Alfred -> RE: Summary of Operations 10/13/43 (3/15/2009 7:53:37 AM)

Isn't it time (with runway damage now down to 0%), that you now flooded Pago Pago with Allied fighters to provide CAP and sweep Upolu.  If they are outside air transport range, temporarily load Marine fighter units onto Allied CVs and then fly them off deck from a safe stand off range.  That way you avoid risking sea transport and the slow unload times due to 100% port damage.

Alfred

wneumann -> RE: Summary of Operations 10/13/43 (3/17/2009 4:19:06 AM)

Alfred,

Being four game turns behind on posting AAR's (we're playing the 10/17 game turn now), the zero runway damage at Pago Pago didn't last beyond the 10/13 game turn - Pillager quickly "corrected" that turn of events.

In any event... there is one squadron of F4U's now on Pago Pago (they transferred into Pago Pago shortly after the base was captured), the planes in this squadron were very quickly damaged and base facilities on Pago Pago have been unable to repair these planes back to operational condition. There is sufficient supply points on hand and a base force LCU on Pago Pago with enough aviation support elements to recover damaged aircraft. The problem could be that airfield service damage level on Pago Pago is great enough where repair of damaged planes is very slow or no repair activity is going on at all.

As far as sending fighter squadrons to Pago Pago... the planes are available at Penhryn (nearly 200 fighters total - all P-47's, P-38's, and F4U's) and most if not all these planes can transfer directly from Penhryn to Pago Pago without using carriers. The problem I'm seeing with sending those squadrons to Pago Pago - once they're on Pago Pago and their planes become damaged for any reason, under the current situation those planes won't be repaired, they're going to remain grounded and become stationary targets for Pillager's air raids.

I'm seeing two things I'm going to need to do... (1) Send LCU reinforcements to Upolu and finish capturing the base on that island - this action will eliminate or push back the Japanese LBA now operating from Upolu (a considerable part of Jap air attacks in the Pago Pago area are being launched by LBA operating from the Upolu airfield still in Jap control). (2) send a convoy to land supply and a large enough horde of Seabees on Pago Pago to repair the airfield regardless of Japanese air bombing attacks. These steps will probably need to be done in the order I mentioned them above.

Only after both those actions are successfully accomplished will it be possible to get airbases on Pago Pago, Savaii, and Upolu sufficiently repaired to support air ops.

wneumann -> RE: Strategic Maps - 10/15/43 (3/21/2009 4:11:59 PM)

Cantona,

No problem posting the maps, haven't done them in a long time.

Cleaning up Pago Pago will take up much of my attention for the near future - "liberation" of Savaii and Upolu has to be completed. Without going too extensively into detail... it's going to be awhile before the next major amphibious operation. The ship losses at Pago Pago weren't that heavy, but the invasion left me with a large number of damaged ships and ships badly needing a refit. Shipyards on the U.S. west coast are now very busy.

While only BB Tennessee was sunk (and that loss could have been prevented), all but two of the "old" Allied BB's received significant damage (some of them heavy) which leaves me with no shore bombardment TF for at least several months. BB's weren't hit quite as bad off Pago Pago as they were at Pearl Harbor on 12/7/41, but it's close.

Newer U.S. BB's are all assigned as escorts in carrier TF's - that mission is priority for these ships and there are no plans at this time to change these BB's from that mission.

Pago Pago was the first amphibious invasion I've launched in WitP, against either the AI or a human opponent. I would have preferred an easier invasion to launch for my first try but Pillager didn't leave me with one. Pillager certainly planned the location of his Japanese outer perimeter well - I had no easy avenue of approach. Pago Pago as an initial invasion site appeared as the best of many more-or-less equally bad choices.

With the availablilty of longer range Allied fighters (P-38J's, P-47's, Thunderbolt II's), now that my 4E bombers have (or will soon have) fighter escorts to their targets in sufficiently large numbers, the skies over Darwin and Rangoon could soon be lit up. While these are rather small actions in the big scheme of things, they could serve useful in chipping away at Pillager's replacement plane and pilot pools over and above damage to targets "on the ground" (and results thereof).

Also looking at things I can do "on the ground" in Australia and making some preparations.

At this point in 1943, the Allies have the numbers and material to successfully attack. Taking on (and defeating) Japanese forces at "close quarters" is absolutely necessary to an Allied victory. The placement of Pillager's outer perimeter has made it difficult to engage Japanese forces (in the Central & South Pacific) effectively at "close quarters" - taking away the use of Allied LBA, the distance and time required for sea movement by an invasion force eliminating any possibility of surprise (not to mention giving Pillager time to concentrate Jap forces against an Allied "point of attack").

