quote:

I see three possible options for dealing with the fighter squadrons now on Pago Pago.

(1) Fly out undamaged fighter planes from Pago Pago (air transfer them to Penhryn) as they become repaired at Pago Pago base, re-assemble the squadrons at Penhryn as individual planes of the squadrons become operational on Pago Pago and can fly off from there. It could work. The only question I would have to this method is that some of the fighter squadrons now appear to have more pilots than planes.

(2) Transport them out by sea. Not my first choice. There's the (very high) risk of loading them onto an AK and then the AK sinking from a Jap air strike.

(3) Leave them on Pago Pago. Yes, the planes are free target practice for Jap LBA. However, with an Aviation Rgt and sufficient supply on Pago Pago and airfield facilities on Pago Pago operational, I do have a second force of U.S. fighter squadrons (now) available on Penhryn that can transfer onto Pago Pago by air and immediately begin CAP over the base. CAP over Pago Pago from this second group of fighter squadrons could provide cover for the squadrons now on Pago Pago as they repair planes and return to operational status. I'm currently leaning toward this option.

I would go with 1 and 2. With almost all having a their morale below 30, they will need R&R to get that up over at least 60 before they are truly combat effective. If the worse of choice #2 happens, then the fragment become the parent and you can rebuild the whole unit. Yes, you lose the experienced pilots, but it is better than losing the whole squadron if the whole squadron is sunk on board ship.

If you are bringing in supply by AKs, then break them up into 2 ship TF and load one or both ships with your damaged aircraft. Of course, this whole operation will be done at full speed. [;)]

Can you swap out either/or your DB/TB on your CVs for more fighters and LRCAP your transports to/from Pago Pago from a safe enough distance??

The Kwantung Army - Where is it now.

Pillager appears to have removed as many Kwantung Army LCU's as possible out of Manchuria and Korea while still maintaining the minimum 8000 assault points to keep the Russians at bay.

Japanese ground forces known to be currently occupying Manchuria and Korea include the following.

Seventeen Infantry divisions (1st, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 19th, 20th, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 28th, 30th, 57th & 71st).
3rd Cavalry Brigade
Three Artillery LCU's (4 Heavy FA Rgt, 8 Heavy Artillery Brigade, Tone Heavy Gun Rgt)
Four Flak LCU's.
Four Engineer Rgts (5th, 7th, 9th, 22nd) plus 23 Engineer Bn.
Twelve Construction Bns.
Seven IJN/IJNAF Base Force LCU's.
Four IJA Base Force LCU's.
Four Aviation Rgts.
Seven HQ LCU's (six Army HQ, one Air Division HQ).

Total estimated assault point value of these LCU (assuming full TOE strength) is near the 8000 minimum level.

If the estimated assault point total above is correct... Pillager has likely withdrawn as many LCU's from Manchuria and/or Korea to other theatres as he possibly could. Future Jap LCU reinforcements entering the game with the Kwantung Army would allow Pillager to make addtional LCU transfers (assuming he has the PP to do so) - but even these transfers would be no faster than the rate in which new Jap LCU reinforcements enter the Kwantung Army.

So where did they go? Pillager sent nearly all the major Jap division-size LCU's he transferred from the Kwantung Army to bases in the Pacific, with one division going to China. A roster of transferred Kwantung Army divisions follows. In addition, Pillager has transferred all tank LCU's plus large numbers of Artillery and Flak LCU's, Construction engineers, and Base Force LCU's from the Kwantung Army to virtually every theatre.

The following are identified Japanese divisions transferred out of the Kwantung Army along with current locations and dates detected in those locations.

29th Infantry Division - currently with Jap ground forces attacking at Tuyun.
Mongol Cavalry Division - Rabaul (11/26/43)
1st Mongolian Cavalry Division - Lunga (10/23/43)
2nd Mongolian Cavalry Division - Saipan (10/28/43)
3rd Mongolian Cavalry Division - Lunga (12/12/43)
4th Mongolian Cavalry Division - Wake (11/29/43)
5th Mongolian Cavalry Division - Port Moresby (11/4/43)
6th Mongolian Cavalry Division - Majuro (9/18/43)
7th Mongolian Cavalry Division - Ulithi (11/11/43)
8th Mongolian Cavalry Division - Tarawa (11/29/43)
9th Mongolian Cavalry Division - Noumea (7/30/43)

Conclusions:

All the divisions listed above have been transferred far to the south. Along with the known locations of the other mobile Japanese Infantry divisions (Guards on Sumatra; 4th/18th/21st/46th in Malaya & Southeast Asia; 16th in the Phillipines; 2nd & 5th at Daly Waters; 43rd on Saipan; 48th & 56th in the DEI, 31st/33rd/55th in Burma), this data indicates that Pillager may have few or no mobile Jap divisions locally in reserve in the northern theatres.

