The KB may be returning home from its sortie against the Allied southern shipping lane to Australia. Australia: Jap recon flights over Coen and Cairns. Allied ground forces continue moving northward towards Portland Roads. Catalina I recon over Port Moresby reports N1K fighters on CAP, 8 Jap LCU's. Jap planes continue ground attack strikes against Allied LCU's advancing on Daly Waters, these strikes again intercepted by Allied LRCAP fighters. Total of 11 Japanese planes destroyed. Just caught up with last few days posts. I think the move of USN CVs to Raratonga in order to catch KB is a serious mistake because: (a) any probable action will be outside of Allied LBA range, (b) it is difficult to locate enemy CVs in that region and consequently Allied naval assets are being drawn out of position from the vital area = Samoa (c) suppression of enemy air strikes against Pago Pago is far more important than chasing after rabbits (d) Savaii remains vulnerable (due to lack of supplies) to a Japanese counter landing and Japanese reinforcements can be landed on Upololu whilst Pago Pago airbase remains suppressed and Allied CVs are either sunk or merely out of position/sortie damaged from chasing rabbits Alfred

Alfred, Thoroughly agree with your points. I am behind in posting AAR's - carriers have already been turned back to Penhryn. There has been no further sightings or contact with the KB, I've dispatched several lone transports into the area from east (Papaete) and west (Wellington) and neither has any reported contacts. I also had PBM's flying naval search from from Rarotonga and bases in NZ (north island) - none of these planes picked up any contacts. I made the move on the premise Pillager had either moved the KB into a vulnerable position (expending its air ops to attack dispersed transports) or made some other mistake with it that would result in a favorable attack opportunity. I had no plans to move the carrier force beyond Rarotonga unless the KB's location and disposition was known, and a favorable attack opportunity had presented itself - neither of which happened.

While there is no solid information indicating a large-scale Japanese build-up in the Kuriles and Sakhalin, or any indication that the Japanese have detected ship movements (into Adak Is) that are underway in preparation for Operation Bulldog, serious thought now has to be given as to whether a U.S. offensive in the North Pacific remains feasible. Known Japanese forces recently arriving in this area include one LCU (1 Mortar Rgt) and a modest number of planes transferred to Paramushiro. What is not known is whether and (if so) how much the Japanese have reinforced other bases in the Kuriles and Sakhalin area. Pillager's options in obtaining LCU's to reinforce the northern area are somewhat limited. Intel has repeatedly shown he has already transferred most of the Kwantung Army units he can remove from Manchuria/Korea southward to garrison Pacific bases. A more likely source of Japanese LCU reinforcements for the north would be from elsewhere in the Japanese home islands area plus Jap LCU's entering the game as reinforcements in Japan proper. Central Pacific: U.S. subs off the Japanese home islands report light Jap air patrols; no detected air activity near Kwajalein, Truk, or Canton Is area. I notice that you seem to be recently flying your B-25s against Daly Waters at only 100 feet. Others are much better qualified than me to comment on aircraft altitudes but it seems to me that 100 feet for bombers on ground attack is too low. At that height I would expect you to be fully exposed to enemy AA and suffer widespread damage, thereby limiting the number of bombers actually able to arrive over the target to deliver their payload and affecting aircraft maintenance turnaround times. To me this seems to explain why the caualties inflicted on the IJA 2nd Div and 14th Tank Rgt were so light. Alfred

Alfred, Interesting point and something I need to closely look at. I've been doing low-level ground attack strikes for several months against Jap LCU's in Burma, ground attack strikes at low altitude in that theatre have been effective (or at least appearing that way). However, most of the Allied planes flying these strikes at low altitude in Burma have been fighter or fighter-bomber types. A small number of B-25G/H bombers have also been employed in these strikes effectively, though this particular version of the B-25 is armed with a 75mm cannon which might account for its strafing capabilities. Allied medium bombers operating over NW Australia are mainly B-25C's and A-20G's with a few B-26's, all of these types having a relatively small bomb load. I have three B-25G/H squadrons positioned to begin launching strikes against Jap LCU's in Portland Roads and two squadrons recently arriving in Sydney now upgrading to B-25J's (these having a larger bomb capacity than the B-25C). Your point does make the case that the B-25C, A-20 and B-26 not being effective for low-level ground attack. Several changes and actions I can make as far as Allied air forces over NW Australia are concerned - (1) Increase mission altitiude for medium bombers on ground attack strikes, thinking 6,000 to 8,000 foot range to start. Pillager has withdrawn nearly all the flak LCU's that had been in Daly Waters so I'm seeing flak as less of a factor. Though your point on 100 feet as a attack altitude makes sense in that every Jap on the ground with a rifle or MG was getting in a shot at the bombers along with the remaining flak guns. (2) Upgrading B-25C squadrons to B-25J's. The B-25J has 50% greater bomb load than the "C" at normal range and twice the bomb load at extended range. This would mean temporarily pulling half of the medium bomber force at Tennant Creek out of service but worth it in the long run. (3) Shifting 4E bombers from airfield bombing missions against Darwin to ground attack bombing over Daly Waters as much as possible, though I may want to continue keeping Darwin airfield inoperative or marginally functioning. (4) Diverting P-38's to LRCAP over Daly Waters instead of sweep missions over Darwin. How many fighters Pillager operates on CAP over Darwin is of little consequence to the activity at Daly Waters. If Pillager sends Jap planes on LRCAP or ground attack missions over Daly Waters, then my P-38's can get them. If Jap fighters remain on CAP over Darwin, they will not be involved in air operations at Daly Waters. My ground offensive against Daly Waters with the forces I'm currently employing is intended less to capture this base (though I would certainly have no objection doing so) than to engage and tie down Jap LCU's in Daly Waters. Primary objective is "locking" Jap LCU's in place at Daly Waters and preventing Pillager from withdrawing them towards Darwin. The Japanese combat LCU's in Daly Waters represent most of the Jap ground combat forces available to Pillager in NW Australia. Pinning them down in Daly Waters can restrict or eliminate Pillager's ability to transfer these LCU to defend or garrison Darwin, Broome or other bases in Australia, or to evacuate them from NW Australia altogether. Of course, inflicting as much disruption and casualties to Jap LCU's stuck in Daly Waters is also a worthy endeavour.

