Personally I think you are too cautious, the delay you have allowed has benefited the Japanese more then you. Do not wait for an AGC, sp? it only takes a little over 3 months to prep to 100% which is beter then waiting. In my opinion you have allowed him to reinforce and defend, vs taking the chance and pushing early at risk. Time is always on the allied side, definatly but you could have advanced very advantagously prior to now. Do not go with a linear attack. If you have prepped for 3 locations in different theartres and advance at the same time, he cannot cover all and if you win 2 out of 3 then so much the better. But your overall cautiousness plays more into his hand then yours. In my opinion the Allies cannot lose due to overwhelming supriority in arms and quality, no matter what Japanes fan boys may think, but you can make it more enjoyable for the Japanese by engaging earlier and making a game of it. Its the journey that matters, the conclusion is forgone, and for those that think otherwise, step back and realize only 1 maybe 2 AAR's have really been won by Japanese, and Hondas definatly a superior win.

Stldiver, Appreciate the advice. I have been extensively prepping LCU's for several objectives over the last three months, mainly for Canton Is and Pago Pago with Wake and Baker Is as secondary targets. Many of these LCU's are by now at or close to 100% prep level for their set objective - most LCU's targeted for these operations already located in forward bases within striking distance of their assigned targets. I've very likely been over-estimating Japanese capabilities throughout this game and I suspected that I was. What I've most appreciated in your remarks is that they support this assessment. At my current state of buildup in the Line Islands and Penhryn areas, simultaneous attacks on Canton and Pago Pago would be quite feasible with the forces at hand, the only thing I would need to do is bring in sufficient shipping capacity (and the right kinds of it) to launch the assaults. Carriers, shore bombardment, and other naval support can easily be assembled in the same time as required to get shipping into the area. The necessary "marching orders" could be put into effect within a matter of days. While going after Canton and Pago Pago is attacking on a relatively narrow front, it does allow the advantage of a single concentration of carrier and other naval support elements to cover either or both actions. No matter where I strike, it's going to be necessary to deal with operating beyond the range of friendly LBA. Once again, I appreciate your advice. Any pointers on amphibious ops you can provide or direct me to would be welcome.

Summary of Operatios 7/30/43 Once again a bit behind in posting, we're now playing the 8/4/43 game turn. Update on carrier aircraft updating... VT8 (CV Hornet) upgraded to TBM Avengers. With this upgrade five CV's (including Hornet) now operating TBM's. VT squadrons on three CV's (Wasp, Essex, Bunker Hill) and all six CVL's still equipped with TBF's. North Pacific: PBY Catalina recon over Paramushiro reporting Ki-43-II fighters on CAP, one Jap TF, 3 Jap LCU's (+1 from last report), Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting very light Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, and most locations off Japanese home islands. H8K Emily & G3M Nell air patrols active at Pago Pago. SS Sunfish off Sasebo reporting heavy Jap air patrols (Ki-46 Helen, Ki-48 Lily, Ki-49 Helen & E13A1 Jake). A U.S. sub (SS Puffer) has been on patrol in the Darwin base hex for several weeks and has reported no contacts with Jap surface TF's. While it is possible these LCU's may have arrived in Darwin from other bases in NW Australia, evidence does not indicate these LCU came from Daly Waters. Sigint report entry for 7/30 indicates Yokosuka 5 SNLF is now at Darwin. Previous location of this SNLF was Palembang on 4/24/43. Summary of Operations 8/3/43 I had been a little behind in posting - we were playing this game turn at the time stldiver and I had our discussion (top of this page). I'm not surprised at having overestimated Japanese capabilities up to this point in our game. The question is... how much and exactly what was I overestimating? That I will find out in due course. Between fog-of-war and this being my first match in WitP vs a live opponent (also the first time playing CHS) - at least in my instance, playing this game reproduced a psychological factor that existed through the first months of the historical war, namely the "shock and awe" effect of the initial Japanese attacks, the idea on the Allied side that the Japanese couldn't be defeated with what was available at the time. Historically this factor largely disappeared with the battles of Midway and Guadalcanal (neither of which has occurred to date in Pillagers' and my PBEM). Once I read stldiver's post, my conclusion was "you have a point there". So what to do now? Operation Gemini, dual attacks on the Japanese outer perimeter at Canton and Pago Pago. Factors behind the choice of these objectives. 1) These objectives are close enough where naval supporting forces (specifically carriers, shore bombardment, MSW) are in position to support amphibious ops at either or both locations. 2) I happen to have a substantial number of LCU's prepped to attack Canton and Pago Pago with others prepped for nearby islands at each location - probably prepped to the point of overkill. 3) A breach in the Japanese outer perimeter at either Canton or Pago Pago (or both) will create a situation where U.S. forces can drive a pincer from the south to outflank the Marshalls (specifically Kwajalein) or break into this island chain from the rear. Other U.S. LCU's have been prepping for a projected attack on Wake - this attack could be used as a northern pincer. However, there's a number of things that need to be set in place. 