Minesweeper inspired me to look up more PH photos at my favorite website, http://www.history.navy.mil/branches/org11-2.htm

USS Shaw, 1937:

Notice how everthing forward of the mast is missing... eeesh.

And these men of iron sailed this thing from PH to Mare Island, too, to get fully repaired.

USS Shaw was in floating dry dock YFD-2 on the morning of December 7.

Bombs dropped during the second wave attack set off the Shaw's forward magazines:

I forget the build time of a DD pre-war. (My books are at home.) Here is USS Shaw after repair (finished June, '42):