Summary of Operations 1/10/44 North Pacific: Jap recon flight over Attu. Otherwise quiet. Plans for Operation Bulldog (Paramushiro and Kurile Is, Sakhalin) are being temporarily put on hold - LCU's and LBA already deployed in the North Pacific theatre area will remain in place. Decision is pending on the disposition of LCU's, aircraft and other assets currently enroute to the North Pacific, though my intent is to continue at least some of these movements, especially movements critical to continue preparations for the operation. This hold isn't expected to result in a significant delay as the execution of Operation Bulldog in its present scale is highly dependent on the use of reinforcements (especially U.S. division-size LCU's) available between now and the end of 3/44, with the last of these reinforcements due to arrive in the North Pacific area sometime in 4/44. In any event, current plans for Operation Bulldog include the assumption that any invasion of the Japanese northern areas could not feasibly be carried out before 4/44, due to (1) weather conditions in the North Pacific, and (2) the present shortage of available U.S. divisions. Of the 18 U.S. combat divisions presently in the game, only seven of these are now in the Pacific theatres AND also available for use in Operation Bulldog - two divisions already in the North Pacific area, two more currently enroute, the remaining three for now in the Central Pacific area. Ten U.S. divisions remain "frozen in place" in the Samoan Islands and pending resolution of that situation. One U.S. combat division (the 40th) is in NE Australia and participating in the Portland Roads operation. At this time, there is a brief window of possibly several weeks where no significant U.S. reinforcements projected for use in Operation Bulldog are arriving in the game and there is (temporarily) a reduced scale of shipping movements in progress to the North Pacific theatre. Over the next several weeks there is a small amount of time to review the following. (1) The overall feasibility of Operation Bulldog - either in its present "full" scale, on a reduced scale, or as a decoy operation if any actual execution of the operation does not prove to be feasible. (2) The seven U.S. combat divisions currently available (expected to be ten by 4/44) form the core of the "cutting edge" for U.S. invasions between now and the later part of 1944 (or at least until the U.S. divisions now in Samoa can be broken loose and again be available for action). Wherever and whatever operation these divisions are used for, it has to be effective. If Operation Bulldog is the best use of the available U.S. divisions, then they will be committed there. Otherwise... it needs to be determined where they can be better employed, move them there, and get them into action. What I'm focusing on as a possible alternative operation is sending everything south (instead of north) to Australia/NZ - then employing them either to (1) reinforce plans currently in progress for clearing the Japanese out of NW Australia and a possible advance northward through the central and eastern DEI towards the Philippines and/or (2) a proposed northward advance through the Solomons either with or without an assault on Noumea to turn the flank and break Pillager's "lock" on Samoa. Somehow... using the "cutting edge" of U.S. Pacific forces not engaged at Samoa in a separate operation that would effectively break the Japanese grip on Samoa more and more appears to be the better option. Breaking free the U.S. forces (including carriers) tied up in one way or another at Samoa and getting them moving again would in itself be a massive reinforcement and would have a considerable "snowball" effect on advancing the U.S. war effort. Summary of Operations 1/13/44 Admiral's Edition is out! I will have to get my copy and begin test driving it. I'll also test drive AE a little more throughly than I did with WitP before taking on a live opponent. I played the AI in WitP stock once through mid-1943 before taking on Pillager - had absolutely no experience with CHS, just installed and immediately began playing. Having seen a how a game system works at least once before going into a match vs a live opponent can be helpful in increasing the confidence level of your decisions and planning. Having this knowledge does provide a bit more insight into what the capabilities of both Allied and Japanese forces in the game really are - what things (ships, planes, etc) can and cannot do in different situations, how what you have can best be used, what your opponent can (or cannot) do with what he has, and so on. The same could also be said about trying out different types of operations vs the AI before attempting them against a live opponent - my amphibious operation on Pago Pago in this game being the first one I attempted in WitP against either the AI or a live opponent. If this were show business, I skipped all the rehearsals and went straight into opening night (do not pass GO, do not collect $200). Some of the end results did not surprise. Not developing a sufficient level of experience with the game before playing it is a disadvantage, a self-inflicted one. A word to the rookies... try out the frying pan before leaping into the fire. IIRC, you had several Australian bdes at Tennant Creek. These were units which I had suggested should also form part of the army sent to Daly Waters which would then be well over 1000 Ass Val, a force too strong to be pushed out of Daly Waters. It seems to me that you could use their tubes to counter the mass enemy artillery and their infantry to ensure the enemy has no chance of gaining 2:1 odds in a shock attack. Or have you decided to use those units elsewhere? Alfred

