I'm noticing that Chinese LCU's in hex 48,31 have not been moving - this could be due to the fact these units basically have no available supply (supply at Nanyang base itself is nearly depleted), or that these units are under attack (in combat), or both? Summary of Operations 4/7/42: Central Pacific: Contact has been broken with all Japanese TF's previously W of Johnston Is - appeared to have withdrawn at least for the time being. U.S. carriers moving back to Pearl to replenish. Normal shipping between U.S. West Coast and Hawaii has fully resumed. South Pacific: Apparently some reinforcements succeeded in arriving for Japanese land forces on Suva - at least some of tht troops (51 Independent Mixed Brigade) carried by the two transport TF's intercepted by "Force Z and friends" managed to disembark on Suva before the ships they arrived on were attacked and sunk. Summary of Operations 4/8/42 (65 years ago today!) Central Pacific: Two Japanese TF's sighted SW of Midway. CV Hiryu spotted by naval search aircraft in one of these TF's. One of the TF's reported moving NW at relatively high speed, movement of the second TF is not known. Situation map follows. U.S. carrier TF's are undetected and located SE of Midway, moving on an ENE heading to bypass suspected Jap submarine activity around French Frigate Shoals. More Operations from 4/8/42 South Pacific: Sigint reports radio signals from an open sea hex just SW of Pago Pago - possible Japanese TF just departing Pago Pago likely enroute to Suva. "Force Z and friends" have turned around and now returning to the area around Suva to see what shows up. Australia: Japanese landings continue at Derby - Derby later captured by Japanese forces during ground combat phase. However, my "mystery" coast defense guns continued pounding away to the very end. AAR's follow. The damage inflicted by the "mystery" CD guns should have some impact on the Japanese ability to transport supplies and more troops into NW Australia. Given the number of damaged (and possibly sunk) AK and AP, Pillager could face the choice of (1) getting along with reduced transport capacity off NW Australia, or (2) bring additional AK and/or AP at the expense of operations elsewhere. Given the overall situation, it was not possible to place sufficient Allied forces (with adequate supply) to prevent the Japanese landings or capture of Broome and Derby. The most problematical aspect to the situation in NW Australia is Japanese control of the air, particularly in the waters between Timor and the NW Australian coast. This has completely shut down sea transport of supply, troops, aircraft to bases in NW Australia - forcing all movement into this area via overland. The major priority is the movement of sufficient air base units (without denuding other sectors) and fighter aircraft to challenge Japanese air power at least in the Darwin/Katherine area. This, of course, will have to be done considering the overall supply situation in NW Australia - which at this point is sufficient to support ground troops already in the area and possibly some aircraft but not enough to support any offensive operations. China: Japanese ground attacks continue along all parts of the Nanyang salient. Jap 14 Independent Brigade appeared in the front lines as reinforcement in the most recent attack on Nanyang itself. AAR's follow. Chinese LCU's in hex 48,31 do not appear to be moving (apparently due to lack of supply) - these units had been ordered for some time to leave hex 48,31 and move into Nanyang and have 50-55 miles movement in this direction, however movement of these units in the last two or three days has stopped. Japanese efforts appear to be increasingly concentrated on Nanyang itself in order to capture Nanyang and cut off Chinese LCU in 48,31. With losses that have been taken to date by Chinese units in 48,31 it may be to my advantage that the Japanese cut them off and wipe them out (though I will be trying to avoid this). Several things to note on this. 1) Once they are destroyed, the Chinese LCU in hex 48.31 will re-appear in Chungking in 30 days or so as reinforcements, apparently at no expense to the Chinese ground army replacement pool. This does two things - first, it gets the units out of the "pocket" and second, there appears to be no replacement cost to get these units back in the game at full strength (or something resembling it). 