That's an amazing painting, Przemcio...

Przemcio231 -> RE: Europe (4/20/2006 10:25:55 PM)

Yeach while we happily were killing each other the Russians grew stronger and stronger first they crushed Sweden in the "Northern War" and then Russians took part in the dividing of Poland as for Battle near Warsaw yep you won[:D] but you only achived 2 to 1 kill ratio when we chived something like 25 to 1 [:D] but that dose not matter any way you had luck that you escaped as you were surrunded there[:D] and your victory did not change nothing as Poles recaptured Warsaw and repled something that is called "Swedish Flood" in Poland...[:D][:D][:D]

Przemcio231 -> RE: Europe (4/20/2006 10:26:50 PM)

this Painting showing the charge was done by Kossak i think the famus painter[:)]

mlees -> RE: Europe (4/20/2006 10:29:49 PM)

I just had a depressing thought. So many battles. So many people hitting each other with bigger and bigger sticks. Sigh. Sucks to be Human. *sniff* Cant we all just get along?

Well, anyway, keep those paintings coming!

Przemcio231 -> RE: Europe (4/20/2006 10:56:25 PM)

By commie cartoon i meant that it was made during the Commie times in Poland... yes it was apolitical as it was for kinds[:D]

We still hit each other with sticks. High tech sticks, but we still thump our chests, too.

Nuclear annhilation is not the only way for society to collapse due to war. But that is a steakhouse discussion. I do not want to get this thread locked.

Eastern European history tends to get a little glossed over in the US public school system. (Not arrogance, just limited time and not everything can have the same time devoted to it.) With the attitudes I remarked on in post #128 of the "1.8 works Great!!!" thread, too many kids in the public school system just can't seem to care.

They are more focused on their social lives, I assume.

That is an affliction that's spreading, unfortunately. April 9 is the day where we mark the day the Germans occupied Denmark in 1940. Flags are flown at half staff until noon, and every year I can't help think about how many kids walk around thinking "wonder who died?" If they even notice...

... and today is Hitler's B-day, and some "kids" do celebrate it .. [:(]

Beautiful place....beautiful. The west coast is even more so [8D]

mlees -> RE: Europe (4/20/2006 11:28:28 PM)

How are the winters in Ireland? I grew up in New England. I get bitterly cold there. (Temps falling to zero degrees farenheit. That's what, -15 degress celcius?)

Ursa MAior -> RE: Europe (4/21/2006 12:42:12 AM)

It maybe a bit OT but has anyone wondered why the kids are taught less and less? I have a daughter of 6 yrs she is going to primary scholl this fall and it it really a headache which one to choose.

spence -> RE: Europe (4/21/2006 1:04:25 AM)

If it is like our schools your daughter will have a demonstration of a Native American dance but have no idea where this place called America is on the globe.

Even worse she'll learn to use a calculator to multiply numbers by one.

It is my sad duty to inform You, that You are partially wrong... Grunwald was indeed place of one of greatest medieval battles (probably 3rd most bloody). But it were Poles who defeated Teutonic Knights... Lithuanians were also there and took part in battle (along with Tatars & Czechs) but as their army consisted mostly of light cavalry they could not stand against heavy armored cavalry of Teutonic Order Guests.

By the way I'm Polish too...:)

KR
Radzy

Damn, I woke up Polish pride[:)]!... i know that, but it's my fault i admit - i would never again use partial info... I just want pointed how Žalgiris is named (hope i'm not wrong there)...

Anyway, I'm intersted about Polish-Lithuanian Kingdom (Union). From what i know this Union
were established as union where both states were formally equal, although in reality Poland was a dominant partner in the union, right?

Marten -> RE: Europe (4/21/2006 4:47:49 PM)

lithuanian grand prince wladyslaw jagiello was married with polish queen jadwiga and became the first king from jagiellonian dynasty.
union between our countries was "personal" so poland and lithuania had one king, each has it's own national institutions, organs, whatever...

i'm too old for that...

pauk -> RE: Europe (4/21/2006 5:18:57 PM)

hi i know facts... btw, Jadwiga was daughter of Luis I of Hungary (Angevin) and Elizabeth (Kotromanic, from Bosnia) his second wife. He died with no sons and one of this two daughters (Mary, born in second merriage with Elisabeth of Bosnia) should inherit Hungarian throne.

Poland lords did not want to continue the personal union with Hungary, and not to accept Mary's fiancé Sigismund as a regent. Instead of this they chose Mary's younger sister, Jadwiga, as their new monarch.

I was more interested in social relations between these two countries (learned facts in the past), but i see that you are too old for that......

Przemcio231 -> RE: Europe (4/21/2006 8:02:57 PM)

No No Poland and Luithania were equal in the Union... both had their own Courts , Trsures , taxes and such the only thing that was the same was the Ruler who was named King in Poland and Grand Duke in Luithania[:)]

As for Personal Union with Hungary it existed for some short time somwhere between 1440 and 1444 when we shared the King Wladyslaw nicknamed "Warnenczyk" after his death in the battle of Warna[:)]

Monter_Trismegistos -> RE: Europe (4/21/2006 8:06:47 PM)

Of course he recieved its nickname afer death. During his life nobody knew that he will be beheaded at Warna.

Ursa MAior -> RE: Europe (4/21/2006 10:03:33 PM)

And his nick name was Dobze Loius in Hungary because that was his saying. 'Very well", he said to almost to anything. Well he was one of our worst kings if you apolgize there is anothe personal union with Poland which I remmeber more willingly. Stefan Batory.

Przemcio231 -> RE: Europe (4/22/2006 11:39:44 AM)

Well mate what do you expect from some teenager who took the crown becous he wanted and adventure[:)] any way Wladyslaw was convinced by the dumb Pope to break a good peace treaty with the Turks... any way here is the part of a painting[;)]

Great idea Pauk. It's always interesting to know just how big the WitP community is. Could we throw this open to other continents as well? Also, what about Leichenstein?

greetings...

We can open new thread for other continents but as far as i know, there is no one from Latin America and Africa. As i stated before there are few grogs from Asia and I think there are (were) two guys from Oceania - sorry i can't recall their nicknames...

Not sure what to do with Australia - perhaps it should be considered as a part of UK (they recognise British queen as supreme leader)[:D]

(taking cover[:D])

Well, i found two guys from Latin America.... we now miss only Africa!

PzB74 -> RE: Europe (2/28/2007 2:11:53 AM)

An Iraqi manages to get a visa to work in Scotland, after work one day he
decides to phone his family and see how they are getting on.
His mum answers and he asks how's the family?
"Terrible" she sob's, "Your fathers been shot, your sisters been raped and I
was just held up at knife point and all my money stolen.......I really don't
know why you moved us to Glasgow. [:D]

You'd think that after ruling half the world in the 19th century you English would have a better sense of geography [8|]

Oh?
Speaking as an Englishman abroad (I live in Scotland) I think it only fair to point out that the world we ruled was split into
(A) British people, and (B) People who made jolly good servants with a bit of training once the smoke had dissipated from the final siege.

... as for what the people from group (B) called the place they lived in we weren't overly concerned - we'd just conquered it, and while we were busy plundering it we generally renamed it after some upstanding member of the hierarchy.

We're also still convinced the place was better off when we ruled it, as proof we'll offer the incomprehensible names chosen after independence instead of the simple 'SmytheLand' we'd used while in charge.
Harumph...
Yours Sincerely,
J Arthur Blodgett-Crumpingham
Brigadier, retd
