What the heck, I was looking up a little info on naval guns and came across this (hopefully) non-discript photo. What ship is this.

Disclaimer: there are no rules to this game [:'(][;)]

I will tell you she was a ship in the Pacific theater.

afspret -> RE: Mystery ship (7/30/2007 7:04:36 AM)

Looks like the stern mounted 5/38 on a Casablanca class CVE, although which one I couldn't say. I say Casablanca class 'cause they were the only class with a squared off stern (Bogue & Charger had rounded sterns and Commencement Bay had two quad 40s on their stern).

niceguy2005 -> RE: Mystery ship (7/30/2007 7:05:39 PM)

That's correct...now which Cassablanca class CVE? [;)]

Barb -> RE: Mystery ship (7/30/2007 7:19:15 PM)

niceguy2005 -> RE: Mystery ship (7/30/2007 7:44:26 PM)

Feinder -> RE: Mystery ship (7/30/2007 10:21:04 PM)

I saw the mud, and thought... New Orleans! What ship was tied up in New Orleans (later to be hit by a barge, then sold for scrap... Cabot).

Not Cabot aye?

Hm.

I don't know then.

Rats.

niceguy2005 -> RE: Mystery ship (7/30/2007 10:28:54 PM)

What is that tower sticking up out of the ship...or is that in the background? Almost looks like an oil rig.

Dixie -> RE: Mystery ship (7/30/2007 10:40:13 PM)

That is part of the ship, it waan't a part of her original fit though.

Naskra -> RE: Mystery ship (7/30/2007 10:52:40 PM)

That's the one. It was a controversial scrapping as many people wanted her back in the UK as a museum, but no-one would stump up the cash [:(]

niceguy2005 -> RE: Mystery ship (7/31/2007 2:33:18 AM)

Do you know what the story is behind the pic?

Dixie -> RE: Mystery ship (7/31/2007 2:37:59 AM)

She was scrapped in India where ships are commonly run aground for scrapping in developing nations. They are dragged into the shallows at high tide, then when the tide goes out work begins. My Dad has been on several ships that were on their final journey for this kind of disposal.