2) The waste of Japanese time and effort to destroy the Chinese LCU in 48,31. Not to mention the Jap casulties in the process. However, this at the "nominal" cost of giving the Japs some VP they will likely get anyway. Stalin would have loved this plan. Summary of Operations 4/10/42 Central Pacific: Not a good day for U.S. ships out there... U.S. submarine Grampus patrolling at Marcus Is found the Japanese have laid a defensive minefield around the base there, the Grampus hit one of the mines taking moderate damage. The Grampus is heading back to Pearl Harbor and expected to return. CA Portland and 3 DD ran into two Japanese subs (I-7 and I-8) west of San Francisco - Portland and one of the DD's were torpedoed. Portland received substantial damage (35 system, 35 flood), the DD very heavily damaged and likely to sink. The Portland is returning to San Francisco for repairs and should make it. Both Japanese subs were attacked, the I-7 hit multiple times, the I-8 escaped unscathed. Summary of Operations 4/13/42 Most sectors relatively quiet. Central Pacific: Convoys with U.S. reinforcements originally intended for the South Pacific theater and diverted to Central Pacific continue to arrive and disembark in Hawaii. This redeployment concentrates numerous LCU's including five divisions in Hawaii, along with many aircraft. CA Portland torpedoed off the U.S. West Coast on 4/10 arrived in San Francisco to undergo repairs. Damage levels on the Portland are in the 30's (system and floatation), no fires. The Portland had completed the 4/42 upgrade and was enroute to Hawaii to join the carrier fleet when it was attacked. DEI: Japanese ground units attacking Teloekbetoeng and Padang to eliminate isolated Allied bases on Sumatra. About time! Would have been nice to just walk back in there, but not to be. Japanese landing on Manokwari (western New Guinea) - another mop-up operation. Burma: Japanese LCU (probably infantry div) now facing two Chinese divisions at Lashio - no combat as of yet.

SOME NOTES ON THE "BIG PICTURE"... Status of HQ South Pacific and South Pacific command: Given the arrival of HQ South Pacific in Auckland as a reinforcement in 10 days, some consideration is being made as to where and how HQ South Pacific and the South Pacific command in general is to be employed. Some factors being looked at include... a) Shipping route between the U.S. and Australia/NZ With Japanese conquests in the South Pacific (Canton, Pago Pago, Tonga, Suva to date), the shipping route between the U.S. and Australia/NZ has become very precarious. This route is and will remain highly vulnerable to Japanese interdiction. In addition, the distance and amount of time required for ships to travel via Panama City and westward along the southern map edge is excessively long. While I now have a small amount of shipping moving again along this route, my general thought on shipping via this route remains "the less, the better'. Individual ships are feasible, large convoys are not. b) Conditions related to the shipping route from the U.S. to Australia/NZ make it more feasible to move HQ South Pacific closer to its reinforcements (from the U.S.). The possibility exists also that some aircraft and base LCU�s in Australia or NZ assigned to South Pacific not essential to defense of Australia or NZ be removed from there for re-deployment. c) Extent of Japanese conquests in the South Pacific. This will make for some strange island hopping come '43 and '44. Any offensive operations from NZ or Australia are likely to be a frontal assault with little effective possibility of bypassing the "front line" cordon of Japanese bases that will face Australia and New Zealand to the N and NE. What is in order here is a re-alignment of Allied theater boundaries, not to mention implications on Allied strategy starting in late '42 and beyond. 1) Relocate HQ South Pacific to Hawaii and eventually somewhere in the Line Islands (Palmyra or Christmas Is). This will in effect place South and Central Pacific commands "side by side" which is where my short to intermediate-term strategic plans are leaning. * This places HQ South Pacific close to the majority of forces under its command, especially reinforcements arriving from the U.S. * With the very large mass of U.S. forces forming behind the line Midway-Johnston-Line Islands, a second HQ is needed here in addition to HQ Central Pacific. 2) What this does is place Central and South Pacific theaters "side by side". * The entire U.S. fleet is readily available to either of these commands, with a mininum of time and distance required to transfer ships and TF's between the two theaters. * Air and ground unit assets under either command that are within range can support operations by the other. 3) Most reinforcements from the U.S. earmarked for SW Pacific will instead move into the South Pacific command area at least for the short term. 4) HQ 5th Air Force and its support LCU will operate under South Pacific (instead of SW Pacific), similar to 7th Air Force operating with Central Pacific. 5) This re-alignment considerably accelerates the Allied build up process. More shipping is available to either command (Central or South Pacific) and can easily be reallocated from one to the other. Both theaters will have the advantage of common "interior lines". 6) The re-deployed South Pacific theater will face the flank of Japanese conquests in the South Pacific rather than attacking it frontally. My intent as of now is to bypass many of the major bases Pillager captured or will capture in the South Pacific (Pago Pago, Suva, possibly Noumea) to the north - this of course subject to future events or lack thereof.