This might be a point in favor of an offensive into the Kuriles/Sakhalin. Speaking of which... while no final go or no-go decision on an offensive in this direction has been made, preparations are ongoing to allow the possibility of this offensive in a March-April '44 time frame. I'm looking at posts in this forum and AmiralLaurent's AAR and weighing things out. I intend to have further posts specifically addressing a Sakhalin/Kuriles operation and mentioned it here only because the LCU locations and movements I covered in this post may be or become relevent to a go or no-go decision.

wneumann -> RE: Summary of Operations 12/16/43 (6/3/2009 12:37:49 AM)

ny59giants,

Good points. I may try option (1) initially until such time as a good possiblity of safely transporting the remaining planes/pilots out by sea.

In one of my supply operations to Pago Pago I broke up my transports into small (1-2 ship) TF's. Unfortunately the horde of Jap LBA broke up into smaller naval air strikes and attacked all my small TF's concurrently. It appears to be a six-of-one, half-dozen-of-the-other choice, either way Jap LBA is going to get a shot at them. Appears to have no effect on surface naval combat as well - Pillager had the same Jap surface combat TF in a night action going through all the small U.S. transport TF's it could find (in the same hex) one at a time.

wneumann -> Summary of Operations 12/17/43 (6/4/2009 4:01:32 AM)

wneumann -> RE: Summary of Operations 12/18/43 (6/6/2009 10:05:42 PM)

NW Australia - Daly Waters, Darwin and beyond:

Plans and preparations are underway for several operations in this area - each of these operations also including a number of options. Activities that are now in progress include the following.

1) Two possible amphibious operations to outflank or bypass Japanese positions in NW Australia are being looked at.

(a) Kimberleys (Exmouth, Broome, Derby, Wyndham) This operation follows mainly along Alfred's line of thinking, and represents the "small sweep" around the bulk of Jap forces in NW Australia.

quote:

Alfred: Allied control of the 4 bases in the Kimberleys (Exmouth, Broome, Derby, Wyndham) allows for future offensive operations against Darwin/Aru Island, or Timor/Sulewesi axes. It outflanks the Japanese at Daly Waters by interdicting enemy SLOCs.

Advantages include exactly what Alfred stated. This is the closer and also appears to be the safer of the two alternate objectives for a planned amphibious operation in this general area. Detected airfield sizes at Broome and Wyndham also well suited to support Allied air ops. Jap LCU's and garrisons identified as being or having been in this area include the following.

Broome - 21 Special Base Force (there as of 11/26/42), no subsequent Sigint or other intel on this unit.

Derby - No known Japanese garrison, either detected through on-map status of the base or from archived Sigint intel.

Wyndham - 22 NLF & 3 Mortar Rgt (there as of 4/16/42), no subsequent Sigint or other intel on these units. Both these LCU's appear to be the initial Jap landing force that captured Wyndham.

While it cannot be accurately concluded that Jap LCU's occupy any of the three bases at the present time, there is a distinct possibility that one or more of the bases may be unoccupied. All three bases are not quickly accessible overland from either Darwin or Daly Waters which works both in favor (Jap LCU reinforcements reaching any of these bases) and against (Allied ground forces advancing towards Katherine from these bases) - however, on this last point I may be getting ahead of myself.

(b) Timor/Flores/Soemba area This operation is the "big sweep" solution and completely outflanks all Japanese positions in NW Australia. Detected sizes of two of the three bases on Timor (Koepang & Lautem, both size 4 airfields) are sufficient to immediately support Allied air operations. All three bases on Timor plus Maumere (on Flores) and Waingapu (on Soemba) can be built up to provide a mutually supporting network of Allied air bases.

In addition to completely outflanking NW Australia, Allied control of this area would allow the possibility of interdicting Japanese ship movements into/from Darwin by Allied air forces. These islands also serve as an initial Allied foothold in the DEI. In addition, Japanese-controlled oil and resource centers at Soerabaja, Balikpapan, Kendari, Amboina, Boela and Sorong would be within range of 4E (and in some cases 2E) bombers.

Bases on Timor are within air transfer range of many Allied bombers and longer-range fighters now based at Tennant Creek.

Per latest known intel, Japanese LCU garrisons on the three islands include.