I'm seeing Pago Pago in this game as my "Guadalcanal" - the U.S. will pull it out in the end, though it's gonna be long and nasty.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 10/16/43 (3/21/2009 4:52:03 PM)

Summary of Operations 10/16/43

Central Pacific: U.S. subs continue reporting very light or no Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, Truk, and off Japanese home islands. No reported contacts between U.S. submarines and Jap surface ships or ASW in any of the above locations.

Jap AK Burma Maru confirmed sunk - attacked by SS Drum near Okinawa on 10/14.

18 Jap ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base, one ship detected at anchor in Truk.
F-5A recon over Canton Is reporting 14 aircraft, 16 Jap LCU's.

South Pacific: All sectors other than Pago Pago continue reporting quiet.

Day 31 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago area is heavy precipitation.

Three small Jap TF's spotted at Upolu, probably Pillager's version of the "Tokyo Express".
Jap recon flight over Pago Pago.

U.S. sub Crevalle attacked and damaged (system damage 51, float 52) in Pago Pago base hex by D4Y Judy air patrol.

Emphasis in this game turn's activity in the Pago Pago area again consists of Japanese LBA bombing raids against base facilities on Pago Pago and Savaii, also a Jap ground attack strike against U.S. Americal Division on Upolu.

Current status of Pago Pago base - runway damage 89, airfield service damage 100, port damage 100.
Current status of Savaii base - runway damage 99, airfield service damage 91, port damage 9.

Little or nothing can be done to repair base damage on Pago Pago or Savaii under the current situation. The base at Upolu has to be captured before any action to begin effective base repair at Pago Pago or Savaii can begin.

U.S. divisions (1st Cavalry & Americal) on Upolu has adequate supply on hand to effectively defend themselves against a Japanese ground counterattack - but insufficient for these divisions to attack themselves. Current U.S. priority in the Pago Pago area is landing LCU reinforcements on Upolu to complete capture of the base there. HQ I Amphibious Corps & 37th Division are prepping (as much as time allows) for Upolu, possibly additional small LCU's will be added as available transport ship and LST capacity allows.

AAR's of Jap air attacks follow.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 10/19/43 (3/22/2009 7:15:33 PM)

Summary of Operations 10/19/43

Central Pacific: U.S. subs continue reporting very light or no Jap air patrol activity near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, and off Japanese home islands.

SS Nautilus spots two Japanese TF's (probable transports) off Jaluit - one TF consists of 5 ships, the second TF has four. Nautilus engaged one of the two TF's, AAR follows. Both Jap TF's moving on a NW heading probably returning from Canton Is.

U.S. subs Peto & Mingo spot and unsuccessfully attack a Jap transport TF (4 ships spotted, moving on W heading) east of Formosa. AAR follows. SS Peto and Mingo were approaching an assigned patrol area between Luzon and Formosa.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 51,48 (two attacks, no hits)

Japanese Ships
TK Nisshin Maru

Allied Ships
SS Peto

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base, one ship detected in Truk. SS Narwhal at Truk reports one contact with F1M2 Pete air patrol.

F-5A recon over Canton Is reports 22 aircraft (none operational?), 16 Jap LCU's. Recent recon flights over Canton Is have reported Jap aircraft at that base but have not encountered fighters (in the air) on CAP.

South Pacific: Sectors other than Pago Pago remain quiet. Normal movement of Allied shipping between the U.S. and Australia/NZ.

Day 34 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago area remains precipitation. No reported ground combat this game turn on Savaii or Upolu.

Damaged CV Victorious unexpectedly sinks while at anchor at Penhryn Is base. Victorious reached Penhryn on 10/18 and was disbanded into port with system damage 56, float 93, no fire. Penhryn Is has a size 4 port, 144K supply on hand, HQ Asiatic Fleet (rebuilt to full TOE strength) stationed at the base, but no AR ships (nearest AR ships to Penhryn are at Christmas Is). Penhryn Is base has earlier removed float damage successfully to 10-15 ships of all types damaged during the initial invasion ops at Pago Pago, so not a question of Penhryn Is being unable to repair ship damage within the ability of what is located there. CV Saratoga is now repairing float damage in Penhryn and should be able to safely depart Penhryn for the U.S. west coast in a matter of days.

I've had rather bad fortune with British CV's in this particular WitP match - all four Victorious CV's and CVL Hermes are now sunk. I thought CV Victorious would fare better as part of the U.S. carrier "death star" - matched up as a "CVL" in a TF with CV Saratoga.

SS Cisco torpedoes Jap AK off Savaii. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 95,111

Japanese Ships
AK Akitsu Maru, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage (confirmed sunk)

Allied Ships
SS Cisco

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Current status of Pago Pago base - runway damage 74, airfield service damage 100, port damage 100.
Current status of Savaii base - runway damage 98, airfield service damage 93, port damage 9. (no engineer LCU on Savaii)

Japanese LBA air attacks continue against U.S. 1st Cavalry & Americal Divisions on Upolu. No substantial losses or disruption to either of these LCU, supply situation remains fairly good given the circumstances. No Jap air attacks this game turn on base facilities on Pago Pago or Savaii. Summary of Operations 10/19/43, part deux.

