Been looking about and this doesnt seem too bad.
Any thoughts on the subject be great.
I jusr really need somethingto play some of those high end games out there these days- sick of the computer either crashing or freezing on crap to very low specs.

I might be buying it tomorrow and setting her up on ANZAC day.

Make sure you stay faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar away from Vista: it's too new and unstable. Go for XP and wait for Vista to settle down.

Get at least 2 gig of memory , I prefer AMD myself, for non AMD I would go faster if you can.

The graphic card is not good enough for 3D-gaming and you need at least 2 gig RAM these days. The processor isn't worth much without a good graphiccard and RAM.

I just got a new one a couple of weeks ago.
4 GB Ram. (Even though Vista, yes Vista, only sees 3 GB)
20" flatscreen.
I didn't get a huge drive as I don't play a lot of different games.

Kept my other computer to go online with.

Hm, if it's not a motherboard limitation then it sounds like you got the 32-bit version of Vista. The 64-bit version could see all 4GB if the hardware supported it. Some motherboards also don't actually support a full 4GB even though you can slot it in.

Muzrub,

I would take 7900 GS as it is really good graphic card and it's not very expensive now. 7600 is also good but I would take 7900 or 7950 :)

Also what others suggested new system would have to have 2 GB of memory. Memory is very important! That way you can keep "youth" in your system for longer time. And always my rule is never to buy latest graphic card or latest CPU etc... it's not worth it!
So I always go with slighty less than top components.

EDIT: And take Intel of course! Stay away from AMD like from devil itself. :)

I just wish Matrix and HPS would produce Mac versions of all their games. I'd never go near a bloody PC again.

1 GB is reserved for the OS (tha is for all Windows 32bit OSs). You could tweak the Boot.ini to have all 4GB show (I assume you checked how much the Os "sees" under "Control Panel > System"), but that is not really recommended.

System seems like a good one. I do disagree with Terminus about Vista, I beta tested it for 7 months and then purchased it. Vista is the most stable OS Microsoft has ever released. So far I have no problems playing every Matrix game I have on Vista, plus all other games I own. If you do get a system with Vista on it add an extra gig of ram. Good luck.

I was under impression that new Dual Core's are faster and better (if not cheaper) than AMD LOLZ

They are. Core 2 Duo is what you want to buy these days, that is for a regular gaming / all day use rig.

How do you do that, Marc? I only see how to change the paging file which is different to physical memory.

Well, click START, then Control Panel, then System. Under the general tab it shows you the ammount of RAM.

mmmm....yeah...I know that...but that tells you how much ram is on your system, not how much the operating system is grabbing, which is what your post was saying.

No my post was about how much the OS is "seeing", not "grabbing". I just said the with 32bit OSs of MS there is one GB reserved to the OS itself. That is way people only "see" 3GB in that very panel, even if they have 4GB installed.

Really? I've never noticed that. I'll have to check tonight. I have no idea how much memory my PC at work has, so the fact is says 1GB, suggests, from what u r saying, that it has 2GB.
My PC at home has 2GB, so I will check when I get hom.

Mario, curious as to why you are so adamant about staying away from the AMD. I have had AMDs for my last 3 computers and haven't had a problem, BUT, I'm not that computer technical. Almost time for me to upgrade and would genuinely like to know the reasons behind your statement to consider in my purchase decision.

There's nothing wrong with AMD. For years now, quite a few years, AMD have consistently produced processors comparable or better than their Intel counterparts and at a reduced cost.

However, Intel do seem to have grabbed the mantle with the Core 2 Duo which does appear to be faster than AMDs dual core and at a comparable price.

I've had AMD for years and what pushed me there was cost and how easy it was to determine what I needed. However, if I upgrade in the future, I may well go Intel again.

However, I can put a Dual Core AMD 64 4000+ (that's the equivelant of 2x2.5GHz) on my existing motherboard at a cost of £80! Not bad.

Well, I will tell you - personally I had big problems with AMD 1800+ based PC. But, I don't blame so much AMD but lousy manufacturers of motherboards from Taiwan from example, SOLTEK. And others.

I am not telling that AMD is so bad but just my personal view is that INTEL based platform offers better stability - few percent that acounts who is faster or slower doesn't really matter in today's games or application. (except video editing that INTEL is better in churning out).

Of course I am not dismissing AMD - here AMD is even more popular and some hardware reviewers are recommending it much more than INTEL. That guy was working for
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx and still is there I think.

So really I should listen to him but as I said just personal choice for INTEL.
