Developments, 22 July 1946 Sector 25 0739 hours Confederate forces continue to remain active in this area. Intelligence reports bridging units have set up at least 5 seperate crossings over the Ohio in this sector alone. Bay City and Ridgeway remain under enemy control. Rosiclare remains under 2ID control but is threatened by enemy advances from 2 directions. The British 36th Infantry has derailed from Carmi and moved south into blocking positions north of Ridgeway. SHQ will advise local commanders of objectives within the hour. 1459 hours 2ID SHQ reports heavy fighting around and directly north of Bay City. A concentrated counterattack led by the 69th Tank Battalion was launched at approximately 1300 hours against enemy infantry and armored forces 2 miles north of Bay City. Terrain was favorable for flexible armored movement and initial gains were successful. Enemy resistance stiffened however resulting in the loss of 200 men and over 30 tanks. Confederate armor remained dug in and proved difficult to dislodge even with support from 90mm AA guns used in the direct fire role. HQ 69th reports the confirmed destruction of only 15 enemy tanks and an undetermined number of enemy infantry. 1820 hours Leading elements of the British 36th Infantry Division advised they were occupying buildings in the northern outskirts of Ridgeway after heavy fighting. There are unconfirmed reports Confederate forces are retreating to the east and southeast. Tanks from the 72nd Tank Battalion along with Assault Guns from the 121st Cavalry Battalion report engaging Confederate A-2F Battler tanks just outside the town and claimed the destruction of 2 of them. German-made armored AT guns, possibly Marder II or III series, were sighted along with assault guns and halftracks. Enemy resistance softened throughout the day allowing the advancement of US forces. To the southwest of the city several infantry battalions were brought up a halt an enemy advance west of Peters Creek. Ridgeway Combat Report, 22 July 1946 1830 hours Intelligence advises the A-2F Battler tank is a licensed copy of the German-made Panzer IV, possibly an G, H or J model. Main gun calibur appears to be at least 75mm and is most likely a direct copy of the German-made 7.5cm K.W.K.40. Reported shell velocity on the German model is near 750m/s. Soviet data on armor penetration shows a frontal shot is able to pentrate armor on the M4A2 at 1000m, and from the side at 3,500m. Commanders are advised to use paired tank tactics and discourage tank vs. tank battles, which this model of Confederate tank is clearly superior. Developments, 23 July, 1946 Sector 24 2ID SHQ advises of heavy contact with enemy forces from the Tiptonville pocket south through Caruthersville to Blythville, Arkansas. At 0901 hours the 76th Mechanized Cavalry Co relayed advanced recon companies had traveled 20 miles south on the Blythville highway and passed through the towns of Osceola and Wilson with no enemy contact. The towns were ordered torched and recon teams were advised to continue their advance south. At 1124 hours Mechanized Infantry from the 211th Infanty Regiment backed with assault guns and 90mm AA guns attacked a large Confederate force on the highway 2 miles west of the Tiptonville breech point. Enemy resistance was stiff - local HQ reports the loss of approx 200 men and at least 20 SU-85 assault guns. Enemy losses were undetermined. To the south the 8th Marine battalion attached to 2ID attacked enemy self-propelled artillery and engineer units northwest of Blythville. Enemy resistance was stubborn and no gains were reported after heavy fighting. Overall status of Sector 24 remains critical. Missouri salient defense forces risk being cut off from escape if the enemy is able to capitalize on gains west of Tiptonville. 2ID advises all units to the south of Kennet to be alert for tactical withdrawl orders. Developments, 23 July 1946 Sector 25 C2, British 36th ID advises 6th South Wales Border Infantry secured the town of Ridgeway from enemy armor and infantry at approximately 1009 hours. Friendly casualties were relatively light including the loss of 4 M3 Lee tanks from the 72nd Tank Battalion. To the south, the 60th Infantry Regiment backed up with tanks and tank destroyers defeated a small enemy force of comprised of armor and some infantry attempting to exploit a hole in the line 8 miles west of Peters Creek. Recon patrols advise sightings of large amounts of enemy artillery directly on the line and being used as direct fire support. The reasoning behind this doctrine is not yet apparent. 