Koepang (Timor) - 22 Independent Mixed Brigade, 17 Heavy FA Rgt, 11 IJA Aviation Rgt (all recent sightings)
Lautemi (Timor) - 23 NLF, 130 IJA Base Force, one Construction Bn (all recent sightings)
Dili (Timor) - unoccupied
Maumere (Flores) - unoccupied
Waingapu (Soemba) - unoccupied

Projected landing sites in this operation would be at Dili (main landing force) with secondary landings at Maumere and Waingapu. Follow-up landing forces with aviation support and construction LCU's plus as much supply as possible to all three islands would arrive as quickly behind the attack forces as possible. Additional landings by small LCU's at undefended outlying islands in the immediate vicinity of Timor/Flores/Soemba along with the main assault might be possible as small LCU and shipping for them in the amphibious landing TF's is available.

2) Priority for deployment of available British naval forces and transport shipping in India has been given to amphibious operations - either (1a) or (1b) above. A transport TF was dispatched and now enroute to Colombo to pick up 7th Australian AIF Division. U.S. Aviation Rgts surplus to requirements in the India/Southeast Asia theatre are being diverted for use as follow-up forces in either amphibious operation. Other transport TF's have also been formed and dispatched.

A large number of British AK's & AP's (mainly at Aden) are available for amphbious operations. These ships will form the core of transport TF's for Allied amphibous ops in this area. Some transport ships in Australia are available but many have previously been diverted into the Pacific.

The British surface fleet is forming at Colombo as the primary naval support for amphibous operations against either the Kimberleys or into the DEI. Only two small British carriers (one CVL, one CVE) is currently available for air support of an amphibious operation - three additional British CVE's enter the game as reinforcements in 90 days.

3) LCU's in Australia already allocated for amphibious operations include 6th & 9th Australian AIF Divisions, 3 & 13 Australian Brigades, 6 Australian Cavalry Brigade, and two Independent Cos. All these LCU's are already enroute to Perth. Additional LCU's in Australia projected for inclusion in amphibious ops may be drawn from units now at Tennant Creek, also many LCU's now involved in the Portland Roads operations (U.S. 40th Division, two Australian AIF Brigades, others).

4) The Jap base at Exmouth is slated to be bypassed during execution of either amphibious operation (1a) or (1b) above. Exmouth is projected to be taken in an follow-up amphibious operation using U.S. 40th Division and other Allied LCU's moving westward from the Portland Roads operation after its completion.

5) Allied ground offensive north from Tennant Creek...

quote:

Alfred: (B3) Australian Northern Territory

The unidentified Allied units located 1 hex to the NW and NE of Tennant Creek now serve no purpose because the enemy will not march south from Daly Waters. These units together with everything (except Gull Force) located at Tennant Creek, should immediately march north to invest Daly Waters. Doing so will result in an Allied Field Army (called I Aust Army) of approximately 1620 Ass Val. This army would be far too strong to (a) be pushed out of Daly Waters, (b) allow for rotation of individual units back to Tennant Creek for rebuilding, (c) inhibit the enemy from withdrawing Daly Waters units to bolster its defences elsewhere (eg the Kimberleys, Darwin, Aru etc), and (d) with the sizeable quantity of Allied artillery in this army, you will be able to wear down the enemy adjusted Ass Val by rotating your artillery bombardment amongst your units.

(i) immediately march north from Tennant Creek all units (except Gull Force and av sup needed to operate the air base) - no need to wait for all units to be 100% prepped for Daly Waters

An Allied ground offensive from Tennant Creek against Daly Waters is planned as a secondary operation in support of amphibious attack (1a) or (1b) above. Initially, the primary objective of the offensive on Daly Waters is engage, pin down the 27 detected Jap LCU's in Daly Waters and eliminate their ability to move - capture of Daly Waters base by Allied forces would not accomplish this as Jap LCU's now in Daly Waters would merely be pushed back by this action and they would still retain their freedom to maneuver. Eliminating the movement of Jap LCU's from Daly Waters would prevent any voluntary withdrawal of these units either to cover Darwin or evacuate them from NW Australia.

Allied combat LCU's now at Tennant Creek are 100% prepped for Daly Waters.

6) New Zealand LCU's...

quote:

Alfred: Allied garrisons ... can be obtained from the surplus 5 NZ bdes in Auckland and Christchurch. If these units arrive in Perth in time to join the AIF divs they can partake in the initial Exmouth landing, otherwise they provide a follow up reserve

NZ ground forces in excess of those needed to remain in New Zealand as garrisons will be collected - these units will either remain in NZ or moved to Australia as a follow-up reserve.

F-5A recon over Canton Is reports 10 aircraft, 15 Jap LCU's.

Pago Pago, Day 98 of the Fiasco: Weather forecast for Pago Pago is continued precipitation.