Now for some remarks on U.S. Carriers I have been looking at some things that will come up in mid to late �42 that will influence any timing of carrier operations vs the KB (or at least the ones I initiate). 1) Availability of the TBF Avenger starting 6/42 � replace the TBD�s. American torpedoes may still be duds �till 1943, but at least there�s a suitable platform for launching them. 2) Availability of 1000 lb AP bombs starting 8/42 � bigger holes punched in KB flight decks. Self explanatory. 3) Completion of 4/42 and 10/42 upgrades � at least on the carriers themselves. 4) Arrival of Essex class CV�s � the closer to this date I get before starting active carrier ops, the better. Looks like Pillager can sail the KB around for a while (wasting precious fuel). Especially if he can manage to lose some of his pilots in the meantime.

I may be reading tea leaves here, but... One possible indicator of Pillager�s offensive pursuits (rightly or wrongly) could be taken from the location and employment of Japanese divisions available outside China and the home islands. Let's take a quick inventory. As of now (and as best as I can tell), the following Japanese divisions are available to Pillager for use outside of China and the home islands includes � Guards, 2, 4, 5, 16, 18, 21, 31, 33, 38, 48, 55, and 56. So where are they now? a) 2, 4, 5 Divisions are in NW Australia, soon to be followed by 18 Div. Pillager has firmly committed these divisions. b) 56 Division is in the Philippines. This division can go elsewhere after the end of operations in the Philippines. c) 31, 33, and 55 Divisions are in Burma. These aren�t going anywhere (other than India or elsewhere in Southeast Asia). d) What�s left� Guards (last seen in west Sumatra), 16, 21, 38, 48 divisions are still �at large�. Pillager can still employ these most anywhere if he has not done so already. I could imagine one or two of Pillager's "spare divisions" garrisoning major bases or focal points (such as Singapore, Java, Manila, Rabaul, Truk, etc). The view I'm taking is that where Pillager commits his divisions and how many of them is a rough indicator of his strategic �focus�, the number of uncommitted divisions he has available roughly indicating his capability to engage in future major offensive operations where he has a "territorial" objective. With the five uncommitted divisions he still has available (six counting 56 Div now in the Philippines) less any he uses for garrison duties, Pillager has by no means exhausted his offensive options. Once Pillager finishes committing all his divisions, that will probably mark the end of the main Japanese "land acquisition" process. A trend that could become more or more true from this point in the war... Japanese divisions that Pillager commits to various theaters will become more and more likely to permanently remain where he puts them. This is true especially for divisions he now has in NW Australia and Burma.

From the Allied viewpoint, Darwin is not usable as a base for any kind of operations and has not been since the Japanese capture of Timor and basing of Jap LBA there. The presence of Jap LBA on Timor (Betty bombers @ Koepang) completely stopped the flow of (non-suicidal) Allied shipping into NW Australia - this development made it very difficult to adequately supply Allied forces in the Darwin area, and completely impossible to deliver supply to other bases in NW Australia (Broome, Derby & Wyndham). Supply and fuel point stocks at all of these bases have been very low (barely enough for Allied LCU's @ Darwin and Katherine, totally insufficient to support any Allied forces in the other bases). At this point, the main value of Darwin to the Allies is to deny it to the Japanese for as long as possible without any Allied ground forces becoming trapped there by a Jap outflanking move from Wyndham. Assessing the situation in NW Australia... The fall of Darwin is a certainty within the next several weeks (of game time). The Japanese will pose a very serious threat to Katherine sometime thereafter, once Pillager captures Darwin and gets enough Japanese LCU's and supply into there to begin a move southward. However, opinion within the Allied command indicates that Katherine can be held although with some difficulty. Japanese control of Darwin will give Pillager a useful