Has anyone done any work with creating the Negro Leagues or creating any of the all-time greats from those leagues? I'm thinking about creating some players like Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige to use in my association, but has anybody else done anything like this?

This is one of the great "what-if's", but seriously, I wouldn't know where to begin on assigning relative ratings. If these guys aren't in the Lahman database, you'd just have to create them and take your best guess. A touchy subject, that's for sure.

It could also be argued that Shaun might need to raise the power attribute maximum just for Josh Gibson.[;)]

I've been thinking.... I don't really know anything about how the Lahman database is set up, but I'm wondering if it can be opened up and edited? If it can I'm wondering if I can enter in some Negro league players with real or estimated season totals so that those players show up as draft choices during the known or estimated year that they started playing baseball. That way, later on in my association guys like Paige or Gibson would become available for draft.

Any ideas on whether this is possible? I'm going to begin looking into it.

Just imagine, the 1935 Pirates with the addition of Josh Gibson.[:D]

If it's possible, and you're willing to do the work, I'm sure there are many of us out here who would take advantage of it.

One problem will be determing which stats to draw from. Record-keeping for Negro Leagues was spotty, especially in the early going.

One way to do this, although not through the Lahman dB, would be to choose a Negro League player and year. Then take that player's stats and pro-rate him for a 154-game season. If, in your mind, that player was of MLB quality, you would then find players with similar stats and age (in that season) and give your Negro League players those ratings.

For example, if a Josh Gibson had a (154-game pro-rated) total of 550 at-bats and 175 hits, you would go to your chosen MLB year and find players who had similar numbers. Find however many you want and average those players' CONTACT numbers to get your Negro player's CONT rating. You would need to do the same for all of the ratings, with Arm and Range being very subjective. You could, of course, adjust your new player(s) up or down in any area, based on whatever you feel is justified.

Once you've gathered the data for the player(s) you want to put into MLB, just go in and create them.

Of course, if you figure out how to edit the Lahman dB and add teams/players into the dB, please share.[;)]

In the past you were able to edit the Lahman database or copy it and create your own. I was at one time working on that to create a local Alaska Baseball League database. But with the new 2007 Puresim I think the database is now locked and you can't go in and edit it. I could be wrong and hopefully Shaun comes in this thread and explains it for us.

If someone was willing to create a Negro League Association file I'm sure lots of people would enjoy playing it. It would take alot of time and effort but would be a great add-in for the game. Maybe we can start a thread and everyone can pitch in helping look up players, stats, team names, stadium's, pics etc etc.

ak,

You may want to double-check this, but I believe that Shaun had said the database would be unlocked for the CE series... I'm not sure WHICH of the CE series, or if this was something implemented in CE 1, but ... I really do remember reading something about this. Then again, I'm not sure if it was the .psa which was unlocked or the Lahman database.

Now that I think about it more, it's likely the former, as the latter isn't technically Shaun's to begin with...

...hmmm...

... yeah, you might want to look for this to be sure.
