Onime No Kyo -> RE: Update (8/18/2006 3:44:56 PM)

Why no update so long guys? I'm anxious to find out how he'll use the Holy Bible to make a busted P-40 flyable.

The mail service is pretty shaky right now out of Manila.
Plus, I was in Las Vegas for a few days.

BTW...the show "La Reve" at the new Wynn is fantastic, although I spied only one pair of naked breasts and I'm not even sure that wasn't a "wardrobe malfunction". Maybe I should have tried to find a Gaugin exhibition in town.

Cap Mandrake -> Destination Koepang? (8/20/2006 5:10:53 AM)

The reconstituted Force Z has been hiding in Derby along with a a RNN Light cruiser and DD force waiting for a Jap move toward Timor or Kendari. Ryujo and Zuiho with 2 x CVE have been limiting their scope of action by loitering in the Banda Sea. On the 28th of Dec...the CVL's and CVE's sortie into the Indian Ocean looking for fat targets.
They catch 2 severely damaged RN DD's which have been trapped in the now-threatened Balikpapan (from the Battle of the Makassar Straight) trying to escape to Soerabaja.

Bad news for two hulks. Good news for the POW. A RNN light force under Doorman tags along. This is also an opportunity to get reinforcements and supplies to Koepang.

Now THATS a map! [&o][&o][&o][&o]

Teach me, oh great master, how do you do it? I tried and it was very embarassing.

Terminus -> RE: Destination Koepang? (8/20/2006 3:30:53 PM)

Just a few text-boxes and arrows on top of what looks suspiciously like an MS Encarta map...

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Destination Koepang? (8/20/2006 4:25:59 PM)

Very hard to find good maps online. [:(]

It is MSEncarta [sm=00000506.gif] As I recall, it is 3 pasted together. MSEncarta has a hilarious bug, at least for maps of the East Indies and Malaya and New Guinea.

I downloaded a map of Sumatra and Malyasia and there was text over some Islands saying "Greater Sunda Islands". Cool, I thought..never heard of those. Later, I was looking at a map of the Banda Sea and again, the "Greater Sunda Islands" were listed there. Hmmmm? Where have I heard that before? Then I was looking at a map of the Deboyne Island/Milne Bay area and again, they also had some "Greater Sunda Islands" there too. [:)] That Sunda chap really got around.

It is so pervasive, I think it may be an inside joke by a MS employee who was ticked off about his stock options not going up enough. Encarta also has a bad habbit of sticking the "Pacific Ocean" or "Indian Ocean" in some little inlet in the PI or Java.

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Destination Koepang? (8/20/2006 6:34:25 PM)

What about more close in maps Mandrake, like, say, False Bay in Macassar. Can you point me to where I can find decent ones of those?

Cap Mandrake -> Those are some GREAT Islands (8/20/2006 6:39:32 PM)

Here they are off Sumatra

Cap Mandrake -> RE: Those are some GREAT Islands (8/20/2006 6:41:40 PM)

Not wanting to be outdone, the South China Sea and Sulu Sea Chanber of Commerce Associations also got their honorary Sunda Islands.

Seems like all the islands between Manila and Singapore are somehow affiliated with the Sunda group in one way or another. [;)]

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Those are some GREAT Islands (8/20/2006 7:00:29 PM)

It does look like a graphics bug. "Sunda Islands" just stays in the middle of the screen when you scroll.

Onime No Kyo -> RE: Those are some GREAT Islands (8/20/2006 7:02:50 PM)

Wow. Encarta gets pretty close but not really close enough for a tactical map.

VSWG -> RE: Those are some GREAT Islands (8/20/2006 7:06:32 PM)

Greater Sunda Islands = Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Sulawesi
Lesser Sunda Islands = Bali, Flores, Timor, Tenimbar Islands, Moluccas,... basically everything between Borneo, Guinea and Australia.

MS Encarta is correct! [:)]

If scrolling down with MSN Encarta isn't good enough..you might get lucky with the U of Texas online collection.

http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/

You can also try Google Earth and set the camera to look straight down..or do an orthographic view.

Even Mapquest can be of help...but the resolution isnt there for Makassar

Thank you Mandrake, that UT site looks very promising.

Cap Mandrake -> Silhouettomegaly (8/22/2006 11:00:33 PM)

Bah..due to overexuberant seaplane spotting reports, POW and Repulse retreat from what might have been a really nice fight with Fuso and Yamashiro. Koepang is spared for now, as the macerated Jap landing force diverts to Dili to put troops ashore before they become shark bait. Certainly, it was not the Japanese intent to land a full brigade plus several support units at Dili. Despite a missed opportunity for POW and Repulse to fulfill their destinies, this little altercation North of Timor has to go into the win column for the Allies, one of the few in that column. 95% of the "Gull Force" is ashore at Kopeang, although the supply situation limits air deployment. The Jap CVL's disappeared somewhere in the Indian Ocean and may be headed to Timor. Lautem is probably going to get it soon. Perhaps Java can get up there in time after getting a drink.

Cap Mandrake -> M&M Enterprises (8/22/2006 11:50:52 PM)

From Milo's Mind Your Own Business, p. 23

"Your successful entrepenuer should be able to put on his client hat and perceive a market need quickly, then move forward with a solution in a time-sensitive manner, or you will be left with bunch of crap you will not be able to move."

Cap Mandrake -> Revenge for the Revenge? (8/23/2006 6:31:40 PM)

The diversion attack on Bangkok very nearly succeeds, reducing fortifications to 0 after the garrison is found to be a support unit.
Unfortunately, the 33rd Div arrives on the second day and, of course, the 18th Indian hits a wall of steel. The whole idea was to drag up a division from Malaysia, instead the 33rd, which was apparently near Tavoy is diverted. Good news for the Moulemin defenders...but the 33rd is now pursuing the 18th Indian up the rail line to Rhaeng, threatenting an envelopment of the Moulemin defences.

Here are the options:

1) Move 3 or 4 brigades from Rangoon and Moulmein and form a line on the Salween R, NW of Raheng (or at Raheng itself)

2) Counterattack with all 4 brigades at Moulemin, possibly driving off the two tank regiments there..thereby threatening Tavoy. Of course, if this fails, there wont be much left to stop the 33rd

3) Turtle defence at Rangoon with a later seaborne evac...uggh

4) Hope the 59 mile problem strikes the 33rd or try to fatigue it with air attacks
