China: Jap recon flights over Chungking and Tuyun.

Allied air situation in China remains difficult with supply situation and a shortage of SB2c and Il-4c replacement bomber planes. All Chinese bomber squadrons except one have been withdrawn from front line service and transferred by air to rear-area bases in India. 30 CAF Squadron loaded its nine pilots (average experience 91) aboard its only remaining SB-2c bomber and flew off to Delhi - other Chinese SB-2c squadrons not having more than 2 or 3 planes left with a full or almost-full complement of highly experienced pilots. Chinese SB-2c squadrons all upgrade to B-25J Mitchells (available 12/43).

Nearly all Chinese fighter squadrons now converted to P-40N's - most of these squadrons now located in Kweiyang as air ops from Chungking base is almost impossible at this time.

Chinese replacement pilot pool is also nearly depleted.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 8/30/43 (1/24/2009 3:34:35 PM)

Summary of Operations 8/30/43

Central Pacific: Very light Jap air patrol activity continues to be reported by U.S. subs near Kwajalein, quiet in Canton Is area. Jap air patrols continue to be active at Pago Pago.

SS Pogy at Truk reports increased Jap air patrol activity. Plane types include Ki-48 Lily, D4Y Judy (CV-based ?), F1M2 Pete floatplanes (at least one Nagato-class BB or a CS in Truk, probably at anchor). There's been no available information on numbers on Japanese ships detected at anchor in Truk base - however, this doesn't eliminate the possibility of Truk being a primary IJN base for the KB and/or surface naval forces operating in either the Central or South Pacific theatres (Truk being located within reach of both theatres). SS Pogy has been patrolling Truk base hex for some time and has observed little Japanese TF activity.

18 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base. No figures on Japanese ships detected in Truk have been available, not that I haven't been looking.

Unidentified Jap submarine detected NE of Baker Is (hex 99,91) - this sub conveniently placed beyond the reach of any U.S. ASW TF that can dart out to get it.

U.S. sub S-35 reports spotting one unidentified Jap TF in Canton Is base hex.

South Pacific: All sectors reporting quiet. Shipping routes between the U.S. and Australia/NZ moving normally in both directions.

Australia: No reported air or ground combat.

Detected status of Jap base in Daly Waters - no airfield damage, undetermined number of Jap planes, 34 Jap LCU's.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 9/5/43 (1/31/2009 9:00:12 PM)

Summary of Operations 9/5/43 Allied air forces in NW Australia achieve victory in several air actions against a heavily reinforced Japanese air contingent.

Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting no detected Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, off Japanese home islands. Jap air patrols (G4M Betty) are active at Pago Pago.

20 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base.

South Pacific: All sectors reporting quiet. SS Saury at Suva reporting contacts with G4M Betty and B6N2 Jill air patrols.

Australia: Allied air forces achieve a notable victory in NW Australia against a heavily-reinforced Japanese air contingent that Pillager had moved into Daly Waters air base - presence of this Jap air group had been detected in Daly Waters base over the past two game turns.

Estimated total plane losses in all actions - 257 Japanese planes destroyed, 44 Allied planes destroyed. The number of Jap planes lost is by far the highest number of Japanese aircraft destroyed in a single day's action for the entire war.

Three separate actions were carried out by USAAF and Australian air forces in Tennant Creek in response to the detected Jap air force in Daly Waters. It became apparent that a Japanese air attack on Tennant Creek would not be stopped before Pillager could launch it, however, Allied air forces could execute a series of actions that would scramble most if not all Allied planes off the ground as well as inflict serious damage and casualties to the Japanese air effort. Several Allied air squadrons with 50% or more damaged planes were transferred to rear-area base in Alice Springs to continue recovering damaged planes and move them away from the expected Jap attack.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 9/6/43 (2/1/2009 9:25:06 PM)

I have a game question.... any ideas or suggestions from readers would be quite welcome.