2ID C2 relays a possible shortage of Confederate armor forces local commanders to use 105 and 155mm guns in direct fire support against infantry. Local AAR reports describe the advantage of Confederate German-made armor over the M3, specifically the 7.5cm Kw.K mounted in the StuG III F. Initial reports document front turret armor penetration on the M3 at approximately 1000m, and superstructure penetration (frontal) at 1800m. Confederate doctrine attempts to capitalize on these advantages and allows the operation of StuG III's in small numbers, sometimes even deployed as individual vehicles. Local tactics to defeat these formidable armored vehicles involve "massing" attacks with a minimum of 4 tanks. Developments, 25 July 1946 Sector 24 0911 Hours: Emergency transmission from 2ID SHQ to SHAPNA. Message follows: 2ID SHQ received wireless transmission from HQ, 76th Mechanized Cavalary Co, coded HIGH INTEREST. Forward recon elements of the 49th Recon Company had made contact with German Waffen-SS forces in the town of Wilson, Arkansas. At approximately 0628 hours LP/OP personnel occupying the approaches to Wilson observed a large contigent of 8-wheeled armored cars and unidentified tracked vehicles entering the town from the south. The 49th attempted a tactical withdrawl from Wilson but was engaged by hostile fire. This unit was not a propaganda or military advisor detatchment typically assigned to a CSA division. The 49th reported positively identifying at least 18 SdKfz 234 model armored cars and at least 12 tracked infantry carriers of unknown design. This vehicle configuration suggests at least company strength. Markings on the vehicles indicated the 1st SS Panzer Division "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler". Reports of additional Waffen-SS forces were unconfirmed in the fighting following the tactical withdrawl from Wilson, but there are serious concerns of at least a regimental sized force approaching the Missouri Salient from the south. 4th Air Force Intelligence Update, 25 July 1946 1527 hours U.S. Forces North America issues the following Confederate aircraft identification profile of the FW-190 Model A-8 manufactured in the CSA under license from Germany. Confederate use of this aircraft is extensive in the bomber interceptor and ground attack roles. This aircraft is powered by a 2100hp BMW 801D-2 14 cylinder radial piston engine and has a maximum speed of 406 mph. This aircraft was used by Germany as a primary fighter from September 1941 until early 1945 when it was replaced by the FW TA 152 on front line service. Manufacturing of the A-8 continued for export and rights were sold to the CSA as early as November 1945. Manufacturing has been slow due to the complex design of this aircraft and exact numbers in present in CSA air fleets are unknown. More to follow. Developments, 26 July 1946 Sector 24 1127 hours: Emergency transmission from 2ID to SHAPNA. Message follows: At 0628 hours, HQ 76th Mechanized Cavalry Co confirmed the identification of SS Regiment Deutschland in combat north of Wilson, Arkansas. Elements of the 49th Recon battalion reported via wireless they were engaged with at least 2 mechanized SS infantry battalions and a heavy tank battalion approximately 9 miles north of Wilson and 6 miles west of Arkansas highway 43. The 49th advised of visual contact with enemy armor; a mixture of Panzer VI Model E "Tiger" heavy tanks and late model Panzer IV infantry support tanks. Enemy infantry was completely mechanized with mortar, towed AT gun, and a yet unknown model of tracked infantry carrier support. The 49th was ordered into a tactical withdrawl and has since lost wireless contact. 2ID reports the extreme vulnerability of the southern flank of the Missouri Salient from this deadly division. Blocking forces are inadequate for repelling a determined attack by this regiment. Please advise. End report, 1142 hours 2ID Combat Summary report, 26 July 1946 1711 hours Sector 24 continues to be the focus of heavy enemy offensive activity. The presence of SS Regiment Deutschland to the south of the Salient is of critical concern. The addition of Tiger Heavy tanks to the battlefield will completely outclass all US-built armor and all light and medium AT guns. 1st Army advises the release of 2 battalions of Soviet-made KV-1 heavy tanks from Sector 21 in an attempt to counter this extremely dangerous threat. The 1st MS Armored and 1st AL Infantry divisions continue to push into friendly lines in a two-pronged offensive west of Tiptonville and north of Blythville. On the northern pincer, local counterattacks by the 211th Mechanized Infantry and Assault Guns from the 2nd AG Battalion, 5th Armored have so far been unsuccessful and have resulted in heavy casualties and the loss of precious heavy armor from the 2nd Assault Gun battalion. On the southern pincer, Blythville was ordered torched and was evacuated by the 79th Infantry battalion after heavy enemy contact. Casualties have been excessive and damage to equipment is of great concern. To the north of St Francis several battalions of Arkansas State Militia have entered into US territory along the St Francis River. 