NYM86 -> Low scoring 1870's? (5/11/2006 10:29:52 PM)

I just started my second fictional season(1872), and the scores are very low, just like the previous season. 80% of the games are 1 - 0. Is this just a rerpresentation of history? Or I am a doing something wrong? Thank you for your response.

The real 1872 season saw a lot of scoring -
National Association, 1872 - so that makes me think you have something else going on.

How many teams do you have?
How many players-per-team?
How did you populate your association?
And what does the free agent pool look like?

1) There are 14 teams.
2) 50 players per team (minors + majors)
3) A normal fictional inintial draft.
4) It looks like a normal pool to me.

*Also there are not many home runs hit, but there are a lot of triples.

This is very strange, perhaps I should start a new association.

Well, the real 1871 only had 9 teams, and the real 1872 only had 11, and several of those were pretty abysmal - so you may be spreading the 'real' hitters too thin, which is letting pitching dominate. (A '10-point scrub' hitter against a real pitcher will get a very pathetic batting average).

I suggest 1901 - 16 teams - as a good place to create an initial draft, whether fictional or not. You'll get about 20 real players per team (in 1901), but by 1904 the association should consist entirely of real players. You get the opposite effect in 1901, because the teams don't have enough real pitching - when a '10-point scrub' pitcher faces a real hitter, they get shelled, but the AI doesn't know that, and makes pitching changes as though they had a real bullpen.

Alternately, if you just 'accept' your 1872 results for what they are, your association should fill up and balance itself within four or five years.

...

Ideal, for this era, is to start about three to five years before you really want to start, and use "Unattended Auto-Play" to bulk up your association with players.

hmmm, That makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to answer this Amaroq, it is much appreciated.

you're welcome!

Its been a favored era, for me, for a number of years, but I haven't quite gotten a game to simulate it quite right - PureSim still has the 'closer', even though the role won't be invented until the '40's and '50's.

I really want to be able to more closely sim this era as well, hopefully shawn will consider makeing the changes necessary in updates in the near future.

Amaroq, what does your face folder for the 1800s contain? mine is up to 275 faces. do you have trouble with this folder auto loading to players in the game. I never seem to get players faces to attach in game from my 1800s folder, the others work fine.

any toughts?

Amaroq -> RE: Low scoring 1870's? (5/12/2006 8:58:29 AM)

Hmm, I haven't been using faces for the 1800's, honestly!

osdavis -> RE: Low scoring 1870's? (5/14/2006 2:59:21 PM)

Sorry, i don't mean to butt in here, but...

Redeck, you have TWO HUNDRED SEVENTY FIVE faces from the 19th century? How can i get these? Any help would be appreciated...

redeck -> RE: Low scoring 1870's? (5/20/2006 6:39:25 PM)

sorry davis, yea i got 275 faces for the pre 1900 folder, i pick them up all the time from websites posting picks of OLD time baseballcards. the kind that came with tobacco. i have them fitted to the game and most are pretty nice. i have the problem though of puresim not assigning these faces to players out of this folder. i usually have to assign them manually.

some day i will post them somewhere or email the file to someone who knows how and where to post them, right now im starting a new job in a new city and dont have the time to do either (unless someone wants to do it i will email them the face file)
