You mean it's 1%??  I always thought it was 5%.  *Smacks self*

Mike Solli -> RE: how do you beat the CD gun/minefield combo? (1/25/2007 11:24:20 PM)

You're right, Tadpub.  It's 1% per day for a port and 5% per day for a shallow hex.

Mike Solli -> RE: how do you beat the CD gun/minefield combo? (1/25/2007 11:27:07 PM)

At 1% per day, it's over 600 days to get from 5000 to under 50.

Now that the self abuse is over, yes Virginia, it's 1% at a friendly base with at least a lvl 1 port; any other shallow water is the 5% degradation rate, like when you lay a field on someone elses doorstep.

Regarding the main question of the thread; if using this particular mod, I would bypass the base, and come back to it 2 months down the road; though, as I seem to recall, you are having problems covering your shipping in this version.....so, I guess I don't know what I would do here. Sorry Wobs.

Actually it isnt hard at all, if you have patience. You have to perform several steps:

1) Neutralize the CD guns. How? Air bombardment of port.

2) Continue to neutralize the CD guns with step 1 and use a BB bombardment (turn escorts fire off) force

3) Sweep mines continuing steps 1 and 2 while doing so

4) after mines are swept, land the troops

This process can take a week or more depending on the numbers of shore guns / mines. But it is reasonably safe as long as you have air surpremacy.

The air supremacy is probably key. The only place the US invaded without air supremacy was Guadalcanal, and that was--ah--educational. The air supremacy also means the minefields wither away.

See his original post - in this mod, airpower is sorta nerfed - and damaging the CD units by air is problematic.

It looks like he's playing 159. I play it, too, because it's more realistic than the stock game. The CDs are also more realistic than you think--that was one of the reasons we didn't go into Rabaul or Truk--and they were hard to take out with air.

you can also make a super MSW force with few capitals in surface combat TF / CD will not shoot at them / and attach as many dms as you have -you will be amazed how many mines are cleared

I've heard that the DMs were intended as offensive or antisubmarine minelayers. The DMSs were intended to work with the fleet, clearing mines to protect the battleships. Thus a bombardment TF with DMSs is quite realistic.

The bird-class MSWs the USN has at the start were converted to ocean-going tugs in 1942.

I just invaded Saipan and didn't lose a single AP to CD's. Putting the old BB's and some CA's on close support (i.e. within the invasion TF(s) really made the difference.

Too bad the initial assault stalled at Fort level 2. MUST BE THE GAME'S FAULT!!!!! MY STRATEGY WAS FLAWLESSS.....CURSE U RROBERSON......COME OUT WITH YOUR CARRIERS AND DIE LIKE A MAN.

Check out this for a CD/Minefield combo. Actually fairly happy though since i've lost 30 x MSW, 15 x LCI/LST BUT my troops are ashore and in good condition:

Yamato hugger -> RE: how do you beat the CD gun/minefield combo? (1/30/2007 11:35:53 PM)

Dont think your MSWs sweep any mines while they are playing catch with the shore guns.

Wow, LCI-66 gets "most effective minesweeper in the fleet award!" .. MSW usually only sweep 1-2 per turn, but this vessel got 17 in one phase!!!
[:D]

I guess if someone puts enough CD units in one place (like piling up 10 units worth) and this is detected ... then I'd either (a) Go somewhere else ... or (b) Hit the place with several days worth of 400+ Uber 4eB to wipe out all the supply .. that should reduce the gunfire sufficiently to let the MSW do their thing. But like in Speedy's case ... the "gunfire" looks like mostly small caliber ... the MSWs taking 150 hits and not sinking indicate the CD guns can't be firing much more than bee-bees ...

Speedysteve -> RE: how do you beat the CD gun/minefield combo? (1/31/2007 12:27:30 AM)

I'm not concerned by this though (obviously losing ships isn't great but) Saipan will fall since my 13 divisions are at 90% operational status due to the MSW/transport sacrifice[:)]

Yes.....so far he's only come out to attempting to snipe my lines of comm between Saipan (which finally fell after an epic 30day campaign) and Ewin. I can say with authority that he now only possesses two battleships and neither of them are Yamato class. [:)]

Ron Saueracker -> RE: how do you beat the CD gun/minefield combo? (1/31/2007 8:58:50 AM)

Oh Gee...do I have to be the guy that says perhaps the designers got it wrong again? I hate being such a non-team-player.. I'm already a whipping boy so I guess another op won't matter. Anyone who thinks adding vannila custard to alleviate the pain of popping zits which many of the games flaws feels like is NOT helping the issue, but only perpetuating it. A simple coding fix is needed here, along with about two dozen other things. No silly tried and and true work around or ass kiss approach helps. Hmmm...maybe I'll try to flaunt a highly plugged unofficial mod?

Bliztk -> RE: how do you beat the CD gun/minefield combo? (1/31/2007 10:03:03 AM)

What`s the problem here ?

In real war Saipan was bombed daily from February to June by Air.

Five days of air attacks and three of Naval Bombardment before landing the invasion.

You need to soften Japanese defenses a lot before landing..... [:-]

ok but at what speed you can efficiently sweep mines? 20+ knots ? never heard about of this
in witp it is always done at high speed
any japanese players saw a lot of night bombardment runs of multiple capitals covered by even single dms
in 5k+ dense minefields
for me it is a way too effective
dms make high speed runs through dense minefields totally safe for a TF
i don't even comment when there is surface action in enemy minefields
or the fact that dms within SC TF can clear minefield and sweeping is ignored by any CD guns
no matter a base have a radar or not
little to comment IMO

Five days of air attacks and three of Naval Bombardment before landing the invasion.

You need to soften Japanese defenses a lot before landing..... [:-]

At what point did I say I have a problem with it????[8|]

Might have been part of why i stalled. Might also have been part bad luck too. I don't think i did anything radically different from when i played against the AI and managed to get some good odds rolls. I probably didn't bring enough arty though which may have made the difference in only getting 1:1 odds initially...enough to reduce fort levels, but wearing down my troops in the process until a stalemate was reached at around fort level 2. The good part of my planning, as mentioned was putting in my old BB's and some CA's in close support which prevented the CD's from causing any serious harm. The bad part was then getting careless after things stalled which, combined with some judicious weather rolls allowed Der Roberson (aka, Die Spoiler) to slip in his BB fleet to cause some higgidy piggidy.

All in all a terrific fight. I need to work on improving my amphib ops though.
