It's certainly turning interesting with Pakistan out and India on the verge of going too... As over 1 bn (yes, billion) fans will probably now switch off the advertising revenues for News Corp International and Disney will plunge.

Apparently some of the promoters are going to go broke due to the massive numbers of cancellations from Indian and Pakistani fans.

Still...on a brighter note...two dangerous teams are out and Australia belted South Africa. [:D] You see, it's not all bad. [:'(]

Cheers, Neilster

I'm happy that England will be facing Sri Lanka and Ireland rather than India and Pakistan!

Only that they should be easier to beat. Of course, that might not prove to be the case when Fletcher says things like, "we think we now know the best side for certain conditions". Think? Certain conditions? The other seven teams will be quaking.

Of course, you can just read stuff onlne. The Grauniad has a very good weekly cricket news letter that can be emailed to you. Go here http://sport.guardian.co.uk/thespin to subscribe (or not).

..thinks ( soooo refreshing these colonials) ...

Neilster -> RE: Ireland (3/29/2007 5:33:34 AM)

Sri Lanka nearly pulled it out of the fire against South Africa with "The Slinger" Malinga's 4 wickets in 4 balls effort.

The West Indies never looked likely to chase Australia's 322, especially after a slow start and then losing quick wickets. I doubt having a day to think about the magnitude of the task would have helped though.

It'll be interesting to see how New Zealand go against them. Both are dangerous teams. For England's sake I hope Freddy and co. don't get on the turps too hard on Thursday night, because they wouldn't want to stumble against Ireland (the sleeping giant of world cricket [>:] [:'(]).

In what may be a major breakthrough, Jamaican police investigating the
murder of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer at the World Cup have today
released a picture of a man heard shouting "Woolmer!" whilst beating on
Woolmer's door.

Police hope with the release of the photo a member of the public may
recognise the suspect.

More bad jokes:

Pakistan now holds the ashes.

The Pakistan cricket team is giving up the sport - they're taking up Bob slaying instead.

Neilster -> RE: Ireland (4/10/2007 6:14:17 AM)

England will be pretty nervous about playing the dangerous Bangladesh after their loss to Australia. They're not the team one wants to play when you can't afford to drop a game. They're inconsistent but stacked with young talent who know no fear.

I thought England were going to make 280-300 but the Aussie bowlers and fieldsmen rarely panic and when they get an opportunity to squeeze the opposition, they usually take it. The subsequent run chase looked a bit easier than I suspect it was.

Matt Hayden's form has been a revelation in this World Cup. I've never been completely convinced by him; flat track bully and all that, and had written him off at the end of the Australian summer, but he's been killing them in this tournament. Striding down the wicket and flogging bowlers for towering sixes over mid-wicket, he's demoralised the opposition and taken the pressure off the batsman at the other end.

Some very interesting games to come.

Cheers, Neilster

..nice writing, really gripping ..

..a tadge , ermm, Southern Cross, but i suppose our refreshingly-colonial friends have valid opinions too..

Plodder -> RE: Ireland (4/15/2007 8:09:13 AM)

NZ through to the semis.[:)] looks like we'll be playing the Sri Lankans. They've been our bogey team as of late so it's going to be interesting...

Neilster -> RE: Ireland (4/16/2007 2:56:14 AM)

Well done Ireland on another win! If there has been one positive from this World Cup it's the promotion of the game there. Apparently there's been a four to fivefold increase in the number of kids attending junior training this season.

South Africa's loss has left things a bit more open. A big test for Australia in their game against Sri Lanka.

The organizers need a massive rocket up the proverbial for the half-arsed way this tournament has been staged. Little Caribbean colour due to nazi regulations and (for the locals) astronomical ticket prices. Banking on India and Pakistan making the finals to draw zillions of cashed-up tourists was madness given that India hasn't won an international tournament since 1985 (from memory) and Pakistan's propensity to mysteriously...err...fall over (cough) [;)]. And it's being going so long, I doubt we'll recognise any of the players when they return. Children will have been born and finished their primary schooling without knowing their fathers. Wives will assume their husbands are deceased and obtain the coroner's permission to remarry. The players will return to a bewildering world of the future, with flying cars, robot servants and even more things that beep at you. [:D]

Cheers, Neilster

Neilster -> RE: Ireland (4/19/2007 2:27:56 AM)

Bad luck Eng-ger-land. Actually, given their performance in the finals of the Commonwealth Bank series, I thought they could be a dangerous team but their play here was typically half-arsed. "Ship-faced!" I loved that headline after pedalogate. [:D]

http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/iccexclusive009.shtml

A full strength Sri Lanka or New Zealand will be very tough. South Africa are likely to self destruct when it's there to be won but we can't count on that [:'(]. I'd still have my money on Australia though.

Cheers, Neilster

Neilster -> Australia Victorious! (4/30/2007 5:33:24 AM)

Thanks for coming everybody else. [:'(] Three in a row and the best team certainly won, although there were 3 or 4 others who could have. I was hoping Adam Gilchrist would go off but 149 from 104 balls is out of control. The game ended in farce but as the BBC commentators said, cricket and rain don't go together. And the umpires had a brain explosion.

I knew that having the World Cup in the Caribbean would be a disaster but the ICC seems to have gone out of their way to bugger it up as well. Hopefully they get their act together for the next one.

Now really, Australia had the best team in 1992 and Sri Lanka got lucky against them in the final in 1996 (bloody Arivinda de Silva [:@] ), so it really should be 6 in a row. [:D]

Cheers, Neilster

Never!

Hey, I've been pretty generous in my comments about all the other teams that have been making up the numbers...err...I mean competing against Australia in this World Cup. [:D]

I really thought New Zealand would make the final and be very competitive in it. There is no certainty in these knock-out competitions.

Cheers, Neilster