2 battalions of infantry along with armor and AT support have been ordered into the area as a blocking force. This avenue is laced with rugged terrain; however should the enemy breech the terrain will result in the surrounding of the Missouri Salient. As of 1520 hours contact with only the Arkansa Militia has been confirmed, so this enemy incursion is suspected only as a probe. Developments, 26 July 1946 Sector 25 2ID SHQ reports continued pressure from the 2nd NC Infantry division to the immediate south and west of Ridgeway. Recon patrols report a heavy concentration of enemy armor (A-2F Battler, Panzer IIIN and 40M Nimrod) moving across the Ohio river to staging areas around Peters Creek. 2ID suspects further attacks westward and northward in an attempt to break out and capitalize on favorable terrain. The British 36th Infantry has been engaged in heavy contact with Confederate forces and has sustainted substantial losses. The enemy continues to reinforce holdings on the north side of the Ohio with no less than 4 supply routes (note red arrows on map). Repeated requests to 4th Air Force to destroy these bridges have been ignored. Enemy gains have brought the front line on a roughly northeast/southwest line from Bay City to 3 miles south of Glendale. Further Confederate attacks in the Glendale area are suspected. Developments, 26 July 1946 Sector 26 4ID SHQ reports moderate Confederate activity in this sector. Intelligence identified at least 2 full-strength divisions in this Sector; the 7th Arkansas and 10th Kansas Infantry divisions. Several battalions of I Corps assets are also suspected in the area including heavy artillery and anti-aircraft. The enemy continues to probe for additional crossing points both east and west of Owensboro with negligent success. Defensive positions remain strong in this sector with adequate reserve forces of both infantry and armor. Friendly casualties have been relatively light. 1st Army advises of the dispatch of 2 heavy armor and 1 Marine Airborne Infantry battalions to assist with defense and will be integrated into sector deployment in NLT 24 hours. Developments, 27 July 1946 Sector 24 2ID SHQ authorized the commencement of 2 seperate counterattacks in this sector in order to blunt Confederate advancement in the Missouri Salient. Intelligence reports enemy avenues of attack outlined with red arrows on the map. The 211th Mechanized Infantry Battalion spearheaded a local attack 6 miles west of the Tiptonville Breech against elements of the 1st Mississippi Armored Division. The 211th was supported with KV-I heavy tanks from the 1st Heavy Tank Battalion, 5th Armored Division. The attack began at 0530 hours and after heavy fighting was able to push back enemy armor at least 2 miles. US losses were relatively light. 211th C2 reports the destruction of at least 15 enemy tanks with a loss of 4 KV-Is. 2 of these suffered mechanical breakdowns and will be recovered. Developments, 27 July 1946 Sector 24 2ID SHQ reports the recapture of Blythville by the 79th Infantry Battalion at approximately 1411 hours. At 1600 hours, the 8th Marine Battalion led a counterattack into the positions held by armor from the 1st Alabama Infantry Division. Initial C2 reports indicate the attack was successful. Enemy losses are unconfirmed, but reportedly include the destruction of upwards of 20 tanks and assault guns. The advancement of 1st SS units from the Osceola area continues northward. 2ID SHQ has lost wireless contact with the 47th and 49th Recon companies as of 1820 on 26 July. At last report 3 full strength mechanized infantry battalions along with recon, motorized AT and heavy tank units were moving northward towards the Blythville area. SHQ has ordered all friendly forces south of Denton to stand by for immediate notification of tactical withdrawl. Counterattacks were ordered in two locations; immediately south of Ridgeway and 2 miles northwest of Rosiclare. The British 36th Infantry division spearheaded both attacks and report substantial losses with little or no gain against the enemy. Defensive lines continue to hold, although precariously. 