1957 World Series - Game 4 (Pirates lead series 3 games to 0) Frank Lary (10-10, 4.21) vs. Ike DeLock (3-3, 7.65) Pirates are looking for a clean sweep!!! Game Summary: 1ST INNING - With Goodman on 3rd, Kaline hits a grounder to give the Red Sox the early one run lead. (0-1) 2ND INNING - Skinner and Groat both walk to open the Pirates 2nd. Thomas singles and the bases are loaded for the pitcher. Wouldn't you know it... Lary smacks a single to right field and two runs score!!! (2-1) That brings up Frank Robinson who hits a double to score another run! (3-1) Musial walks and the bases are loaded with nobody out! Mathews strikes out, and so does Burgess. Up strides game 3 hero, Mazeroski. Maz hits the ball to left but doesn't get enough of it.. 3rd out. 2ND INNING - Malzone singles, and the pitcher bunts him to 2nd. Goodman then singles to center, scoring Malzone. (3-2) Virdon singles, putting runners at the corners with one out. Virdon attempts to steal second and is thrown out!! With two out, Musial grounds out. 3RD INNING - Just like the second inning, Skinner and Groat both draw walks. Thomas grounds out and the Pirates have runners at the corners with one out. Lary strikes out and Robinson grounds out to end the threat. 4TH INNING - Hurd comes in to pitch for the Sox, but both Musial and Mathews hit singles to put runners at the corners with no outs. Burgess hits one to second, and the Red Sox trade a run for the double play. (4-2) Maz ends the inning with a pop out. 6TH INNING - Kiely comes in to pitch for Hurd with one out in the Pirate 6th. He walks Robinson, but no harm is done. 6TH INNING - Robinson makes an error, and Klaus reaches first to start the inning. Hal Smith singled to the left side, and that will do it for Lary. Littlefield comes on in relief and Malzone CRUSHES the ball to deep left center, giving the Red Sox the lead, (4-5). Littlefield gives up a couple more hits and then Ted Williams steps to the plate. BOOM!!!! Another 3 run homer for the Red Sox, and they are now up by 4!!! (4-8) Littlefield is yanked for Jim Bunning who gets the next two outs. 7TH INNING - Jack McMahan comes in to pitch for the Sox. With one out, Maz and Skinner single. Dick Groat singles and the bases are loaded!!! Frank Thomas grounds into a DP and the inning is over... crud on a cracker... 8TH INNING - Not paying close enough attention, the Pirates manager leaves Jim Bunning in the game to hit for himself. The 0-2 pitch is hit DEEP AND FAR.... THAT BALL IS OUTTA HERE!! A solo shot for Jim Bunning pulls the Pirates to within 3!! (5-8) Brodowski comes in to pitch as McMahan is boo'ed off the field... Frank Robinson is up and BOOM!!! OH MY!!! BACK TO BACK HOMERS FOR THE PIRATES!!! They now only trail by 2!!!! (6-8) Musial grounds out, but Mathews walks, bringing the tying run to the plate! Burgess flies out for the second out. Up strides Maz, can he be the hero again??? Nope, he strikes out... double crud... 8TH INNING - With only one out and two men on base, Bunning is pulled for Bob Friend. Friend gets Kaline to line out and Zauchin to ground out. 9TH INNING - The Pirates last chance at a sweep. They need two runs... Paul LaPalme comes in to close out the game for the Red Sox. Bob Skinner opens the frame with a single, and the drama in this game continues!!! Groat is due up, but the Pirates send up Roberto Clemente as a pinch hitter. Clemente grounds into a double play and the Pirates are down to their last out with Thomas up. The 0-0 pitch is hit into right for a single and Dale Long comes in to pinch hit for the pitcher. Long is struck out and the Red Sox avoid the sweep!!! Player of the Game: Ted Williams' HR proved to be the difference in the game.
