will have of the Solomons except for Lunga in about a week.

For my part the highlights have been evacuations. The troops from PM marched over the Owen Stanley Mountains to Buna and were evacuated by air, sub, and barge to Gastma. They were forced out of there and now have made it to Rabaul where they will make their final stand. They have enoungh supplies to hold out well into 1944.

Troops that had been hastily sent to Lae were driven out but were evacuated by air and barge to the Marianas. Overall I have only lost 2 formations despite Kenny’s conquests.

I know that wars can’t be won by running away but cutting my losses is a big part of my plan.

Speaking of cutting my losses, my new defensive doctrine is not to fight inside the Allied air umbrella. As a result Kwajelain, Ponope, and Truk have been abandoned except for ground troops. The inner defense ring bases are now built up and should be a pain for Kenny to take. The bloodiest landing for Kenny so far was PM and it was held by only 250 AV worth of troops and 3000 mines. The inner ring bases will make this look like a cakewalk.

KB almost sortied several times but I chose not to risk it yet.

Chungking continues to be a mystery to me. The AV had fallen as low as 10,446 but new US units arrived and the AV went back as high as 12,520. During the same time spotted units has fallen from 125 to 120. I have received a ton of New CEF units and am rebuilding the morale of the old ones so an attack will come in the next few weeks.

The planned invasion of Russia was cancelled after I reviewed our house rules and figured out that the CEF could not participate. Kenny agreed that they could do so after Chungking falls, it if falls.

Only other real high point was one of my subs hitting the CV Essex with a torpedo. This has put it out of action for most of the last 2 months

KDonovan -> Sub Warfare Report - July 1943 (12/19/2006 6:10:55 AM)

Here's the results and comments of my submarine campaign against the japanese, that i started on Jan. 1943. Before i get into it, let me just state we are playing with Allied sub doctrine ON, so my subs attack less often, and attack at longer range, but also are less likely to suffer DC attacks. The Allied sub doctrine expires in mid 1943. Also the current dud rate is 20% and won't lower to 10% until Sept 1943. So basically, even though i started in Jan 1943, my campaign won't be in full gear until Sept.

I have about 110 subs available to me as of now. 40 of them are short leg subs that i mainly use for point defense and patrolling the waters near japanese perimeter bases. The other 70 are my fleet subs that are being used against japanese shipping deep inside japanese territory. Of the 70 fleet subs, i usually only can keep b/t 20-30 on patrol at a time, as the rest are either repairing system damage/DC damage, or are in transet from the war zone to reload/refuel. In the next 6 months, i'll be getting 25 more fleet subs, and should be able to established more advance bases. This will cut down on transet time, and i should be able to double the amount of subs currently on patrol.

To the results. As you can see i'm sinking 5 transports for every sub i lose. Not the best ratio, but not bad. The worst part of my results, IMO, is sinking only 4-5 transports per month. At this rate, i will only have sunk another 80 transports by the end of 1944. Luckly i have some things to look forward to. First is the dropping down of the dud rate from 20% to 10%. This will have the effect of claiming one extra transport per month, at the current rate. Second as stated, is the influx of new subs and bases, which should double the amount of transports sunk per month. Lastly, is the expiration of that Allied sub doctrine. With the doctrine implace, i was only getting about 1 sub attack every 4 days. I expect this to double, with its expiration. So in all, i expect my succeses to increase from the current 4-5 transports per month, to 16-18 transports per month in the coming month. This will net me 300 transports by the end of 1944....thats my prediction.

Bad day for me on the sub front. AK, TK, and MSW all sunk as well as 2 more AKs having to be scuttled. All this for not even a single hit on a US sub. [:(]

not so sure about that. IMO, I think having Allied Sub Doctrine ON had more of an impact. With Allied Sub Doctrine OFF i think going after the Manila Bay subs on turn 1 is a more attractive option. However, after playing as the allies for 1 1/2 years with Allied Sub Doctrine ON, i feel as if that was more of a hinderence on my sub performance, than the lost of 20 subs (w/ defective torps) on turn one.

If I had those subs now...i would only be able to field 4-5 more on patrol, probably neting me 5 more tranports sunk at this point.

Personally i think Singapore is the best option on turn 1 (with allied sub doctrine ON) as it garuntee's you 2 capital ships sunk from the outset, and probably a number of the DD's. IMO, the Brit DD's are important as they are each worth 300 PP's, that can better spent on releasing the NZ Bde's from New Zealand, or the Tazmania Bde.

RUPD3658 -> RE: Sub Warfare Report - July 1943 (12/21/2006 4:24:15 AM)

Possible problem: Kwantgung Garrison fell from 8100 to 6500 overnight. manaul cont showed 7570. None of these had any disabled units so it is not a supply issue. I am guessing that a diviion has been eaten by a bug. Russia did not activate and hopefully verything will be back to normal next turn.

Freaking Dutch sub left a VH2 mine at Marcus and sank one of my MLs. That hurts.

itchy01ca -> RE: Sub Warfare Report - July 1943 (12/22/2006 9:06:26 AM)

Well..
THAT was a long read.
But VERY interesting. Im also a young wargamer (25) and am watching these reports with interest.
There appears to be a few.. discrepancies (BUGS) in your game. 4E bombers were NOWHERE NEAR as effective in real life as they were in the game. B-17s were NOT to be feared by japs, especially not in the early part of the war. B-24/25s and PBYs are another story. In any case, 4E bombers (allied side) TOO STRONG.
Another gripe:
Chungking

Its cut off from supply. This city should have been dead a LONG time ago, even WITH the reinforcement it has been getting. Seems like a bug to me :P
I personally think the stats favour the allies when it comes to torpedo duds and sub hits. The jap subs were actually fairly powerful boats .. in the real war there just weren't enough of them. It seems the japs try to hit things but the game itself prevents it.. when in real life they would. Kinda errks me a bit to know of these problems because i really do want to get into PBEM with this game. Seems pretty intense, at least in the beginning. Theres still bugs to work out but im sure with enough time they'll be ironed out. Are you guys upgrading patches as you go along?
Anyways GREAT waste of a couple of hours reading and deciphering your maps and AARs. The little comments kept me bursting out in laughter.
To the Jap player: Kill all your commanders and start over with fresh forces :P THEY SUCK. You SHOULD be at least surviving but looking at a bunch of raids you made, your betty bombers didnt even have the gutts to brave the flak :P
The allied player.. you've got a tough time ahead of you if the jap gets his KB in the game.
What DOES KB stand for anyways??/
Good luck to both of you ;)

Glad to have a new reader.

There are several threads (or rants depending on how you view them) discussing both the over effectiveness of 4E bombers and the flawed ground combat system that allows Japan to run the board in China and India. We accept that they are just part of what makes WiTP a great GAME. Some people have a problem with this.

WE have had a lot of fun with this game so far. The great thing about PBEM vs the AI is that you have a human on the other end to mess with. [:D] As you can see we both have done unexpected things to turn the other's hair grey.[;)]

KB= Kutobutai (Something blossum in Japanese, I don't recall exactly) but basically means the whole Jap CV force commonly reffered to as "The Death Star". Mine is intact save the Akagi and the Junyo which were sunk last May in the Indian Ocean.
