JudgeDredd -> Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 4:30:07 PM)

...and Matrix

Just wanted to say thank you for this gem.

sol_invictus -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 4:44:33 PM)

Indeed.[&o] I am looking forward to the future releases from Frank. We know that CLGA2 is in the works, but haven't heard anything about Sumpter to Appomattox 4 for awhile. I assume it is next up after CLGA 2. I wonder if Imperial Ambition is still a possible project. I think there is alot of interest in that Era.

JD Walter -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 4:46:12 PM)

Seconded! This is one of the best wargames I've played this year.[:)]

(BTW, what is "GLGA"? thx.)

Completely agree! You'd think there is a niche market for this time frame due to so little that's been done. Matrix does a great job keeping me from family time!

Redan -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 5:31:04 PM)

a wonderful game. much thanks.

sol_invictus -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 6:37:13 PM)

Def Zep, Campaigns of Le Grand Armee. Second version will cover the 1806 Campaign.

tgb -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 7:04:02 PM)

Just adding my kudos. I purchased this with some trepidation because I was sick of WW II and the Civil War. Easily the best war game I've played in a very long time.

sol_invictus -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 7:05:41 PM)

It's like a breath of fresh air.

SteveD64 -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 7:19:29 PM)

It's very good. Planning and decision-making are hallmarks of a deep wargame.

If you attack all along the front without a clear objective you will achieve nothing- this game makes you decide where your main blow will fall.

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 8:00:12 PM)

Agree.  Great game.

I'll pile on...havin' great fun w/ this one.

LarryP -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 8:15:10 PM)

I have a lot of great games that have high ratings in PCGamer and just globally. Galactic Civilizations-2 and Dark Avatar expansion, Civ4 and Warlords expansion, Company Of Heroes, F.E.A.R., Supreme Commander, and many more PLUS lots of Matrix games. However, I have had MORE fun with GoA than all of these games combined. I don't really know why, but I have. I was very cautious before purchasing this title mainly because of what was said about the interface and resolution. I sure am glad that TheHellPatrol enlightened me to this gem as he bought it first and then sold me on it.

Thanks Frank Hunter for the many years of work you put into this excellent game. I love it! [&o] [:D]

PS: Frank, if you're going to do another game, please don't take ten years to complete it! [;)]

MorningDew -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 9:39:48 PM)

Have to agree. I'll be honest. The Interface thread worried me. Then I read Frank's reply and bought purely because I thought his reply was refreshingly honest. Boy am I glad I did.

Great fun.

Exactly the same here. When I saw how kind his replies were, I wanted to support him.

Mightfox -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 9:46:47 PM)

Indeed, the game is fantastic, and I can't wait to see more from Frank.

*Lava* -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 9:47:52 PM)

Wow!

The game really turned out well!

I'm so happy that all you're hard work has produced such a marvelous game.

SiTheSly -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 10:19:17 PM)

I must confess I was disappointed at first. I never buy a game when it first comes out preferring to to see how it is accepted by the wargaming community and not have to ask questions on forums. The problem for me was the manual but enough has been said on that now.

The game is first class with simple mechanics but a very wide choice of strategies to persue. I find the level of abstraction just right for this conflict and game reflects the big decisions of the time. Do you send out the HSF to try and keep the British Empire from intervening on the continent or keep it as a threat. Do you want to pound an enemy to pieces before lauching an offensive or is an ally about to collapse forcing you to go on the offensive and suffer the terrible casualities which mount at an alarming rate for even moderate attacks. The economic system is great and you never seem to have enough of everything. I especially like the hand wringing decision to spend a valuable offensive point to capture that resource needed to get an extra point but knowing that it could all go badly wrong.

With a decent FAQ the game is a classic for this conflict.

After playing for many hours now I even like the interface which now appears simple and concise.

Thanks for the game

Simon

FrankHunter -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 11:14:49 PM)

Thanks for the support guys!

I also just wanted to add that CLGA2 covers not just the 1806 campaign but also the Spring and Autumn campaigns of 1813 plus more.

And yes I still plan on finishing the long-delayed Imperial Ambition (politics, economics and war in Europe in the age of Bismarck and Napoleon III) because the period is a favourite of mine.

FrankHunter -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 11:17:34 PM)

I would also like to thank everyone who has been answering questions for me.  With the volume of comments that the game has generated I've been finding it difficult to read and answer everything.  So its great when I see questions already answered by other players.  Thank you!

sol_invictus -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 11:24:22 PM)

Frank, I am ecstatic that you are still planning on releasing Imperial Ambition, since this is one of my favorite eras as well. You have quite a nice selection of games on your plate.[&o]

TheHellPatrol -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/30/2007 11:26:07 PM)

[:)]Very elegant game, i too find i can't stop playing it. It is a refreshing change from wargames i've been playing and the design IMHO is something i'll enjoy for quite some time. Thank you, may i please have another?[:D]

OK. I bite, what is CLGA2??? Gosh I hope I don't regret this question...[8|]

You've earned it. GOA is a superior product.

That sounds unbelievably cool. Best of luck in your endeavour.

HORST324 -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/31/2007 3:17:09 AM)

Ditto on all the above comments, Frank. This game is just wonderful. My only regret is that I haven't had the time yet to really dig into it yet, but I'll make some time real soon. Thank God we have an intelligent, fun game that's NOT WWII or American Civil War. This period has been so overlooked in the wargaming industry until just recently. It's guys like you and Ted Raicer who have breathed new life into the hobby. And if Imperial Ambition is anything like Guns of August, I'm going to have to quit my job! Great work!
I do have two minor sound issues with GOA:
1) I get aircraft sound effects on the Naval Zone control screen. I'm sure you wanted naval guns blasting there;
2) Can you get a more thundersous sound for the barrages - these sound like pop guns!
Thanks again and best of luck with your future projects.

06 Maestro -> RE: Thanks Frank (7/31/2007 4:35:26 AM)

Yep, Frank, you did a hell of a job with this game. The more I play it, the more I appreciate it. It does have the right "feel" to it for a WW1 game.
Thanks.

jwarrenw13 -> RE: Thanks Frank (8/1/2007 6:20:47 PM)

I'll just have to say again, this is a brilliant game.  I'm 53.  I've been around.  This game is special.  It has a chesslike quality, a simplicity but complexity.  The AI is very good.  This is fun.  It creates tension.  It makes you think.  I found myself last night wanting to play just one more turn.  Great game.

Syagrius -> RE: Thanks Frank (8/1/2007 8:03:27 PM)

Wow! comments are overwhelmingly positive for this game. I guess I will put it on my next buy list!