4th Air Force Intelligence Update, 27 July 1946 2009 hours B-17E, B-26C and IL2 aircraft from the 467th Bomb group were ordered on a daylight raid to bomb airfields in and around the Memphis area. Mission depart time was 1200 hours. No fighter escort was available. At approximately 1445 hours, elements of the 390th Heavy Bomb wing broke radio silence to announce contact with German fighters at 36,000 feet 12 miles north of target. Initial fighter contact was reported as Confederate ME-109Gs, but there were at least 6 sightings of FW-190D-9 fighters in German markings. Additionally, there were unconfirmed reports of possible German-made jet aircraft responsible for the destruction of at least 3 B-17Es. Again, these are unconfirmed reports. SHAPNA Air Defense HQ forwards newly released information on an advanced model of German jet constructed be Messerschmitt and identified as the ME P1101. This aircraft was initially sighted in the USSR and has been confirmed in combat with the Soviet Air Force is early as March, 1946. Developments, 27 July 1946 Sector 24 At 1146 hours 2ID SHQ reports imminent collapse of the Missouri Salient from just north of Blythville northeast to Caruthersville. Strong enemy forces from the 1st Mississippi Armored and 1st Alabama Infantry Divisions have broken through defensive positions held by the 76th Mechanized Cavalry Company and 8th Marine Battalion 8 miles north of Blythville. 8th Marines reported heavy causalities under pressure from Confederate infantry supported by Nimrod Assault Guns. Wireless contact with advanced recon units from the 76th has been silent for several days, but there are intelligence reports from US partisan contacts that German units from LSSAH have reached Blythville. Confirmed sightings of Tiger IV Model "E" heavy tanks along with armored infantry, recon and possibly mobile AT vehicles have also been reported. All remaining units in wireless contact with SHQ have been ordered to withdraw to secondary defense positions as of 1500 hours. US Army Intelligence Memo 27 July 1946 1300 hours US partisan groups active in Tennesse have forwarded photographs of German heavy armored equipment moving north from rail yards in Memphis. This photograph was taken 24 July and shows Tiger Model "E" tanks. The vehicles were under heavy guard from both German and Confederate troops although no effort to conceal them with covering was apparent. Intelligence sources within the 1st Mississippi AD heavy support and repair depot report large amounts of German maintenance and support personnel arriving daily and the possible establishment of a dedicated German armored repair depotworking in tandem with Confederate personnel. These advisements suggest the long-term commitment of German forces to the Confederate war effort; to include divisional support. More details to follow as they become available. Developments, 27 July 1946 Sector 25 1st Army HQ authorized a local counterattack in Sector 25 beginning at 0400 hours on 27 July. These counterattacks were ordered to blunt a substantial probe by Confederate forces originating northwest of Peters Creek and east of Glendale. Enemy forces included armored elements of the 2nd North Carolina Infantry and 1st Georgia Armored Divisions. At approximately 0712 hours, British 36th Infantry Division, 9th Royal Sussex Infantry Battalion reported no gains after heavy enemy contact including Panzer IVH tanks and assault guns. At 1130 hours, British 36h Infantry HQ advised of the termination of the Ridgeway counterattack with no significant gain. Friendly casualties were estimated near 400 killed, missing or wounded. 3 miles to the west of Peters Creek the 46th Tank Destroyer battalion reported contact with Confederate German-made Marder II AT guns dug in and positioned in hull-down defense. Attempts to flank the guns were unsuccessful and a direct assault was ordered at 0923 hours under smoke cover. Enemy resistance was stiff however the guns were successfully eliminated by 1420 hours. The 46th reported of the confirmed destruction of 14 Marder II AT guns and 4 German-made SdKfz 251/22 model halftracks. Enemy dead were estimated around 100. Friendly losses included 4 M10, 3 M5 Stuart and approximately 120 men. To the east of Glendale, the 10th Gloucestershire Infantry reported heavy enemy contact with no gain. Friendly losses were estimated around 500. Overall the success of these local counterattacks were negligible. Enemy offensive operations continues to be strong in this Sector. Developments, 28 July 1946 Sector 24 Wireless transmissions from the 18th Infantry Regiment advise of the loss of Caruthersville. At 0801 hours screening elements of the 78th Infantry Battalion reported contact with Confederate Motorcycle Infantry from the 1st Alabama Infantry Division approaching from the southwest. The town was abandoned with no friendly losses. Approximately 3 hours later 3 companies from the 78th along with light tank and anti-tank support attacked suspected Confederate infantry 2 miles north of Highway 3. Enemy forces were engaged and pushed northeastward allowing the establishment 6 mile loose defensive line 4 miles west of Caruthersville. Friendly forces are ordered to disengage with Confederate and German units and move north and northeastward. No additional artillery support will be available. 