Australia: No reported ground or air combat.

Hudson I recon over Darwin reports fighters on CAP, one Jap TF, 2 ships disbanded in port, 12 Jap LCU's.
Detected status of Jap base in Daly Waters - airfield damage 70, 28 Jap LCU's.

Known Japanese LCU's in Daly Waters include the following - 2nd & 5th Infantry Divisions; 3 Mountain Gun Rgt; 3, 5 & 14 Mortar Bns; 18 Heavy Field Art Rgt; 1 & 6 Reserve AA Rgts; 7, 23, 41 & 51 AA Rgts; 35, 53 & 56 Heavy AA Bns; 1 Engineer Rgt; 7 AF Construction Bn; HQ 2nd Area Army; plus nine additional unidentified Jap LCU (I suspect at least some of these are construction engineer LCU's given the continuing level of attempted repair activity to bomb damage on airfield facilties in Daly Waters).

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 10/21/43 (3/28/2009 4:44:17 PM)

Summary of Operations 10/21/43

Central Pacific: Very light or no Jap air patrol activity reported by U.S. subs near Kwajalein, Canton Is area, and at Truk. Several contacts with Ki-49 Helen air patrols reported by subs off Japanese home islands.

No reported contacts in any of the above locations between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships or ASW.

3 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base, 8 ships detected at anchor in Truk.
F-5A recon over Canton Is repors 11 aircraft, 16 Jap LCU's.

South Pacific: All sectors other than Pago Pago continue to be quiet.

Day 36 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago area is for overcast. No ground combat on Savaii or Upolu this game turn.

Supply airlifts have been underway for several days from Penhryn Is to Pago Pago and Savaii bases, as well as to U.S. LCU's on Upolu - these missions being carried out by four squadrons (48 aircraft total) of P4Y Liberators. P4Y's appear to be the only planes in the current U.S. "inventory" with sufficient range (14 hexes) to reach points in the Pago Pago area from Penhryn. Several additional P4Y squadrons in South or SW Pacific commands have been located in other rear area bases and now being brought forward to reinforce the supply airlift effort. Allowing for the number of P4Y's on hand at Penrhyn, resting of pilots and recovery of damaged planes, along with the fact that these planes are attempting to supply three locations (Pago Pago, Savaii, Upolu) at once, there isn't a large quantity of supply going to any one location (I'm shifting destinations of supply flights back and forth according to what's needed "on the ground"). Up to this time, P4Y Liberator supply flights are operating undetected and without Japanese interference. Penhryn Is base has 146K supply on hand with fresh stocks continuing to arrive.

SS Sculpin reported damaged (system damage 34, float 41) at Upolu from unknown causes. Japanese mines are known to still be in Upolu base hex, which may be a possible cause of damage to the Sculpin.

Current status of Pago Pago base - runway damage 83, airfield service damage 100, port damage 100.
Current status of Savaii base - runway damage 99, airfield service damage 100, port damage 9.

Jap recon flight over Pago Pago. Jap air attacks continue against Pago Pago and Savaii bases, also ground strike air attacks against U.S. 1st Cavalry & Americal Divisions on Upolu. AAR's follow.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 10/22/43 (3/29/2009 7:42:45 PM)

Summary of Operations 10/22/43

Aircraft upgrades nearing completion for many front-line USAAF and Allied fighter squadrons, particularly in Australia and India/Burma theatres.

Seven of the 11 P-38 equipped USAAF squadrons in Australia now upgraded to P-38J's, the four remaining squadrons all having P-38G's. All P-38J squadrons in Australia are based at Tennant Creek and set to operate as escorts in a series of 4E bomber strikes planned against Darwin. Two other USAAF fighter squadrons in Australia have upgraded from P-40N's to P-47D, priority for P-47 and Thunderbolt II upgrades being given to fighter squadrons operating in India (most front-line fighter squadrons upgradeable to P-47's or Thunderbolt II's are located in India). Most front-line P-38 squadrons are operating in Australia, with priority for P-38J upgrades going to squadrons based there.

Five USAAF fighter squadrons in India (including all three AVG squadrons) now operating P-47D's, with three RAF squadrons now flying Thunderbolt II. Two other USAAF squadrons in India now equipped with P-38J's. A similar plan for P-47D, Thunderbolt II, and P-38J equipped fighter squadrons based in NE India to escort 4E bomber attacks on Rangoon and other locations in Burma is in the works.