Loading LCU's and supply for amphibious operations - how much ship capacity (or how many ships) should I use for loading a LCU so that most or (preferably) all elements of the loaded LCU will disembark at the target hex in the first game turn (night and day phases) of an amphibious assault.

It's given that the answer to this question will vary with the size and type of LCU being carried for the assault, the type (or types) of ships the LCU is being loaded on (AP, LST, etc). The number of ships available for this operation is not a factor - I probably have as many as needed available if not more with nearly all possible ship types represented.

Current plans for this operation will have supply points loaded on separate ships (small AK, LCI's, etc) that will disembark alongside the transports carrying the attacking LCU(s).

Any ideas, suggestions, or directions to places in the forums covering this subject would be appreciated.

Alfred -> RE: Summary of Operations 9/6/43 (2/2/2009 4:24:17 AM)

wneuman,

Actually, the single most important determination is the size of the port where the disembarkation will occur.  Thus at a port size 1, you would want your transports to each be carrying less than 900 troop cargo points.  Lager ports allow for a greater carrying load.  For details see the maual re port unloading (sorry don't currently have access to the manual).

Alfred

India/Burma: Jap recon flight over Asansol.

Allied air transports begin flying supply over the Hump from Ledo to Chengtu. Probably should have started this sooner, but Chinese certainly need it now. Quantities of supply being flown to Chengtu will be restricted by airfield size at Ledo plus the rather slow overland movement of supply points from "mainland" India into Ledo base. HQ USAFFE (partially rebuilt) has been moved into Ledo in an attempt to speed up flow of supply into Ledo.

Detected status of Jap base in Daly Waters - airfield damage 23, no planes, 28 Jap LCU's.

Hudson I recon over Darwin reporting fighters on CAP, airfield damage 4, 452 aircraft (177 fighters, 20 bombers), 13 Jap LCU's.
Allied recon flights over Exmouth and Port Moresby reporting no detected activity or change in Jap forces.

India/Burma: No Jap recon flights. No reported air or ground combat.

F-5A recon over Rangoon reporting 408 aircraft (180 fighters, 23 bombers), 8 Jap LCU's, resource production 83(18), heavy industry 59(134).

China: Jap recon flight over Kunming. Life for "the Peanut" and his minions is becoming less than wonderful - some of the current status of things follows. Where's Mao when you need him?

Chinese supply status - The overall Chinese supply situation has become precarious in recent game turns, nearly all available supply in China being dedicated to ground operations. Air (supply) transport operations to China from India have begun over the Hump, however, the size of Ledo airbase and remoteness of Ledo from the main supply point sources in India is limiting the capacity of transporting supply by air.

State of the Chinese air force - Chinese air operations in general have become very limited due to the overall supply situation. Shortages of SB-2c and Il-4 replacement planes have forced withdrawal of all Chinese air force bomber squadrons from front-line service. Chinese bomber squadrons mostly upgrade to B-25J Mitchells (available 12/43) and were transferred to rear area bases in India to await availablity of B-25J's for upgrade - pilot experience levels in these squadrons are quite high (higher than nearly all USAAF B-25 squadrons) and it's likely that Chinese bomber squadrons will receive a high priority for upgrade to B-25's once sufficient planes become available.

Chinese fighter squadrons remain in China but operations have become very limited due to supply. Supply shortages have restricted ability to restore damaged planes to operational status.

Japanese air raids continue. Chinese fighters go up to oppose Jap air attack in Kunming. AAR's follow.

Latest Japanese ground attacks. AAR's follow. Pillager's ground attacks have "frozen" many of my Chinese LCU in place even though movement orders have been set (for some time) on these LCU to withdraw to Chungking or another friendly base in the rear. I am expecting to have many if not most Chinese LCU listed in the actions below to eventually be cut off and destroyed in their current locations. If so, Pillager will be advancing Japanese ground forces to the gates of Chungking and also a possible link up between Jap ground armies in China and northern Burma.
