Detected status of Jap base on Paramushiro Jima - 1 Jap TF, airfield damage 14, 34 aircraft (16 fighters), 3 Jap LCU's.

Presently I have no strategic plans in place for the North Pacific theatre - while it is the shortest route to Japan, it also has it's drawbacks. However, construction has been completed at many bases in the Aleutians with airfields and ports built up to maximum or near-maximum sizes. Adak Is has replaced Anchorage as the "central" base for operations in the North Pacific theatre - HQ's and support LCU's in the North Pacific have transferred from Anchorage to Adak. Adak is also the primary support base for U.S. submarine ops off the Japanese home islands. All larger bases in the Aleutians are well-garrisoned with substantial quantities of supply and fuel on hand.

In the event I have future strategic plans for operations from the North Pacific, a large part of the facilities and logistical support for this is already in place.

Central Pacific: No Japanese air patrol activity reported by U.S. subs operating near Kwajalein, at Truk, or off Japanese home islands.

40 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base, no report on Japanese ships at Truk.
Detected status of Jap base in Tokyo - 170 ships in port, 9 LCU's.

F-5A recon over Canton Is reporting 1 Jap TF, 150 aircraft (79 bombers), 16 Jap LCU's. Pillager appears to be gradually transferring Jap planes into Canton Is base. SS Tautog in Canton Is base hex reports contacts with H8K Emily, B6N2 Jill, and G4M Betty air patrols.

South Pacific: All sectors other than Pago Pago continue reporting quiet.

Day 53 of Pago Pago Operations - Latest weather forecast for Pago Pago area is continued overcast. No detected or reported naval activity this game turn.

Preparations to assemble a second invasion force for landing at Upolu are approaching completion. Of the major LCU's in this force, HQ I Amphib Corps and 37th Division are already at Penrhyn Is with a second division (32nd) now enroute to Penhryn. Estimated arrival date of 32nd Division at Penhryn is 6-8 game turns. Sufficient transport ships for the second invasion operation are already at Penrhyn. Support of the second Upolu invasion fleet will come from the U.S. carrier main force (minus CV Saratoga - enroute to U.S. for repairs), no surface combat or bombardment TF support for this operation is available as many of these ships were heavily damaged by Jap air attacks during the initial Pago Pago invasion.

Current status of Pago Pago base - runway damage 86, airfield service damage 100, port damage 100.
Current status of Savaii base - runway damage 98, airfield service damage 100, port damage 9.

Jap LBA air attacks against base facilities on Pago Pago and Savaii, also ground attack air strikes on U.S. LCU's on Upolu. Latest AAR's follow.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 11/7/43 (4/18/2009 5:19:44 PM)

Summary of Operations 11/7/43 - continued

Australia: No reported ground or air combat. Preparations well underway for an Allied land offensive from Coen against the Jap base at Portland Roads - this action eliminating the Japanese from any substantial foothold in NE Australia. Capture of Portland Roads is at this time considered a prerequisite to Allied ground offensive ops from Tennant Creek into NW Australia. Elimination of the Japanese bridgehead at Portland Roads also releases many of the Allied combat LCU's now in NE Australia for later ground operations in the NW and places Allied air forces within effective attack range of Port Moresby.

Catalina I recon over Port Moresby reports A6M5 fighters on CAP, 7 Jap LCU's. SS Salmon in Port Moresby base hex reporting several Ki-49 Helen air patrols.

Detected status of Jap base at Daly Waters - 9 Jap LCU's, no aircraft.
Hudson I recon over Darwin reports fighters on CAP, 31 Jap LCU's.
Hudson I recon over Exmouth reporting 30 aircraft (16 bombers), 5 Jap LCU's.

India/Burma: As Pillager has transferred most or all Japanese planes out of bases in central and northern Burma (appears these planes are now in Rangoon), Allied fighter, fighter-bomber, and light bomber squadrons in NE India now transferred to forward bases to launch strafing and bombing attacks on targets of opportunity north of Rangoon.

Most Chinese AF fighter squadrons (including the Den of Thieves) have previously transferred southward into bases in NE India due to lack of supply for air ops in China and also for upgrading their planes. Chinese fighter squadrons are in good shape - all are now equipped with P-40N's, two squadrons upgrading to P-47D's, pilot experience levels of all Chinese fighter squadrons now in the 60's and 70's. The Chinese have already appeared in the skies over northern Burma and will continue.

AAR's of air actions over Burma follow.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 11/12/43 (4/24/2009 5:06:47 AM)

Summary of Operations 11/12/43

Central Pacific: Same Jap air patrol activity (G4M Betty, G5N Liz, E13A1 Jake) reported by U.S. subs operating near Kwajalein. Light Jap air patrols again spotted by U.S. subs off Japanese home islands.

197 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Tokyo. No report of ships detected at anchor at Kwajalein or Truk.

F-5A recon over Canton Is reports no detected activity or change in Jap forces. SS Tautog in Kwajalein base hex continues reporting contacts with B6N2 Jill & G4M Betty air patrols.

South Pacific: Sectors other than Pago Pago area remain quiet. Shipping between U.S. west coast and Australia/NZ proceeding normally.

Day 58 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago area is partly cloudy.