base (port = 3, airfield = 5) to maintain his forces in NW Australia. Balance of forces in NW Australia over the short term probably looks like this - Japanese: Ground forces include 2,4,5 (and soon also 18) Infantry Divs; 21 Mixed Brigade, 3 & 22 NLF; 3 & 5 Mortar Bns, 2 Tank Rgt, and other LCU's (air or naval base force units). Some Jap aircraft (Zeroes and bombers) now based in Broome. Allied: Ground forces include 3 & 4 Australian Divs, 23 Australian Brigade, Sparrow & Gull Force Bns, elements of U.S. 31 RCT (about 20-25% strength, evacuated from Bataan), 4 Marine Rgt (50% strength), several Australian company-size infantry LCU's, a small tank unit, remnants of Dutch Makassar (inf) Bn, HQ ANZAC Command, and several air and naval base force units. Most of these are located in or near Darwin or Katherine. Aircraft include one fighter squadron (16 Kittyhawk I) based at Katherine. The supply situation in NW Australia for the Allies could actually improve as they are pushed back toward Katherine - Katherine being the only base in NW Australia with supply adequate to support a large Allied force. It is likely that the Japanese supply situation in NW Australia will be difficult for some time to come, especially considering the amount of ground forces Pillager already has landed in Australia. My own supply difficulties at Broome, Derby, and Wyndham before these bases fell may have become a small (however temporary) advantage to the Allies as practically no Allied supply points (if any at all) fell into Japanese hands when the bases were captured. This is requiring Pillager to ship in every last supply point he needs to maintain forces already on the ground in NW Australia, let alone supply for Japanese offensive operations. There is a very good chance of the Japanese advance into Australia grinding to a halt due (at least partially) to its own supply difficulties. Reinforcement of Allied forces in NW Australia is going to be rather tricky. The trick is to do this without weakening other sectors in Australia (east and south) to the point where they become highly vulnerable to Japanese attack. Two Australian brigades (22 & 27) evacuated from Singapore are rebuilding in Melbourne - both these units are rebuilding well and could be moved into the NW along with possibly other small combat LCU from various locations in SE Australia. Another division could be moved in NW Australia as well, though the availablilty of this division depends on the arrival of 6 Australian Division now enroute from India (estimated to arrive at Perth in 14-15 days of game time). Question for any readers: Is there anything in the game mechanics where an air or land unit located in the U.S. can be transferred to Southeast Asia (i.e. appearing in Karachi or Aden) without having to load them on a transport ship and move them by sea across the Pacific to Australia and from there across the Indian Ocean? What I'm specifically looking at is doing this with some 4E bomber air units (if anything like this is at all possible).

I have been taking an inventory of a large number of ships anchored at various ports in southern and eastern Australia - plans are underway to remove non-essential ships from Australia and move them either to India or the U.S. Particular attention is being paid to ships that are not likely to be used in operations from Australia (AO's with nothing to replenish; AP's not needed for LCU movements; extra AS, AR, AVD; and so on). Many of these ships successfully evacuated the DEI, Malaya, or the Philippines earlier. You have to transport air units by ship, that the only way. When you change a west coast units command to Southeast Asia, in 30 days it appears in Karachi. Thus in answer to your question Land units do automatically move, air units do not. Hope this helps.

Stldiver, thanks for the info. I wasn't looking at moving any LCU's over there from the U.S. but still a good thing to "file for future reference". I did check my air unit reinforcements and there are some U.S. bomber units that do enter the game in Aden so I may wait for them given the present circumstances. A bit too risky transporting aircraft from the U.S. to India by sea, shipping routes on both legs of the journey (U.S. to Australia, Australia to India) are quite long and easily subject to Japanese CV attack.