Landing operations on Pago Pago this game turn mostly successful. 55th Aviation Rgt fully disembarked on Pago Pago with no losses or disruption - this LCU very nicely boosted both the general and aviation support element levels at Pago Pago, the base is now at full support in both areas. Transports and LST's carrying 55 Aviation Rgt departed Pago Pago with no damage or losses.

Approx 13K supply was landed on Pago Pago, though these transports were heavily attacked by Jap LBA causing considerable loss of both ships and their supply cargo (originally 40K supply total).

Detected level of Jap base on Upolu - airfield damage 69 (as seen below, this airfield remained in action this game turn), 529 aircraft (168 fighters, 205 bombers), 18 Jap LCU's. Hopefully after today's carrier air attacks, Upolu airfield will not be operational next game turn.

AAR's of Jap LBA naval strikes against U.S. transports on Pago Pago follow.

You can now use the AF, but no repair of damaged aircraft will take place until the service damage comes down. How many fighters did you fly in to fly CAP and what percentage did you set them for??

wneumann -> RE: Summary of Operations 12/23/43 (6/14/2009 7:38:12 PM)

quote:

ny59giants: You can now use the AF, but no repair of damaged aircraft will take place until the service damage comes down. How many fighters did you fly in to fly CAP and what percentage did you set them for??

None as of this time. I'm going to see if I can get the airfield service damage down a little before I do that, otherwise any new fighters I send in could end up the same way the first group did.

Not to get too far ahead of myself (we're just finishing the 12/25 game turn), but my carrier planes have put the Jap airfield on Upolu out of action. My first priority at this time is being able to repair Pago Pago faster than the Japs can damage it. The fighters on Pago Pago would be a crucial addition to this effort. Part or all of the KB has left the Pago Pago area (CV Soryu was caught at Truk by a "synch bug" sub attack) - U.S. carriers could be free to play (at least for now) at Pago Pago. Of course, we're taking this one day at a time.

I'm watching this situation closely. I do have fighters available at Penhryn that can transfer into Pago Pago - planning to move them in as soon as I can see they will remain operational once they are based on Pago Pago. Getting the airfield service damage down is the main remaining obstacle to progress.

ny59giants -> RE: Summary of Operations 12/23/43 (6/14/2009 8:54:38 PM)

If you have between 100 and 150 operational Corsairs and Lightnings with an average experience in the mid-60s or better, you should be OK. I think you may have one or two turns to decide. Some bad weather (rain) would be very helpful right about now. [;)]

wneumann -> RE: Summary of Operations 12/23/43 (6/15/2009 4:13:05 AM)

Actually, I have approx 150 fighters immediately available (at Penhryn) for transfer into Pago Pago - P-38G's and Corsairs plus a squadron of F6F's. Experience levels of most of these squadrons average around 60 or so.

At some point later on, I'd like to get the 4E bombers on Penhryn off from doing supply airlifts and transfer them into Pago Pago behind the fighters to conduct a non-stop pounding of the Jap base on Upolu.

As it is (getting ahead of myself again)... My carrier bombers now have the Jap airfield on Upolu fully suppressed. They're still hitting the airfield on Upolu but doing it now to destroy as many planes on the ground as possible. Within the next game turn or two I'm gonna have to pull the carriers back to replenish - any Jap planes destroyed on the ground will also add to the time (and supply points) required for Pillager to get Upolu airfield back into operation. I'm expecting the Jap airfield on Upolu will get back up into operation - what I'm doing now is making the process as long and costly as possible. The more time and supply I can make my opponent chew up, the better my chances are of getting Pago Pago into full operation.

I'm looking at the possibility of shipping in another engineer unit or two onto Pago Pago to help speed up repairing airfield damage. As I said before, this project is one day at a time.

Those 150 fighters would have wiped out most of his planes and quickly increased the experience levels of your pilots. I have switched over to the "dark side" and pilots are the big issue for him, not planes. If your pulling back your CVs, then he can quickly re-close the base if you have nothing there to slow him down.

Pilots from two U.S. fighter squadrons on Pago Pago (squadrons on Pago Pago have pilots but no operational planes remaining) loaded aboard two of the less-damaged AK's for evacuation back to Penhryn. Several planes from each of the two squadrons had previously flown off Pago Pago to Penhryn - if the evacuated pilots reach Penhryn, they will re-combine with the elements of the two squadrons already on Penhryn, the squadrons then re-equip at Penhryn with new planes and replacement pilots, then rest and recover there before returning to action.

Several other U.S. squadrons remain on Pago Pago with pilots but no operational planes. These squadrons will be removed later from Pago Pago to rest and re-form on Penhryn in future sea transport ops as the situation permits.