U.S. 32nd Division arrived this game turn at Penrhyn Is for employment as part of the second Upolu landing force to reinforce 1st Cavalry & Americal Divisions and complete the capture of Upolu base. Number of ships and shipping capacity currently on hand in Penrhyn base (LST, LCI, smaller AP's & AK's) is insufficient for transporting the planned second landing force (HQ I Amphib Corps plus 32nd & 37th Divisions) to Upolu.

The present shortage of available shipping is largely due to many transports and landing craft participating in the initial Pago Pago invasion returning from Pago Pago with damage from Japanese air attack or with significant system damage requiring refit. Nearly all damaged ships returning from the Pago Pago operation were dispatched to Pearl Harbor or to shipyards on the U.S. west coast for repairs - all but the most heavily damaged of these ships have now completed or are shortly completing repairs and just beginning their return from Pearl Harbor or the U.S. west coast.

SS Dragonet damaged (system damage 29, float 30) in air attack by G5N Liz air patrol northeast of Savaii.

Continued Jap LBA air attacks against base facilities on Pago Pago and Savaii. LBA air attacks resume against U.S. LCU's on Upolu. Jap recon flight over Pago Pago. Latest AAR's follow.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 11/15/43 (4/25/2009 3:33:46 PM)

Summary of Operations 11/15/43

Hornblower - appreciate the post. We'll keep on keeping on. Moving on to today' news...

North Pacific: Detected status of Jap base at Paramushiro Jima - airfield damage 25, 24 aircraft (17 fighters), 3 Jap LCU's.

I don't have a set objective in the northern areas at this time. For now, the whole premise of hitting Paramushiro consists of (1) I have a large well built-up airfield (on Attu) with ample supply on hand and a garrison sufficient to occupy the island and capable of supporting air ops, (2) a modest number of 4E bombers in the North Pacific with not much else to do for the moment, and (3) an enemy target (Paramushiro) within their striking range. Also several small benefits to this operation - a small number of extra VP in my pocket every so often, pilot training for a few bomber squadrons, along with giving Pillager something else (however small) besides Pago Pago to keep track of.

If at some point in the future a suitable objective appears in the North Pacific theatre and large-scale offensive operations are feasible, much of the base and support facilities to do this are already in place and waiting.

Central Pacific: U.S. subs report a slightly reduced number of Jap air patrols near Kwajalein - Jap patrols in this area now entirely G4M Betty. Light Jap air activity reported by U.S. subs in areas off the Japanese home islands.

46 Japanese ships detected at anchor in Kwajalein base, no report of ships anchored at Truk.

Detected status of Jap base at Canton Is - 1 Jap TF, 70 aircraft (23 bombers), 16 Jap LCU's. SS Tautog at Canton reports one contact with B6N2 Jill air patrol.

No reported contacts between U.S. subs and Japanese surface ships or ASW in the Central Pacific theatre area or off Japanese home islands.

South Pacific: Sectors other than Pago Pago area quiet.

Day 61 of Pago Pago Operations - Weather forecast for Pago Pago area is continued partly cloudy.

With Pillager holding all the (known) Japanese air forces in Burma in Rangoon, operating bases for nearly the entire Allied air force in NE India have transferred forward into front-area airfields (Dacca, Imphal, Chittagong), all within easy striking range of Jap bases and LCU's in central and northern Burma. Allied air strikes against Jap LCU's and airfields will be continued to the greatest extent possible - if Pillager transfers Jap fighters north from Rangoon, plans are to change Allied air attacks in central and northern Burma to fighter sweeps to engage and destroy Jap aircraft. Plans are also underway to transfer USAAF and RAF Liberators forward to increase the number of fighter escorts on bombing raids against Rangoon.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 11/17/43 (4/26/2009 5:06:53 PM)

Summary of Operations 11/17/43

I've been constantly behind with posting in here (game turn by game turn being a bit time consuming) - my reporting in here usually being several game turns behind where Pillager and I are currently playing. I'll have to start adding a map or two here from time to time to keep a "visual" picture of current situations even though the vast majority of activity between Pillager and I hasn't been visible in terms of seeing it on the game map - the "front lines" being rather static.

Would be nice for the "trench warfare" to end and the Allies to start pushing forward. I'm beginning to take the view that Pillager is going to strongly defend the Japanese outer perimeter (which he has made rather skillful use of the the game map's "geography" to prepare) - he has left me with a very limited number of locations where the Allies can effectively approach the Japanese perimeter and take them on at close quarters. Attacking the Japanese perimeter in our game is much like cracking open a safe - the Allies have one "stick of dynamite", use it well. To break through the Japanese outer perimeter in this game, I'm expecting that pushing back Pillager will require the destruction of a large portion of Japanese forces.

I'm also taking the view that a large part of Pillager's overall Japanese strategy is centered around attrition of Allied forces - actually a major part of my Allied strategy as well once it gets going. Destruction of enemy forces in this match could be a more critical factor in the final outcome than owning "real estate" (not that "real estate" is unimportant). In this kind of scenario - haste is waste. Even with all the reinforcements coming in, if the Allies lose their ability to effectively attack, it's over...

Climbing off the soapbox and moving on to today's news...
