Summary of Operations 8/31/42 HQ Asiatic Fleet now disembarked in Los Angeles after transport by sea from Australia via Wellington & Panama City. Current strength of Asiatic Fleet HQ is 69 support squads (out of TOE of 360). Asiatic Fleet HQ will draw replacements as support squads become available (this unit on low priority for replacement support elements behind front-line combat and base units) to rebuild to full TOE strength. Central Pacific: Jap carrier aircraft patrol contacts by U.S. subs at Canton Is - no contacts at Kwajalein or Pago Pago. Mine sweeping ops by U.S. forces at Fanning Is, Jap mine sweeping ops continue at Kwajalein. Several reports from PBY and B-17 naval patrol aircraft indicate KB task forces have reversed course and now moving eastward. Situation map follows. More Operations from 8/31/42: South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Norfolk Is. No further contact with Jap surface TF at Norfolk Is reported on 8/30. Allied surface TF is still heading for Norfolk Is - estimated time of arrival at Norfolk Is is 2 game turns. Australia: Jap recon flight over Daly Waters, also air bombing (ground attack) against 4 Australian Div. Light casualties reported. F-5A recon aircraft flew again over Darwin - no change in Jap forces there. India/Burma: Jap recon flights reported over Imphal and Port Blair (Andaman Is). Two Jap fighter sweeps were launched against base at Imphal - RAF fighter squadrons were grounded for a quick repair of aircraft and rest, no aircraft losses or damage on either side. China: Quiet other than scattered Jap air bombing attacks on Chinese front-line ground units.

Summary of Operations 9/1/42 Central Pacific: KB returns to launch another air attack against U.S. base at Palmyra. An attempted "1000 bomber raid" from Palmyra by all available 4E bombers in the Central Pacific theater fails to hit Jap carriers - however, a large number of Japanese carrier fighters were damaged while intercepting the raid. U.S. carrier TF's (four CV's) have turned back on a SW heading towards Johnston Is. U.S. carriers are heavily outnumbered by KB forces near Palmyra - U.S. CV's are moving into position to attack only if a favorable opportunity for a successful strike does occur. Possibility for a U.S. carrier counterattack might be favorable if (1) KB carriers exhaust their available ops, and/or (2) damage to a large number of Jap aircraft on the KB's carriers continues to occur at the present rate. Summary of Operations 9/2/42 part deux South Pacific: Allied surface TF (BB Prince of Wales, 1 CA, 3 CL's) reached Norfolk Is - no contact made with Japanese forces previously detected in this area. TF is now proceeding to Sydney. Jap recon flight (H8K Emily) over Norfolk Is. Australia: Japanese air raids on 4 Australian Div and airfield facilities at Daly Waters - light damage, moderate casualties reported. Jap air recon flight detected over Tennant Creek. F-5A recon flight over Darwin reports no change in status of Japanese forces. However, sigint report on 9/1 indicated Jap 44 Road Construction Bn previously at Darwin is now at Tjlitjap. India/Burma: Japanese shore bombardment TF hits Calcutta. AAR follows. Several squadrons of land-based naval strike aircraft (Swordfish, Beauforts) are being transferred from Ceylon to bases surrounding Calcutta. Unfortunately the Royal Navy currently has only two BB's available (Valiant, Revenge) with British Withdrawal for 9/42 requiring one of these BB to go - no match for the IJN. I am moving non-essential air and ground units from Calcutta to adjacent bases - from where they can be recalled into Calcutta as the situation dictates. Summary of Operations 9/4/42 Central Pacific: Jap carrier aircraft patrol contacts by U.S. subs at Pago Pago and Canton Is - no contacts at Kwajalein. Japanese mine sweeping ops detected at Kwajalein after a minelaying flotilla of U.S. subs reached Kwajalein and laid mines there on 9/3. Another Jap surface naval bombardment at Palmyra - AAR and situation map follow. Light to moderate damage and casualties. Airfield at Palmyra inoperative due to bombardment damage, nearly all aircraft in Palmyra damaged in the bombardments. A little perspective at this point in the war... Pillager has appeared to stop the tide of Japanese conquest at what will be a very difficult outer perimeter for the Allies to crack. The recent Japanese attacks on Palmyra and Calcutta by Pillager may be the start of a new phase in this campaign - conceding that an Allied buildup is underway and cannot be stopped in the long run, however, launching strikes against key forward Allied positions to delay and disrupt a buildup is quite feasible. A possible byproduct of strikes against forward Allied bases is that I could be drawn into committing my own forces (particularly carriers) into a defensive action where Japanese forces would have local superiority and/or be at a tactical advantage. This was quite apparent in the Palymra action where the bulk of the IJN was committed, the KB in a compact formation with 7-8 carriers being no match for the four CV's I had in the area. Not to mention all but four Jap BB's (these four BB's being used against Calcutta) involved in the Palmyra action as well. From the Allied perspective, victory point totals in this campaign are relatively meaningless. As shown in the intel report above, a Japanese auto-victory in Jan '43 is inevitable (which is something I pretty much conceded about two months ago). Victory points aside, this campaign is quite winnable for the Allies over the long term especially with the bulk of starting Allied forces relatively intact. A substantial Allied problem in this campaign is how to crack the outer perimeter. Needless to say, this endeavor will take substantial Allied losses to accomplish. My victory conditions for that stage of the campaign will not be measured so much in terms of capturing bases on the Japanese outer perimeter as inflicting substantial losses on Japanese forces, particularly the KB. A 1:1 swap of CV's lost in actions along the Japanese outer perimeter would be a successful outcome. My first priority in winning an Allied offensive is attrition. If it's Japanese and it floats, sink it, anything that's encountered from a rubber raft to the Yamato. If it flies, it crashes and burns. LCU's - permanently erased. Capturing Japanese bases only to the degree where it supports a war of attrition. After the Jap forces are pounded, then we can deal with real estate. Victory points being is a distant third in my calculations. Timing? The phony war continues into '43 if I have my way about it. Several factors going into my calculations. (1) This applies mainly to U.S. carriers, but can be applied to other U.S. and Allied forces as well. When I attack, I plan to lose carriers. And in the process of losing those carriers, take the core of the KB down with them. 1:1 swap is a win for me. What is important in my calculations is that any U.S. carriers lost be quickly replaced. Timing of an U.S. counteroffensive in early 1943 would allow any lost U.S. carriers to be quickly replaced with a stream of Essex CV's and Independence CVL's entering the game as reinforcements. Not only that, lost U.S. carriers will become a part of the reinforcement stream. With the KB hopefully destroyed or badly diminished, the "second string" of new Essex and Independence class carriers will gain superiority over any remaining Japanese opposition and continue the attack. (2) Torpedo dud rate reduction. U.S. submarines become a factor. Not to mention the TBF squadrons on U.S. carriers becoming a useful weapon in naval attack strikes. (3) Getting as many ships as possible through the 10/42 upgrades. Particular emphasis on U.S. submarine upgrades and increased flak on U.S. carriers and escorting surface ships. Putting more flak aboard U.S. ships may be small change, but small change could end up being the difference. Radar doesn't hurt either. I want the best possible "first string" going in vs the KB. maybe other things as well... Where to strike? No decision on that yet. I'm making no assumptions, excluding no possibilities. With all the territory Pillager took, there's gotta be a soft underbelly somewhere. My job is to find it. It's been a year since Pillager and I started this PBEM. As the Allied player, it's so tempting to get impatient and want to make something happen in the early going which in most cases would have been a mistake. I had to "bite my tongue" a lot and let the Japs have their fun. Pay back is coming.