10th Marine Battalion HQ advised of a combined counterattack against Confederate armor directly south of Fort Maine. 2nd Marines (light tanks), 50th Infantry Battalion and 2nd Assault Gun Battalion provided support for the attack. Enemy resistance was extremely determined. Inital casualty reports detail the loss of around 300 men, 14 T-70 light tanks, 22 SU-85 Assault Guns and 3 M2A1 Medium Tanks. 4th Army Intelligence Memo 28 July 1946 Partnership in military production and doctrine between the Confederacy and Germany have existed since the middle 1930s. In 1935 CSA President Coolidge and German Chancellor Hitler signed the "Northern Hemisphere Defense Pact" which has become the foundation of the current military exchange program between these two countries. CSA military production builds on proven, battle-worthy examples built by Germany which are purchased and manufactured under license in Confederate factories. It is a known fact as late as 1944 Confederate manufacturing merely copied German models and pressed them into service with no changes in nomenclature or model number. This practice changed with the promotion of Dwight Eisenhower to the top general in the Confederate War Department. Acknowledging the steadfast performance of this "copied" equipment, he sought to build on these designs and make them "uniquely Confederate". This has been a gradual change implemented on the Confederate military establishment and as of the start of hostilities has not yet filtered out to all front line units. Developments, 28 July 1946 Sector 25 2ID SHQ reports heavy fighting between the 36th Infantry Division and 1st Georgia Armored and 2nd North Carolina Infantry Division south of Ridgeway. The 36th advises of the annihilation of the 2nd Royal Welch Fusiliers Battalion in fierce combat with the 112th North Carolina Infantry Regiment supported by at least 2 companies of Assault Guns and possibly 3 companies of tanks. The Battalion fought bravely but was overwhelmed when enemy armor supported a counterattack through previously captured Confederate embattlements 1 mile south of the city. Overall success of the offensive was positive however with the confirmed destruction of at least 20 Panzer IIIN and 10 A-2F Battler medium tanks, 12 Nimrod Assault Guns and at least 200 confirmed enemy dead. Losses to friendly armor included 6 M-10 and 5 M-18 Tank Destroyers, 4 M3 medium tanks and 10 M5 light tanks. Friendly casualties numbered near 700. Developments, 29 July 1946 Sector 24 At approximately 0340 hours, recon patrols from Fort Washington NE of Arbyrd report the advance of Confederate militia tanks. The enemy was estimated at battalion strength with at least 20 Panzer IIB and several Mark V tanks. Infantry strength was undetermined. The situation remains serious to the SE of Denton. The enemy continues to advance on a northerly axis from Blythville despite attempts to counterattack by the 76th Mechanized Cavalry, 18th Infantry Regiment and 8th Marine Battalion. Intense pressure from the 1st SS and 1st Alabama Infantry Division have routed resupply attempts to besieged friendly units and there are widespread reports of a disorganized retreat. 2ID SHQ advises of the imminent total collapse of this area within 24 - 48 hours. Fallback positions will be secondary defense lines starting at Kennet and moving in a NE line towards New Madrid. A substantial counterattack was initiated by US Marines with armor and artillery support North of Caruthersville. Enemy resistance was determined, but Marine T-70 and M2A1 Medium tanks along with infantry support were able to push back a sizeable enemy armor force from the 1 Mississippi Armored Division. Destroyed Confederate Panzer IIIN tanks were estimated around 20, with a loss of only 10 T-70s. Heavy artillery support from Kennet defense lines were credited with making the attacks successful. On the Tiptonville highway, KV-1 heavy tanks from the 5th Armored, 1st Heavy Tank battalion along with SU-76 assault guns and infantry support recaptured 2 miles of highway and destroyed 30 Confederate tanks. Friendly infantry losses were estimated at less than 75. Battalion and Division HQ's advise Soviet Lend-Lease equipment is holding up well to enemy actions and despite mechanical and design weaknesses, are generally well-liked by their crews. 