By the way, for those wondering why I haven't posted any new bios recently: I was offline for much of the weekend, but did manage to make a big push and get through at least 20 bios. I need to look some things up -- first names of generals, dates of battles, etc. -- before I post them, but will do so soon. It looks like we may well have more than 150 bios in the patch, which is excellent.

850 generals on the wall ... 850 generals on the wall ... take one down ... pass it around ... 849 generals on the wall ...

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (yes, it's time) (finally) (7/10/2007 7:58:56 AM)

Huh. I just checked, and found that this project was first proposed back on August 4, 2006. Looks like our first anniversary is not too far away. We'll have at least 200 all done by then, with most of the more difficult/lengthy bios behind us.

wzh55 -> RE: Generals Bios Project (8/6/2007 7:54:22 PM)

Gil,

Any more generals need their bio done? I'm not partial now, I'll even do another Union man.

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (8/7/2007 3:26:17 AM)

One of the more pressing needs for a big-name general's bio is Pope. Any interest in him? If so, be sure to check out the earlier discussion in this thread: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1345045
(As you'll see, someone wrote a bio that was too short, and never expanded it. Battleline added a ton of useful info, though I don't think he meant it to be a bio proper.)

wzh55 -> RE: Generals Bios Project (8/7/2007 5:36:45 AM)

I will do Mr. Pope under great duress, but I will do him. (after all, he is a Yankee) My pleasure to assist.

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (8/7/2007 6:14:04 AM)

Great, thanks.

I'll let you do a Confederate next time.

wzh55 -> RE: Generals Bios Project (8/12/2007 9:10:09 AM)

Gil,

Any more generals need to have a bio? I figure the more I do, the better I get. Also, is the "problem" with forts being destroyed every time instead of captured with a successful siege going to be addressed in the upcoming patch? Wrong thread I know, just thought I would ask.

Thanks.

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (8/12/2007 10:44:13 AM)

I'm not sure where the forts business stands at the moment -- that's an Eric thing.

As for generals, the ones who are still needed because they appear in the scenario OOB's are: T.A. Davies, Ormsby M. Mitchel, W.F. Smith, Henry Halleck, Charles P. Stone, J.A. Dix, M. Lovell. If none of them is of interest I can check the main list.

wzh55 -> RE: Generals Bios Project (8/12/2007 11:04:46 PM)

Gill, put me down for Mr. Charles Pomeroy Stone, another Yankee, they're starting to grow on me.

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (8/12/2007 11:18:59 PM)

It's official -- Stone's yours.

wzh55 -> RE: Generals Bios Project (8/26/2007 7:34:20 PM)

Gil,
I noticed in another post that one of the generals yet to be done was Gregg, and I was hoping to volunteer, if he is still available. My question is, which Gregg is it? After a little prelim work, I foind at least 4, maybe 5 generals from both sides named Gregg, including "Long John" Ivring Gregg, Maxcy Gregg, another John Gregg on CSA side, and David McMurtie Gregg, Union Cavalry General. Some were only brevet generals I realize, but just would like to make sure. Thanks.

D.M. Gregg is the one I had in mind. We've got Maxcy already (though not the less important John).

Gil,
D.M. Gregg it is then. Hope to have him done to your satisfaction soon. Thanks.

Okay, you're down for him. Thanks.

wzh55 -> RE: Generals Bios Project (10/6/2007 1:55:37 AM)

Gil,

If still open, I would like to do John Turchin as my next general bio attempt.

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (10/6/2007 2:18:02 AM)

He's yers, then.

jeffk3510 -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/3/2007 11:23:37 PM)

Hi,
I was just curious if we need to verify with you if we write a bio?  Also, is there a list left of generals that are needing bios?  Has Nathan Kimball's bio been written?

Thanks

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/3/2007 11:58:37 PM)

I believe that Kimball is still out there, since a keyword search of this forum turns up nothing. I can't check my master file, since suddenly Excel has gone corrupt on me and I need to figure out where my installation disks are.

You should always check with me, since I alone have the list of which generals have already been assigned (even if I can't open it right now). Anyone else of interest to you?

jeffk3510 -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/4/2007 4:37:12 AM)

Sure, with finals being over next week, I would have a lot of time to do a handful.

Jeff

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/5/2007 8:27:40 AM)

I haven't been able to check yet on Kimball -- I'm now downloading Open Office so that I can deal with .xls files that way, in fact -- but am wondering who else might be of interest to you.

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/5/2007 9:00:47 AM)

Okay, Open Office works perfectly, so I was able to check and see that Kimball is indeed yours. I take it that you've read the various guidelines and pointers (e.g., don't exceed 3900 characters maximum, stick to the same format used for other bios, etc.)?

jeffk3510 -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/5/2007 9:04:58 AM)

Yes, I have read all of that, and understand it all.  I will be able to do Kimball shortly if not now.  I can do whoever you would like.  I will not be able to do the more well-known generals at the moment that are still left, because I have finals up until Tuesday.  Once those are over, I have all of break aside from work.

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/5/2007 9:26:18 AM)

Well, start with Kimball for now, and I'll try to come up with more names. Any preferences in terms of Union vs. Confederacy? (Note that Battleline has done about half of the Confederates already.)

Jonah -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/24/2007 7:02:15 PM)

Any more you need?

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/24/2007 9:43:51 PM)

Sure, there are lots more, though no particular name jumps out at me. Perhaps the thing for you to do would be to look at the commanders.txt file in the Data folder (using Excel is best) and see which generals who don't have bios might be of interest. Then run the name(s) past me and I'll check to see if anyone has already been assigned the general(s).

Jonah -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/25/2007 3:30:47 AM)

Wait, Where would I find the Commanders text file?

Jonah -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/25/2007 3:31:23 AM)

Or should I say, where is the data folder located on this site?

Gil R. -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/25/2007 3:52:23 AM)

In the main FOF folder one of the sub-folders is called "Data," and that's the one that has commanders.txt.

Jonah -> RE: Generals Bios Project (12/27/2007 4:57:38 AM)

Wait, FOF folder that comes with the game you mean? Or can it be opened through the site? Sorry, I just can't find it.
