JudgeDredd -> Ok...I'm lost (4/29/2007 1:45:01 PM)

I am officially lost.

I fired up the 1775-1783 Campaign and thought "Now what?". I mean, I know I have to take 20 strategic towns and 13 objectives...but with what? All my units seem to be locked, at least for a few turns.

So am I just to click the "Next Turn" button until my units become active?

And an annoying thing is...I can't see, at a glance, what units are under my command (available for moving)...not even on the mini map. Very annoying because I have to scan the map from top to bottom, left to right, looking for towns under my control with a little box with a number in it...then clicking on it reveals the units are locked. If I have missed it, then I'd appreciate someone pointing it out.

I have read the manual, by the way, and use it to reference, but iirc, there wasn't anything in there about being able to see what units you can and can't move.

You can cycle/browse backward and forward through all your available land units with the E,R keys, and all your naval units -- including the infamous bateaux -- w/the T,Y keys.

You should be able to see small red and blue blocks on the minimap, indicating Brit and Colonial positions, respectively. There are also filters to see what regions you control, or are in-supply, etc., but I rarely use them.

If you're locked-in, I take it your play'n the Brits; BoA does that to simulate the inaction of local Brit commanders until they get orders from Parliment over what to do w/their troublesome subjects; news traveled very slowly back then, but you're only immobile for a few turns.

It could be worse; you could be playing the Colonials!

JudgeDredd, I know how you feel. But if it is any consolation to you, it does become easier and it is a fascinating game. What threw me for a loop my first few games was how simple it all appeared and how really complex it is. What I typically do once things begin to move (beside using the keys JoeD. touched on) is to click on the event highlights at the bottom of the screen to take me to that particular unit and location. It is an easy way to see who is active this turn and what the situation is. This game grows on you and at this point, I must say it is one of my all time favorites. I hope my post was of some use to you. Cheers.

That's ok...thx for the tips.

  • E, R, T, Y keys to cycle through units which cana move
  • Knowing that ALL the Brits are static for a few turns
Those two alone will help me. I was stuck trying to locate units to move. The fact I can use those jeys AND know that most of my units are stuck in-situ help immensely already. I was baffled, that's all.

One suggestion I made awhile back was that the little "locked" icon should appear on the unit ledger pages. So far, no joy.

Those ERTY keys should give you all your units, whether they can move or not. But be advised -- esp. when playing the Brits -- that officers can have a low Strategic Rating, which determines the results of their monthly initiative test. If the officer fails this test, his army will suffer movement and also special order/offensive posture penalties.

You can tell if he failed by the appearance of a bizzarre "brown letter icon" -- actually an envelope -- on the army.

This info is all in the updated manual, but if you don't have pdf v 1.09, download a copy from the Useful Links at the top of the BoA forum; it will help explain things, but the frustration will probably remain.

for example, I haven't beaten the Brit AI since Pocus' last patch improvement. While AGEOD is fine tuning the best AI available, someone should remind them that this is supposed to be a historical simulation, not a chess program; I don't mind when my chess computer beats me, but I get real annoyed when BoA turns into a national abortion.

Some units in Canada and out West can move from the start.