100mm thickness on the cast turret deflect enemy AT rounds up to and including 50mm from 2 miles to point-blank range. The ZIS-5 76.2mm Gun is able to defeat enemy armor on Panzer III and Battler series at an average distance of 1500ft, but have been reported effective up to 1.5 miles. More detailed information on Lead-Lease equipment in use by 1st Army will be summarized at a later date. Developments, 29 July 1946 Sector 25 Headquarters, British 36th Infantry Division requested and were granted a 24-hour rest/refit period after sustaining heavy losses from multiple counterattacks over the course of the past 3 days. The situation south of Ridgeway remains serious but seems to have stabilized in the last 12 hours. Elements of the Confederate 2nd North Carolina Infantry division continue to resupply via a pontoon bridge south of Peter's Creek despite numerous attempts by bomber from 4th Air Force to destroy it. The 60th Infantry Regiment continues to hold a line of defense along Missouri Highway 24 linking Rosiclare to Ridgeway. Developments around Glendale remain troubling. Armor and possibly armored infantry from the 1st Georgia Armored Division continue to come across the Ohio River at Bay City, and are moving north along Missouri Highway 112 to staging areas just south of the city. A local counterattack by the 64th Tank Battalion was successful in pushing back a weak armored force on Highway 24 west of Rosiclare, but it is doubtful this ground can be held in the face of a reinforced enemy advance. Defensive lines around this area are seriously weak. 2ID HQ in Bloomfield advise there are concerns a determined breakout could be repelled. Reinforcements are requested - at least division strength - in order to guarantee holding this vital area and avoid a breakout into the plains. Please advise. Developments, 30 July 1946 Sector 24 Enemy activity continues to be active in this sector, although recent movements by Confederate and German amount to probes only and not determined offensives. 1st SS continues to be the primary threat to the south, along with tanks and assault guns of the 1st Mississippi Armored Division to the north of Caruthersville. To the west of St. Francis, Arkansas Militia initiated probe attacks against tanks and infantry of the Missouri National Guard in the heavily wooded Ozark area. While troubling, this attack does not appear to be decisive in nature. Missouri National Guard HQ reports of the destruction of at least 1, possibly 2 Militia battalions and the capture of over 200 enemy soldiers. 10th Marines report initiating another strong counterattack against Confederate tanks of the 1st Mississippi Armored Division along Highway 12. The 2nd Marine tank battalion reported heavy engagement with A2-F Battler and Panzer IIIN tanks; attempts to outflank enemy forces failed. The attack was called off at approximately 1129 hours with the loss of 12 friendly tanks and 67 men. - BREAK - Wireless reports just in from the 18th Infantry Regiment report a possible breakout of partially encircled friendly forces 1 mile SE of Denton. Friendly losses were heavy, but at least a battalion-sized element was able to push Northwest towards secondary defense lines. Enemy losses were unknown. Developments, 30 July 1946 Sector 25 British 36th Infantry resumed attacks on armor and infantry from the 1st Georgia Armored Division immediately south of Ridgeway. Fighting was heavy and continued throughout the day with unconfirmed reports of at least 30 enemy tanks destroyed. 36th HQ reports the 1st Royal Scott Battalion advanced at least 1 mile beyond enemy lines after an intense artillery barrage and with the support of M3 Lee tanks of A Company, 72nd Tank Battalion. This gain was negated later in the day after at least 6 Lee's were destroyed by A2-F Battlers. Losses to British units were also heavy with the confirmed deaths of at least 200 men. Along Highway 112 north of Bay City an attack was launched by the 52nd Infantry Regiment supported by tanks and 90mm AA guns from the 361st AA Company. Confederate losses were heavy with the confirmed destruction of 10 halftracks, several guns and at least 100 men. Developments, 30 July 1946 Sector 26 2ID SHQ advises of a significant victory against a primary Confederate bridgehead some 20 miles south of Boonville. The attack, led by the 64th Infantry Regiment and supported by KV-1 Heavy Tanks from the 5th Armored, 4th Heavy Tank Battalion, broke through enemy defenses and wiped out enemy forces attempting to defend the bridgehead. Friendly losses were light. Enemy losses include 16 tracked bridge carriers of unknown make, 7 amphibious ferries (these appear to be of German design), 3 75mm AT guns, 15 81mm mortars, 16 GMC light armored trucks and over 400 men. The 64th reported securing the bridgehead and was ordered to stop on the north bank of the Ohio River. This is a significant victory and relieves a great amount of pressure to Evansville.
