rudbeck47 -> Running WiTP of a memory stick (6/27/2007 2:43:14 PM)

Dear Forum,

Most likely this is not possible - however, if I donøt ask - I will not know the answer.

Is is possible to "install" WiTP on a memory stick (USB drive - whatever) and run it from there. The reason being that I would like to be able to play when I'm travelling with my work-computer (on which I'm not allowed to install serious games).

Thanks
rudbeck

R8J -> RE: Running WiTP of a memory stick (6/27/2007 2:50:52 PM)

I've done it with other games with no problems.

Mike Solli has done it... he used a program that leaves no traces on the host computer (i.e. no installation files, temp files, changes to the registry) so it is ideal for running it on machines that are "locked up tight"... you might ask him... i have the name of the program at home if you are interested.

Yes please rtrapasso,

Very much appriciated if you could get the name of the software

Will do. Thanks.

Who said this was a "serious" game? I laugh every time I send my CV's out on a mission, forget to take my fighter off of training, and watch as they become Jap-made reefs[:D][:@][:D]

Clearly user error![:'(]

I just get a mental picture of my little digital guys saying:
Skipper: "We've got multiple bogies inbound!!"
CAG: That's swell but nobody's leaving the classroom until I get their homework!"
Japanese Flight leader: Looks like Admiral Dumba$$ is back!!!"
Admiral Dumba$$ (me): D'oh!![X(]

Admiral: Which retard schdualed training when were 150 miles off the HI?

It's possible.
I used it many times.
You just need to export one short line from registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MATRIX GAMES/WITP), save it as .reg file and click it before you start the game.
Sometimes you need to change "installed to" line, but that's all.

rtrapasso -> RE: Running WiTP of a memory stick (6/28/2007 4:49:50 AM)

OK - with this program you supposedly do not need to install on the host computer*:

MojoPac by RingCube Technology.

http://www.mojopac.com

*there are computers that are locked up for various reasons and you can't install anything on them... hopefully this gets around it.

Yep - but you can avoid the Network Admin's wrath by this route - since nothing is installed on the computer, they don't see anything... of course, you are still using the Network's electrons and all... [:-] [:'(]

rtrapasso -> RE: Running WiTP of a memory stick (6/28/2007 4:40:39 PM)

BTW - if you DO go this route, let me know... one person said he has gotten it to work, but i'd like to see if there are problems with the method if i am going to keep recommending it.

oh, sorry - i didn't see it! The title of the thread caught my eye this time...

EDIT - well, you got the answer (eventually)... [:'(]

sprior -> RE: Man Do I feel Bad (6/28/2007 11:54:38 PM)

I installed a trial version of Mojopac on a 2GB memory stick (USB drive, thumb drive, whatever.) Read the install instructions carefully! Tuned my USB connection for best performance. Copied the WITP installation and update files to it.

When you start Mojopac you have an XP_like interface. The C drive as presented in here is in fact the memory stick.

Obviously it uses RAM and processing power from the host system, in my case a Dell 620 with 1GB of RAM and dual core 1.8GHz processor. I've been waiting over an hour now and so far the installation is thus:

rudbeck47 -> RE: Man Do I feel Bad (6/29/2007 9:16:19 AM)

So you got Mojopac to work hopefully. What if you move the USB drive to another computer - will it run then - or does WiTP miss items in the Windows registry?

/rudbeck47

Reg -> An alternative?? (6/29/2007 12:49:19 PM)

There is another alternative though I'm not sure how practical you will find it.

[image]local://upfiles/446/7A999277FDE04C5984A1EFFEEC2C6E66.jpg[/image]

This is a screenshot of WITP running in a virtual machine (Note WITP running under Win98 running on an XP machine).

The software required is a free download of VMware but you will need an operating system to load as well.

The pros??

  • Everything is file based and absolutely independant of host machine. (I only needed a 2GB virtual hard disk file for WITP running on minimum install Win98).
  • Any registry entries are in the virtual hard disk file along with the operating system.
  • Runs under Linux as well (with Linux version of VMware).
  • WITP seems to run quite quickly and satisifactorily (with a graphics glitch - see below)
  • You can snapshot and capture and save (for replay) the whole machine (including the state of your game) at any point in time.

The cons???

  • DirectX seems to be a bit problematic but the only the images with a shadow file seem to be affected (see aircraft images above). If you run with animations off you won't notice.
  • Large amounts of the virtual hard drive is taken up with OS files (Linux Operating Systems can be stripped down into a 100K or so kernal but I doubt Windows will be so flexible).
  • Probably not as fast as a real machine but if the host has the same processor as the target machine, emulation should not be much slower than the real thing...
  • Probably the biggie: VMware needs to be installed on your machine!!! (Sprior, what do sysadmins think of this program???)

More info on this thread: WiTP on Linux

EDIT: VMware also make a free Virtual Machine Player which runs precreated Virtual Machines (files). Maybe sysadmins might be a bit more tolerant of this program (Sprior????).

I have not experimented with running these programs on a memory stick but the virtual machine (data) file should quite happily live on one. Unfortunately most windows executables need to be installed to run. Maybe someone will be able to find out if VMplayer will work from a memory stick.

Oh take me back to my old Amiga days were I just used to load any program (or OS file) I liked up into a RAM drive and run them from there. All you had to do was redirect a couple of system assigns (usually with a script I'd written) to point at the ram drive and away they went!! No disk access at all.

{Brought to you in the interests of protecting the environment by recycling threads} [:D]

i haven't actually tried this, but the whole point of the Mojopac program is to "put a computer in your pocket" - it is supposed to be utterly portable. Once you get the program on the memory stick, you can go to any (Windows based) machine and use the program on the stick - no more installation required.

So, install WITP on the mem stick, then you can use it at work, on the road, at your brother-in-law's house (assuming you can get to his computer), etc. just from the mem stick.

No, I didn't, I gave up trying to install it after 2 hours. Supposedly you can plug the memory drive into any XP machine and your apps installed on it will work. I haven't tried that yet either.

You also need admin priviledges on the host PC to run this. You might get this on your brother in laws PC but a more doubtful at work.

sprior -> RE: An alternative?? (6/29/2007 4:05:04 PM)

As a sysadmin I would be hesitant about allowing "normal" users to install or run virtual machines on their PCs. The main reason is because you, meaning me, have no way of monitoring what those machines are doing as they are not on the domain. I can't lock them down or see how much porn you have on them...

Aside from that transporting big .vhd files aound is a pian.