Limited numbers of P-51B Mustang and Spitfire VIII fighters also beginning to appear in front-line service. At least in CHS, production rates for both P-51B's and Spitfire VIII is very slow. P-47D production is somewhat faster, though not sufficient to rapidly upgrade fighter squadrons on a large scale. Another consideration with aircraft upgrades is building and keeping an adequate "reserve" of planes in the replacement pool for each type to cover combat and operational plane losses (that being a problem I encountered earlier in 1942 with large-scale upgrades to P-40E and Hurricane II's).

U.S. air squadrons arriving at Pacific front-line bases have either entered the game as reinforcements already equipped with advanced plane types, or upgrading to these types shortly before departure from the U.S. west coast to forward bases. No F4F Wildcats remain in operational front-line service (though several squadrons in "training mode" still have them) - all fleet CV based squadrons now flying F6F's, USN and USMC front-line LBA fighter squadrons with F6F's or F4U Corsairs. USAAF squadrons in Central and South Pacific theatres equipped with a mix of P-47C's and P-38D's - P-47D's and P-38J's also present in smaller numbers.

A major problem for me in the Pacific theatres is getting LBA into bases where they can start flying combat ops within their range - Pillager's placement of the Japanese outer perimeter in our game making effective deployment of U.S. land-based aircraft in the Pacific up to this time virtually impossible. Pago Pago could change that situation considerably once fully operational U.S. air bases are in place and I can start effectively introducing LBA into airfields on Pago Pago, Upolu, and Savaii.

Moving on with today's news from the front...

Central Pacific: Jap air patrol activity remains very light to none in the Kwajalein area, near Canton Is, Truk and off Japanese home islands. SS Mingo off Batan Is reporting several contacts with Jap aircraft. Appears that Pillager has now committed most available Japanese LBA in the Pacific theatres against Pago Pago.

U.S. submarines operating in the locations mentioned above reporting no contacts with Japanese surface ships or ASW.

11 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base, 3 ships detected at anchor at Truk.
F-5A recon over Canton Is reports 15 aircraft, 16 Jap LCU's.

South Pacific: Locations other than Pago Pago continue reporting quiet.

Day 37 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago area is clear. No reported ground combat this game turn on Upolu or Savaii.

SS Capelin reports contact with Jap ASW TF north of Wallis Is. SS Cisco off Savaii spots two Jap TF's, torpedoes a Jap AK. AAR's follow.

Summary of Operations 10/22/43 part deux.

Australia: No reported land or air combat.

Allied recon flights over Exmouth and Port Moresby reporting no detected Jap activity or change in Jap forces. A6M5 fighters on CAP encountered over Port Moresby.
Detected status of Jap base in Daly Waters - airfield damage 100, 28 Jap LCU's.

Hudson I recon over Darwin reporting fighters on CAP, 2 Jap TF's (+1 from last report), 2 ships at anchor in port, 13 Jap LCU's. Jap minesweeping ops continue in Darwin. SS Harder reports surface ASW attack, AAR follows.

DEI: Allied submarine patrol TF from Colombo (5 subs) entered the Java Sea, now dispersed as single-sub TF's moving to individual patrol areas.

I've developed a general practice of moving numbers of subs forward to operational areas as a "wolfpack", then breaking up the pack into individual subs near their designated patrol locations. Object of this practice is keeping exact numbers of Allied subs moving into a given sea area disguised from "Japanese eyes" until the last possible moment.

India/Burma: Jap recon flight over Imphal. No reported air or ground combat.

F-5A recon over Rangoon reports one Jap TF (+1 from last report), 700 aircraft (296 fighters, 39 bombers), resource production 87(14), heavy industry 68(125), 8 Jap LCU's. This report shows a siginificant increase in numbers of Jap aircraft in Rangoon from the report on 10/21 - may account for the reduced level of Jap air attacks in Southern China from bases at Lashio and Mandalay, also lack of Japanese fighter opposition to sweep mission launched against Mandalay by Chinese P-40N's on 10/21.

China: Jap recon flights over Tuyun, Kunming, Chungking. Latest AAR's of Japanese bombing attacks in China follow.

A TF consisting of CV Saratoga with escorts (BB Prince of Wales, 2 CA, 1 CL, 9 DD) departed Penhryn this game turn for Christmas Is and an eventual destination on the U.S. west coast to complete repair of CV Saratoga and refits to escorting ships. BB Prince of Wales and CV Saratoga both planned to also undergo 12/43 and 1/44 ship upgrades while on the U.S. west coast. Other escort ships in the Saratoga's TF were drawn from ships in the U.S. Carrier Main Force with highest levels of minor system damage (greatest immediate need to undergo refit) - most escorts in Saratoga's TF return ASAP to swap out with other escort ships in U.S. Carrier Force TF's with combat damage or with most need to undergo refit.
