Gendarme -> Europe map? (3/22/2007 1:03:52 AM)

The rest of the world has been shown to us, but unless I missed it on an earlier thread, there has been no East and Western Europe yet. Even though that may be the most basic and least changing of all the maps, would it be feasible to give us a glimpse? Thanks.

Anthony DeChristopher

The European map segment was the first one done. That was quite a while ago, and there have been many revisions, so a fresh, complete presentation seems justified. Thanks for asking.

United Kingdom - note corrected rail lines.

19th and last in the series.

Southern Europe overview. I had to trim this to get it to fit within the 500kb file size limit.

I am sure that Patrice would welcome comments on the map labels. He did a lot of work on them.

As Young Mr Grace would say in Are you Being Served?, "You've all done very well!" [:D]

As you can see, he wasn't too young. Also, great work on the labels Patrice.

Cheers, Neilster

Frederyck -> RE: Europe map? (3/22/2007 11:02:44 AM)

These all look very very nice! I really like all the extra tags present! Kivoy Rog eh? I'll have to google that! :)

A few nit picks about the names of the northern rivers in Sweden. The ones used on the map (Starting from the top: Torneälven, Luleälven, Skellefteälven and down to Umeälven) are more like colloquial names. Their proper names are (from the top):

Torne Älv
Lule Älv
Skellefte Älv and
Ume Älv.

Indalsälven and further south are correct.

There are several conflicting notions about the names of these four rivers (and a few more smaller ones), but I have spoken to lots of people living in those areas of Sweden, and they all agree that the names used on the map as it is now *aren't* incorrect, but the ones I have suggested here are *more* correct.

:)

Gendarme -> RE: Europe map? (3/22/2007 7:08:41 PM)

Fantastic work! Far richer than the paper maps, interesting additions with all the place names and points of interest.

Maybe add Luxemborg as a place name? Not as another minor, because that would upset USE and such.

Also, don't know if it's intentional, but the sea zone boundary between Liverpool and Belfast doesn't run exactly port to port.

Again, these maps are awesome. On top of all the improvements made to the other world maps, especially converting Asia/Africa to Euro scale, this European map is superior. It will be so much more interesting to stage a battle over "Anzio" or "El Alamein" than "hex E1234" or whatever.

WIF FE maps run sea area boundaries through all sea hexes with the explanation that the player should use the center dot of the hex to determine transit distance for air units. CWIF, and now MWIF, always run sea area boundaries down the edge of a hex, the same way the country borders are done. This makes it a little clearer when calculating air distance to a sea area. Coastal hexes often have a sea area boundary bisect the hex, which inidcates the coastal hex borders on two sea areas.

From the programming point of view, the map is drawn one hex at a time, pretty much in total ignorance of all the other hexes. The rail lines are an exception, but even then, only the 6 adjacent hexes are examined.

I can't wait to get my hands on the real thing and scroll across the world. It looks fantastic (very much improved over the paper maps IMHO). Definitely a definitive 1940's map of the world in gamer terms.....

Thanks for the feedback Frederyck !

Hey, weren't these names already corrected a while ago [:D] ?
You should reach a concensus, you nordic people [:D] !
Indeed, what interst me the most, are the English Exonames for places, that is, the name on English maps. Exceptions may happens though, but the general trend is that English Exonames are used.

About the names you listed, they all have the "Älv" word in common.
Am I right supposing that thë "Älv" word means "River", or "Stream", of something like that ? If so, I'd not put this word on the map, and I'd only put Torne, Lule, Skellefte and Ume. What do you think ?

Well, this part of the map is already cluttered enough for my taste, and Luxembourg is such a long name !

Yes, I think so too.
I'm open to suggestion for additional places names that can give a better WW2 flavor to the map.

I would love if Harry printed bits of those maps for the normal WiF FE game.

Why not an European scaled China map kit for WiF FE for example ?

Torne Älv
Lule Älv
Skellefte Älv and
Ume Älv.

In fact, when I search them in wikipedia.com, I find :
Torne
Lule
Skellefte
Ume
So I've put thoss names on the map.
