BurntFingers -> Windowless Mode? Also what is best hardware for ANW? (9/5/2006 7:53:13 PM)

2 Questions in 1 Thread

1) I notice that Harpoon 3 ANW just seems to run from a DOS prompt? Does it actually need a Windows OS up and running in order to work?

2) What are optimal requirements for running a server? I appreacite good speed and maths calculation, but what about memory?

Thing is, if ANW actually likes older DOS startup, then that affects the 2nd question.

I have been without Harpoon for a number of years, but I just had to get ANW.

(1) yes it is a windows app now, fully. No more DOS commands......My understanding is that it will NOT run under DOS, but requires windows, be it 95, 98, or XP.
(2) Well the game will basically take everything you can give it, but for a server, I would look at the official requirements. The Bandwidth is the key, a modem is just on the edge whist a high speed be it Cable or DSL should offer more than enough.

As for getting it, you will not be disappointed, especially with MP.......Plus Nukes also.

Windows 98/2000/XP
800 MHz CPU (1 GHz+ Recommended) * For a server this might be lowered a bit not sure*
512 MB RAM (1 GB Recommended) * Here 256 might work but not sure *
32 MB Video Card (64 MB Preferred)
16 bit Sound Card (DirectX 8+ Compatible)
80 MB free, uncompressed Hard Drive space
Windows compatible Mouse
DirectX 9+

Indeed H3 will not run under DOS, it requires DirectX for one ;)

What I've found for server follows JRyan well, 1GB of RAM is great but 512MB will be plenty as well as long as you aren't running too much other garbage in the background. As for bandwidth usage, I was seeing about 125kb/s for each connected player under most circumstances. We did small 4 player scenarios on a 1.8GHz processor with no trouble at all.

Well, I've already got it already - just it is horribly unresponsive on the bigger scenarios (Linchpin - Red).

I've sort of worked out around it by running it from a very slimline Win2K, and pausing it to issue commands to units... it's not ideal, but it works. Linchpin - Red starts with a massive Soviet missile barrage, so at the beginning it's important to get the NATO assets up very quickly. And that's next to impossible with the program engine spending most of it's time calculating the track of about 160 missiles.

Thanks for your responses. I'm so glad I didn't just go ahead and try before asking... that's about 2 days working time saved from my pont of view.

I think I'll give the server idea a miss until I've got some decent calculating hardware - Athlon Bartons are pretty good at shifting data around but FPU calculation isn't their strong point.

This is pretty much how I have to play all my scens either in SP or MP. I hit pause before issuing orders. This drives some of my opponents nuts(!), but it is the only thing I can do. Otherwise, I often create crashes. [:(]

This was the same procedure for playing monster-sized scenarios in either ANW or H3.

Welcome aboard, shipmate! [8D]