Summary of Operations 4/21 & 4/22/42 Central Pacific: Japanese sub activity between Hawaii and U.S. West Coast. Jap submarine I-7 attacked by ASW task force 600 mi W of San Francisco on 4/22 and confirmed sunk. This TF is moving toward a second Jap sub contact (I-172) to the NW of its current location - TF will reach position of the I-172's sighting in two days sailing time. My ASW doctrine is basically to move ASW TF against known Japanese sub contacts - engage, attack and, damage or sink enemy subs to the greatest extent possible. This is the most effective use of ASW escorts, especially given the number of escort ships available and the quantity of transport shipping that's moving about. There's nowhere near enough Allied escort ships available to directly attach them to all moving Transport TF and effectively cover them against Jap sub attack. Jap submarine RO-62 was located and attacked by ASW task force N of Johnston Is on 4/21 - three hits reported. The RO-62 was sighted moving NW of Johnston on 4/22 by several naval patrol aircraft. U.S. submarine Trigger at Kwajalein continues reporting contact with Val aircraft patrolling this area - this exerpt from the 4/22 Operations Report. D3A2 Val attacking Trigger at 81,84 South Pacific: All sectors quiet - no Japanese activity detected. One contact at Pago Pago between U.S. submarines and Val air patrol on 4/21, no contacts on 4/22. It is possible that Jap carrier TF are now or will shortly be moving southward from Pago Pago to patrol the sea area along the southern map edge to locate and attack Allied shipping moving between Panama City (via the ship lanes) and Australia/New Zealand. At this time there are no Allied ships along the southern map edge in the areas where Japanese carrier patrols are expected to go. Allied transport shipping between Panama City and Australia/New Zealand via off-map ship channels and the southern map edge has been intermittant and in the form of widely dispersed 1-2 ship TF's. Three small tanker TFs carrying fuel cargo are now approaching New Zealand (all now located well to the west of the expected Jap patrol area). What shipping movement I do have moving along this route is scattered and intermittant enough where Pillager may get an occasional individual ship but not a terribly big reward for his effort. As far as I'm concerned, the KB can burn all the fuel and spend all the time it wants patrolling mostly empty seas - Pillager will just be adding more demands on what is likely already strained Jap logistics. Australia: This item on the 4/22 Sigint Report should be a clue of Japanese coming attractions in this theatre of war. 5th Engineer Battalion is planning for an attack on Darwin (along with another Jap division or two, especially since Pillager almost has to know from the volume of Jap recon and air strikes on Darwin there is at least a full division awaiting his expected arrival) Burma: This not confirmed, but appears that the Japanese 33rd Division at Lashio has divided. India: Continuing to pour in troops, aircraft, supply, fuel, and whatever from Aden as fast as it enters the game. Some shipping from Aden is moving across to Perth - carrying supply and fuel, also Australian 6 Division is enroute. China: The saga of Hex 48,31 continues - Chinese LCU are completely run out of supply and soon to run out of time (though they rise from the dead 30 days after elimination which is the bright side of this equation). If it wasn't for the fact the Jap LCU are gaining combat experience, this would be a perfectly good waste of Japanese supply, time, and effort. Maybe it will actually turn out to be a waste when all is said and done. Summary of Operations 4/23 - 4/24/42 Most sectors quiet - little significant Japanese activity detected. Both Pillager and I are busy rearranging the deck chairs. Central Pacific: Reports continue from U.S. submarines of Val air patrols at Kwajalein and Saipan - Jap fleet carrier(s) still likely at both these bases. South Pacific: No further report of Val aircraft sightings from U.S. sub patrol at Pago Pago, indicating Jap carriers may have departed Pago Pago since the last sighting on 4/21. Australia: Japanese naval bombardment of Darwin by TF including BB Nagato & Mutsu and CA Nachi - base facilities at Darwin taking some damage, heaviest effects of the bombardment was casualties to LCU at Darwin. At this point the more damage the Japs inflict on base facilities in Darwin the better - Darwin as a naval or air base is not useable by Allied forces to a large extent, damage to the base has little effect on Allied defenders but reduces its usefulness to the Japs (at least in the short term). Question for any readers... I have the CVE Long Island (with no aircraft on board) in the game and (if possible) would like to use this ship to ferry LBA between the U.S. West Coast and other bases. 1) How do you get air groups onto the Long Island? 2) What type(s) of aircraft will the Long Island carry? Restrictions? 3) Can you fly aircraft off the Long Island to a friendly airfield (on land) as a "one way" transfer mission once the Long Island moves within transfer range of the aircraft it is carrying? 4) Any other relevant or useful details.

I "think" that some LBA can be loaded on in port. 2) I beleive it is carrier capable only. 3) Many players use these feature to avoid getting LI into possible range of other LBA. 4) [&:][&:]