Alfred, I did have three "brigade-sized" infantry LCU's in Darwin, only one (23 Brigade AIF) was Australian. The other two LCU's are U.S. - the rebuilt 31 RCT and 4 Marine Rgt evacuated from the Philippines, both these units at full TOE strength. Australian 23 Brigade and U.S. 31 RCT have been committed to the Daly Waters operation, though neither of them are planned to go into Daly Waters itself unless necessary. 4 Marine Rgt remains in Tennant Creek - as of now holding it in reserve in case its needed at Daly Waters, my preference for this LCU is using it for other operations. Plans in NW Australia at this time include sending into Daly Waters hex an Allied ground force sufficient to tie down Japanese LCU's that are holding Daly Waters - strong enough to prevent Jap forces in Daly Waters from kicking them out with a shock or deliberate ground attack without sending everyone in. I am quite content with trading ground bombardment attacks in Daly Waters (even with the Japanese at a slight advantage), my main objective here is "freezing" the Japanese ground force at Daly Waters in place. Most of the artillery I plan to use against the Japs in Daly Waters will come from the air, especially as the Allies now largely control the skies over Daly Waters. Orders have already been issued to 23 Brigade and an Australian tank LCU outside Daly Waters to begin an outflanking movement to cut the rail line between Daly Waters and Darwin, possibly capture Katherine in a "best case" scenario. Known Jap LCU's in Daly Waters include Jap 2nd & 5th Divisions, plus 21 Mixed Brigade - these three LCU's comprising the main Japanese infantry strength in NW Australia. Most of the known Jap tank forces in NW Australia are also in Daly Waters. An encirclement of Daly Waters would isolate most if not nearly all the major Jap ground combat LCU's in NW Australia at Daly Waters - the Jap LCU force in Darwin is likely made up of mostly flak and base force LCU's. Part two... A force is being collected at Perth centered around 6th, 7th & 9th Australian Divisions plus other LCU's now enroute from other locations in Australia and also by sea from India (my preference for 4 Marine Rgt is using it in this operation if not required elsewhere). Much of the Royal Navy is also enroute to support this operation. Much of this preparation is well in progress though I don't anticipate having everything in place for some weeks. What is not totally clear at this time is exactly where this force is going to strike, two options are under consideration. In either case, the Jap base in Exmouth is being bypassed at least for now. The two options include (1) an invasion in NW Australia landing at Broome and possibly Darby and/or Wyndham. and (2) an invasion in the eastern DEI centered on Timor and as many smaller surrounding islands near Timor (with suitable bases for expanded airfields) as possible. The "Big Sweep" vs the little one. Plans for whichever of the two invasions is done include quickly getting airfields up and transferring (mostly by air) as much of the Allied air force at Tennant Creek as possible or feasible into them. I have a substantial Allied ground force (40th U.S. Division, one Australian division, four Australian Brigades, numerous tank and artillery LCU's) going into Portland Roads to eliminate the one significant Jap bridgehead in NE Australia. Cleaning the Japs out of Portland Roads will leave nearly all this force available for future employment elsewhere. One of the alternatives I'm considering to Operation Bulldog (North Pacific) is a large-scale reinforcement of operations in and from Australia using U.S. forces now in the Pacific, especially to follow-up any initial success in this area. For now Pago Pago is dragging and will drag on... each Allied transport sortie into Pago Pago is bringing that base a little closer to becoming permanantly operational. When that happens, this area will be swamped with Allied planes in very large numbers and very quickly. Even with Pago Pago base knocked out most of the time, I'm content for now with moving in and quietly setting up the infrastructure. At some point I'm gonna put a serious dent in Jap LBA air strength over Samoa, shooting up some KB planes maybe a nice bonus. My aim here is getting those ten U.S. divisions and other LCU's "unfrozen" and available to operate somewhere.
