Summary of Operations 4/21/43 Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 26 days. Central Pacific: Moderate to light Jap air patrols (both G4M Betty & E13A1 Jake) reported near Kwajalein, one B5N2 Kate spotted on patrol at Pago Pago, quiet in the Canton Is area. No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships in any of these locations. Unidentified Jap submarine detected north of Pearl Harbor - several ASW TF's formed and dispatached from Pearl to intercept and attack this contact. Light Ki-49 Helen air patrols reported by U.S. subs operating off Japanese home islands, also several contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships. This will evenly divide the four USAAF P-40 fighter squadrons now in Australia between P-40E's and N's, allowing front-line squadrons to draw replacement planes from both pools. Additional USAAF fighter squadrons are now enroute to Australia - nearly all of these equipped with P-38's. DEI: Only one Allied sub currently operating in this area. No contacts reported between U.S. subs and Jap surface ships. U.S. subs off the Japanese home islands also reporting no detected activity. Unidentified sub again detected north of Pearl Harbor. U.S. ASW TF's are heading towards this contact. South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland, otherwise quiet. An unidentified Jap submarine detected at Rarotonga, for now it can stay there. Plans to land Allied LCU's on Rarotonga and begin base construction there have been suspended. The way the longer range plans I'm considering are beginning to develop, the quieter the South Pacific theater is the better. Summary of Operations 4/26/43 - the Florida Monsoon season edition. Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 21 days. U.S. carrier TF's now on the U.S. west coast to refit ships (minor system damage) and also for 4/43 upgrades. This upgrade is not as major a one for the carrier forces as 10/42 - though the 4/43 upgrade includes CV Wasp, significant AA increases on escort BB's and some cruisers, some DD's receive improved ASW capability. A small number of carrier dive bomber squadrons upgrading during this refit from SBD-3's to SBD-5's. More DB squadrons will upgrade to SBD-5's as sufficient numbers of replacement pool planes become available. F6F Hellcats do not become available until 7/43, so carrier fighter squadrons continue operating F4F Wildcats. Completion of ship refits and 4/43 ship upgrades for U.S. carrier TF's expected to roughly coincide with arrival of CV Essex. Carrier forces will be reorganized to add CV Essex and four Independence CVL's - this will bring strength of the U.S. carrier force to 7 CV's, 4 CVL's. In addition to U.S. forces, a British air combat TF (one Illustrious CV, BB Prince of Wales and escorts) is now refitting its ships in the U.S. At last... the KB has something to reckon with. Several transport TF's arrived at Penhryn from the U.S. west coast and now unloading 43rd Division along with approx 20K supply - additional transport TF's from the U.S. are due to arrive at Penhryn with more LCU's and supply. My estimate on the situation at Penhryn anticipates at least a Japanese bombardment or surface combat TF being sent to Penhryn in a matter of days, also cannot exclude the possibility of a visit to Penhryn from the KB. U.S. carrier forces are expected to remain unavailable for an estimated 30 days as they complete 4/43 ship upgrades, refit and re-organization. I am not planning to send heavy US surface naval forces to this area with the possiblity of the KB being sent southwards as most US bases in this area of the South Pacific theater do not have sufficient aircraft to adequately cover either transports or surface naval TF's against Jap carrier planes. Therefore, US countermeasures will mostly be of the "duck and run" variety - getting as many transports out of the area as quickly as possible at the first sign of approaching Jap naval forces (assuming there are any signs). Transports from the U.S. approaching or passing through the Penhryn area are now being delayed or rerouted until Jap naval forces have struck and departed, or it is confirmed that Jap naval forces are not coming. Otherwise it's quiet. Australia: Jap recon flight over Tennant Creek. No reported ground or air combat. Most air reinforcements to Australia from the U.S. have by now arrived and disembarked in Sydney - these air units now repairing their planes back to operational status. Several transports from the U.S. with more air units are still enroute and expected to arrive in Australia shortly. Allied recon flights over Port Moresby, Darwin, and Exmouth all report no detected activity or change in Jap forces. India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Dacca, Calcutta, Asansol. Central Pacific: US subs reporting light Jap air patrols near Kwajalein (G4M Betty, D4Y Judy, E13A1 Jake), the Canton Is area (G4M), at Pago Pago (G3M Nell, F1M2 Pete) and off the Japanese home islands (G5N Liz, E13A1) . No contacts with Japanese surface ships in any of these locations. Five unidentified Japanese sub contacts detected north of Pearl Harbor, reports show all 5 Jap subs moving on a W or SW heading as if returning home from patrol. But where were they patrolling? Up to now, none of these subs had contacts with US ships, TF's or planes, no minefields have been detected. No matter... shortly there will be 10 or more ASW ships chasing each Jap sub, and swarms of planes as well. Situation map follows. A task force with USN 58th Seabees and 8-9K supply arrived at Aitutaki Is (north of Rarotonga). Landing operations are now underway with base construction to start as quickly as possible. Aitutaki Island is a beach hex but a very suitable location for construction of medium size base facilities. Sigint report for 5/12 indicates Jap Hankow SNLF was transferred from China and now located on Tinian. Hankow SNLF was previously located at Ichang as of 8/17/42. Feinder... Didn't realize you live just up the road from me. I'm Carrollwood area. Pillager's subs off Hawaii were a surprise to me. There's no lack of US naval search planes flying about, it's amazing they didn't run into any of my transports or other ships, if they laid a minefield somewhere I would have found it by now. So what are or were these subs doing? There has to be some logic behind this, but what?

Margaritaville - I figured you live in Key West. Yeah, Land o' Lakes is nice (move here from Town-n-Country in 2002). Wife and I said we were going to drive north until we saw cows again, and buy a house (ended up being Land o Lakes). Unfortunately, there aren't any more cows here anymore; and other than the expense of gas (I work across from International Mall), it's a nice area. There are actually a few of us in Tampa area, I think about 6 from the boards. One of these days, we'll have to meet for beer to watch a Bucs game or something. -F-