A minesweep TF was dispatched from Christmas Is to Palmyra to complete sweeping mines. Damage from Japanese naval bombardment at the Palmyra base now fully repaired. Summary of Operations 9/13/42 Editor's note - Definition of "Japanese carrier aircraft" in these discussions indicate references to planes of Japanese aircraft types (i.e. Vals, Kates, Zeroes, etc) that are capable of operating from carriers. It is realized here while the majority of these aircraft are actually operating from a carrier, the possiblity of "carrier aircraft" being land-based is not excluded (given that the Japanese do have a few land-based air units equipped with these aircraft). Summary of Operations 9/14/42 Central Pacific: U.S. subs report contacts with Japanese carrier aircraft patrols at Kwajalein, Pago Pago, and Canton Is. I established a forward submarine base at Christmas Is (port size 4 with two AS now at anchor, 36K supply & 48K fuel on hand). Utilization of the sub base at Christmas Is is planned to handle mainly undamaged subs on patrol missions (refueling and rearming) to extend patrol range and endurance. Some shorter range subs (S-class, etc) will likely use Christmas Is as their home base. Christmas Is could also be used as a emergency base for damaged subs - reduce flotation or fire damage before moving on to Pearl or the U.S. West Coast for more extensive repair. Longer range patrol subs, subs on minelaying missions, and light system damage repair will continue to use Pearl Harbor. U.S. West Coast bases will still handle repair of subs with heavier system damage (level 15-20 and greater) and most submarine upgrades. Comments or suggestions from readers on this are welcome. Also... would only one AS at Christmas Is be sufficient? If so, I'd rather send the extra AS out of there. wneumann, In view of your stated use of Christmas Is, I would only base 1 AS there and use the other to establish another forward sub base (remember with an AS present the port can be smaller than size 4). For resupply purposes, 1 AS only suffices. If you intend to undertake a reasonable amount of repair work, then multiple (up to a max of 4) AS convey benefits. Alfred

Thanks Alfred, I thought only one AS would be sufficient there - inadvertantly sent two of them to Christmas Is. I don't intend doing any significant repair activity at Christmas Is, only refuelling and rearming of subs on patrol. Any other activity beyond that (including repairs, arming subs for minelaying missions, etc) will be done either at Pearl or U.S. West coast bases. I had the impression that the second AR at Christmas Is would not be of any benefit.
