Greyhunterlp -> AAR - News from the Front. (6/2/2007 9:38:02 AM)

Thanks to Gil for moving this labour of love to the main page.
I should point out that this game was started in Febuary 2007, and therefore is an older version of the game. so if theirs anything odd going on, then I may well be fixed by now. so sit back, and enjoy.

Grey Hunter

Right, I suppose i better say something.

This is the counterpart to my Union game, this time I'm playing the confederates. the difficulty is First Sargent, its the coming fury scenario, and i think I've bitten off a little more than I can chew.

as you can see, theres substantially more work involved here, and your going to see less of the mechanics behind the game. but it's going to be more of a story for you. I've put some stats up, so you can follow things, but I'm never going to put the governors rating down, or anything like that.

I hope you enjoy, and remeber, this is going to take time, I'm commited to filling at least a page a turn, so this could turn into a VERY long AAR - if not in game time, then in real time, its taking about 30 mins a page at the moment.

Forgot which side I'm playing this time.

Man, this is a real immersive AAR ! Great work at synthetizing news... you're from Time Magazine ? (the only newspaper able to time-travel)... [8|]

Odium -> RE: News from the Front. (6/2/2007 8:29:36 PM)

Thanks for the comments.

I should add that, having done some newspaper layout back on my college paper, I can appreciate how difficult it must be to get everything to fit on a single page, and formatted correctly.

I hope this isn't taking you away from anything important, like curing cancer or whatever your day job might be...

Greyhunterlp -> RE: News from the Front. (6/3/2007 8:06:08 AM)

well, I am actually a Research Assistant for the Medical Research Council, but I dont do any work on cancer.

Very nice work Hunter! [8D] can't wait to see the next edition of 'The Forge' as we are apt to call it in Atlanta, GA [;)]

What a great promo for the game! The misspellings add a very nice touch of verisimilitude. Three cheers!

Actually, thats just my Dyslexia and a lack of a spellchecker in Photoshop.

but then again, If lincon can't spell, then why should it bother me. :)

Just for anyone interested.  I run my turns from pressing end turn up untill i'm ready to press end turn again, and this last turn, involving a battle, has just taken me about an hour and a quater from starting to posting.

hence the gaps in posting, I do have a Real Life, and I don't want to commit without knowing I have the time to compleate a whole turn. so if I go dark for a couple of days, blame the GF wanting to see me. Its not that I've lost interest. its just that I've commited myslef to something very large and time consuming. - but still fun for me, and its teaching me a few things.

Owch. Just owch. (1hr 55 mins, but 2 battles)

netjam99 -> RE: News from the Front. (6/10/2007 4:37:03 PM)

Man you are doing a very nice job with this! That danged General Johnson! Send him to be a fort commander at some god forsaken point on the map, would not trust him with a Div. [:D]

By the way Gen Johnson is a hero in my game. He saved Memphis and right now has Grant blocked off with me hanging on to everything out West. On the other hand I am not doing near as well as you in the East. My Shenadoah Army just lost a battle and I have given up much of Virginia...but hanging on to Fredricksburg and Richmond.

Sorry about this one, and the wait. I'd just finished the orignial on monday night, when photoshop crashed, loosing the 40 mins work, and all my in battle screenshots, so all I'm left with are the end of turn. so this is not the best example.

But thats 1 technial hit  in 10. lets hope its my last.

PS - Johnstones a space filler, but it kinda works as a story.

Drex -> RE: News from the Front. (6/13/2007 9:32:25 PM)

All I can say is sign me up for a subscription. This is class A journalism. Even if this isn't a formal entry in the AAR contest it should get some honorary award. the only criticism is the maps are difficult to read in some instances but perhaps this was the historical case too.

Gil R. -> RE: News from the Front. (6/13/2007 10:06:35 PM)

Drex,
You know, your comment gives me an idea -- perhaps Matrix should create an "AAR's Hall of Fame" in which it either reproduces (or just provides links to) the best AAR's done for its various games. Erik, perhaps something to consider.

chadandpia -> RE: News from the Front. (6/13/2007 10:17:03 PM)

I'd like to add that aside from being totally hooked on this great game.  Sitting here are work and reading Grey's brilliant and imaginative AAR just makes me long for Friday & Saturday nights (my only computer "playtime" unfortunately) even more!  I cannot stop playing or thinking about this game!  Kudos to the devs and it's folks like Grey with such great things to read sharing their in-game experiences that keeps that level of interest in the game, at least in myself, that high.

now back to my normal lurker status! [;)]

Gil R. -> RE: News from the Front. (6/13/2007 10:23:23 PM)

Our pleasure.

Ever heard of calling in sick?

chadandpia -> RE: News from the Front. (6/13/2007 10:27:26 PM)

Ha! with a 17 month old son who's daycare is also at my job site .. calling in sick means he stays home with me. He's old enough now to get upset if Daddy shows attention to the computer and not to him .. can't wait untill he's old enough to start teaching gaming too! [:D]

anyways, don't you know it's BAD karma to call in sick when your not really sick! [;)] hehehe

Drex -> RE: News from the Front. (6/13/2007 10:48:24 PM)

Gil- yes a Hall of Fame would preserve the hard work that is going into this AAR and hopefully others after it. An example of how far one can go with this type of narrative. Gray hunter has even added mis-spellings, fading and mis-spacing to produce a historical flavorof the times.