1) Shipping. U.S. shipping in the eastern Pacific at this time is widely scattered. Many ships are in small convoys travelling westward from the U.S. with LCU, aircraft, supply and/or fuel cargoes (many of these cargoes would not be for use in Operation Gemini), other ships are in port either on the U.S. west coast or bases outside the operational area for Gemini, still others returning from forward bases to the U.S. for refit or to pick up more cargo. a) Once convoys enroute from the U.S. arrive at their assigned destinations and unload cargo, orders will be issued for these ships to proceed to a central assembly point(s) for use in Operation Gemini instead of returning to the U.S. west coast for more cargo. b) Other (empty) transport ships or convoys now returning to the U.S. west coast are being re-routed to the assembly point(s) depending on their current location, need for a shipyard refit or upgrade, suitablity of individual ship(s) for use in the operation. Orders to re-route complete convoys or individual ship(s) within a convoy are now being issued. c) A number of transport ships (AK loaded with supply, TK with fuel) are already positioned as "floating warehouses" at several forward bases (mainly Pearl Harbor and Christmas Is). These ships will be allocated to Operation Gemini as detailed plans continue to develop. d) As many upgraded 4800 capacity AK's as possible (I forget the class name) will be brought forward and made available for Operation Gemini as plans justify their use. These AK have (or will have) a 6/43 upgrade providing these ships with an AA capability - about 70% of these AK already completed the upgrade. Many of the already upgraded AK in this class are in the U.S. west coast bases - these ships will be loaded with cargo and dispatched to forward bases. e) Small AK's. I have substantial numbers of these ships that successfully evacuated the Philippines and DEI in the first months of the war. These ships are possibly useful in a landing force to carry and quickly disembark supply points (or other suitable cargo) on the beach - my point being the small coastal AK's can unload faster and leave the area sooner than larger and more valuable AK's. A second possible use of small AK's is in a decoy amphibious TF. These ships are widely scattered and as many as possible are being collected for Operation Gemini. f) Most landing craft (LST and LCI) are already located in forward bases (mainly Pearl and Christmas Is). 2) Naval support forces - Most of the main U.S. carrier force, shore bombardment BB's, escort carriers are now located in Pearl Harbor. A small number of ships are refitting minor system damage, all other ships now available for action. Some plane upgrades are in progress with (CVL and CV) carrier squadrons - VF squadrons to F6F, VT squadrons to TBM. Dive bomber squadrons on all CV and CVL now equipped with SBD-5. Ship refits and aircraft upgrades on CV and CVL will continue over at least the next several weeks, then what we have is what we got. CVE fighter squadrons are projected to go into action with F4F's (not even close to enough F6F available to upgrade these). Carrier and naval warship reinforcements arriving in Panama City or the U.S. are being dispatched to Pearl Harbor as they enter the game. 3) LCU's - some units prepped for Canton and Pago Pago are already in place, others will need to be brought forward (mostly from Hawaii) to the jumping off bases for Operation Gemini. Many of these LCU are already 100% prepped for Pago Pago or Canton - prepped or prepping units include US Army and USMC divisions, Corps HQ, plus some supporting combat engineer and tank units. Orders forming and dispatching transport TF's to pick up and transport these LCU forward will occur over the next few days. 4) Organization. This is going to take a while, I'm projecting a 1-2 month time frame (though sooner if possible). I have islands sinking under the weight of what's already on them - sorting out who and what will be used in Operation Gemini and what remains behind (for now) is a small process. And now on to the news... North Pacific: PBY Catalina recon over Paramushiro Jima reporting Ki-43-II fighters on CAP, 9 aircraft (3 fighters), 3 Jap LCU's. Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting "normal" Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein. Light Jap air activity in Canton Is area, quiet at Pago Pago and off Japanese home islands. Summary of Operations 8/4/43 The initial phase of orders for ship and LCU movements for Operation Gemini is now underway. Transport TF's enroute back to the U.S. west coast from forward bases have been combed for AK and AP that will be useful and orders were issued re-routing these ships to assembly bases. Other transport TF have been formed for picking up prepped LCU's and moving them to forward jumping-off bases - LCU's will temporarily disembark in these bases on arrival to recover elements disrupted in transit and complete any prepping. Transport and auxiliary ships still on the U.S. west coast are being gradually loaded with cargo and then depart for forward bases - as many ships as possible that are now refitting or upgrading in west coast shipyards will also be included. Nearly all U.S. submarines, surface naval and carrier forces are already "in theatre" - they will remain in place for now (unless otherwise required) to complete as many needed ship refits and plane upgrades as time allows. Air planning for Operation Gemini consists pretty much as follows. Both Pago Pago and Canton Is are outside the operational range of U.S. land-based air from any existing U.S. controlled bases - this situation also includes recon and 4E bombers. Given this fact, all air support for the invasion forces will have to come from carrier-based squadrons. Plans are to employ CVE air combat TF's for close-in air defense (CAP) over the invasion fleet, ground support air missions over Canton and Pago Pago itself, and as a secondary (close-in) naval air strike force against approaching Japanese surface ships or carriers - currently there are eight U.S. CVE in service with a ninth one shortly arriving as a reinforcement. The U.S. carrier main body (all CV and CVL) will be the primary stand-off force to engage Japanese surface ships, not to mention a likely action vs the KB. Land-based air will remain in reserve during the initial stages until the base on Canton or Pago Pago is in U.S. hands. Base force LCU with air support elements will be landed as quickly as possible following the invasion assault LCU. Current plans are to transfer planes into Canton or Pago Pago by air instead of via sea transport (though the Long Island could be used to "drop" one in). The P-38G is anticipated to be the workhorse of land-based fighter cover Canton and Pago Pago once airbases can be established - as many P-38G equipped squadrons as possible will be made available for this task. Summary of Operations 8/17/43 Update on Operation Gemini: U.S. Carrier force main body is now operating from Palmyra (also location of HQ South Pacific) - this base the location from which carrier forces will eventually move forward to support Operation Gemini. Plane upgrades for USN CV and CVL-based squadrons continue, as many upgrades as possible will be completed as time and the replacement aircraft pool allows. VF squadrons on CV Hornet & CVL Cowpens upgrading to F6F Hellcats. With this upgrade, all CV's now operating F6F's. Only two CVL are still operating F4F Wildcats. All CVE fighter squadrons continue operating F4F's. No immediate plans to upgrade CVE squadrons to F6F before Operation Gemini is launched - not enough F6F in the replacement pool to do these and still allow for replacement of CV and CVL combat losses. Formation of CVE task forces is underway - nine CVE's are currently available (with one additional CVE in repair on the U.S. west coast). Plan is to form three CVE task forces which will operate stacked together with the invasion fleet(s). Primary functions of CVE task forces will be to provide (1) close-in fighter CAP over the invasion fleet, and (2) ground attack air support for LCU in the landing force. Projected composition of CVE task forces is 3 CVE with escorting destroyers. CVE task forces with the invasion fleet(s) will enable the Carrier force main body (CV & CVL) to strictly engage the KB and Jap surface naval TF's. A large force of U.S. submarines (20-30 subs) is also planned to operate in conjunction with Operation Gemini. These subs will operate as a "saturation patrol" in the sea areas to the N and NW of Pago Pago and Canton Is. Many LCU available or planned to operate in Operation Gemini are already located or now arriving at the forward departure base. Arriving LCU's are disembarking temporarily to recover elements disabled in transit. All major LCU earmarked for Operation Gemini are at or near 100% prepped for their designated objectives. Current LCU assignments are as follows, note that some changes and additions are now under consideration as well. I am suspecting that Pillager is reinforcing Canton Is with the expectation that it is the main target of a U.S. offensive. With this in mind, I am considering the option of using my preparations for attacking Canton Is as a "decoy" (much as the Channel coast in France was used to draw German forces away from Normandy) while retaining the ability to launch a real attack on Canton either immediately or later on. I added Tongatapu to the mix as this island is a "flanking" position to Pago Pago and with Tongatapu under U.S. control it also would be possible to shift part of the U.S. to Australia/NZ shipping route northward (which would shorten it). Known disposition of Japanese LCU's is as follows. Pago Pago (7 LCU detected) - including 52 Naval Gd, 1 AA Regiment Savaii (4 LCU detected) - including 5 NLF, 127 IJAAF Base Force Upolu (3 LCU detected) - including 42 & 61 Naval Gd, 140 IJN Base Force Canton Is (13 LCU detected) - including South Seas Det, 43 Naval Gd, 18 Reserve & 6 Coastal Gun Rgts, 24 Aviation Unit, four Construction Bns Gardner Is (7 LCU detected) - including 144 IJNAF Base Force, six Construction Bns Sydney Is (no detected LCU) - however intel data places 21 NLF and five Construction Bns on Sydney Is Information available from known intel data tracking Jap divisions makes it unlikely that a division-size LCU is present in either the Pago Pago or Canton Is area. However, the possibility of this is not being excluded. Some information on Japanese LBA at Pago Pago and Canton Is is available from contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese aircraft. G3M Nell and B6N2 Jill planes have continuously operated from Pago Pago, G4M Betty from Canton Is, with long range naval search (H8K Emily) flying from both locations. With the network of available Japanese air bases in the Pacific, it would be a rather simple matter for Pillager to quickly dispatch Japanese LBA reinforcements to Canton or Pago Pago from elsewhere in the Pacific. I'm not expecting Japanese fighter CAP to be particularly heavy over either Canton or Pago Pago, especially given the large number of IJA fighters operating over Burma, China, and NW Australia and that it would take longer to transfer (by air) fighter planes into Canton or Pago Pago given their shorter range as compared to bombers. Summary of Operations 8/20/43 Preparations for Operation Gemini continue. Three CVE task forces formed and departed Pearl Harbor - each CVE task force composed of 3 CVE's, one Omaha CVL (flagship), and 10-11 escorting DD's. CVE TF's are intended to provide aircraft operating as CAP over the invasion TF's and also for close-support airstrikes against ground, naval, or other targets as needed.
