Hm, I didn't realize until I looked it up that the Gatling gun was invented in 1861 and patented in 1862. I've mainly heard of it in use by the British against the Zulus.

I believe that Benjamin Butler (USA) was the first general officer to use the gun in combat at the siege of Petersburg. The Confederates also became interested in the machine gun. One of these warriors was Captain D. R. Williams who built a rather clumsy repeating one-pounder that was first used at the Battle of Seven Pines (or Fair Oaks). Several batteries of these guns saw service during the war. A few other primitive rapid-fire guns were used by the Confederates in isolated instances. One of them was the forerunner to the famous Lewis machine gun of the First World War.

The first machine-gun type weapon ever used in combat was built for the Confederate War Dept in Sept 1861 in which I discuss in my post above. The Williams breech-loading rapid-fire gun was first used at the Battle of Seven Pines and worked so well that the War Dept ordered 42 more of them. Another interesting weapon is the .52 caliber Billinghurst-Requa. As many as 50 of the breech-loading Billinghurst-Requa batteries were produced for the Union.
