Vampir -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/15/2008 7:29:26 PM)

Yeah... [:D] I'm not too original... "Vampir" has been my nickname since my days at escorts work...(some ten years ago) [:)]

NormS3 -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/15/2008 8:29:56 PM)

congratulations!

I am Norm son of Norm son of Norm, myself.

Steenstra is my last name and I am happily addicted to Witp since 2003. Being in WV, bad internet connections caused me to be hesitant to join the forum initially. But my adopted state is moving into the 20th century, with the occassional surge into the 21st.

Congrats again!

Menser -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/15/2008 9:17:27 PM)

Alikchi2 -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/16/2008 1:56:40 AM)

Alikchi is the Choctaw word for medicine man or shaman. I'm descended from this guy - my middle name is Pitchlynn - and he has been called the last of the Alikchi.

b52 gunner -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/16/2008 2:42:20 AM)

B-52 Gunner, It's my position and callsign on the aircraft, and what I flew in Vietnam in 72 & 73.

Cool! Where did you fly out of? What model Buff? B-52d? [:)]

b52 gunner -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/17/2008 11:11:06 PM)

I flew D's, F's & G models. Trained on F models at Castle AFB, in 71 went to Anderson AFB Guam in 72 (Bullet Shot) Flew 93 mission in Vietnam in G models including 4 up north during Linebacker II in Dec 72. Our last combat mission was over Cambodia in June of 73? not sure about the date. Went back to my home base in Aug. 73. Went Back to UTapao in 75 in D models. Stayed in D models untill I got out in 78.  I prefered the tall tails over the G & H models.

AW1Steve -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/17/2008 11:44:42 PM)

There is a B-52D on display at the Arc Light memorial at Anderson AFB, painted in Vietnam era colors. I've always thought it a much prettier and cleaner aircraft than the later models (the "warts" on the nose are really disfiguring). I bet you've got some tremendous stories to tell. [:)]

Sardaukar -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/18/2008 12:20:28 AM)

Got my nickname during my military service, often seen reading Frank Herbert's Dune during those long hours of wait (aka "duty"). [8D]

b52 gunner -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/18/2008 12:26:31 AM)

I know, I was there when they put it on display. A year after it was put up they held a rememberence at the memorial. The 60 BS stood in formation if front of the aircraft that day, for the B-52 crewman that did not come back. I was part of that formation. Anderson was my last duty station.

b52 gunner -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/18/2008 12:33:58 AM)

The warts you refer to that are part of the G & H models are part of what was refered to as a phase vi modification. That happened about 1975. They installed a new generation ECM and warning receivers during that modification. They also cut the fusalage just behind the tail and added an extra 40" so all the new equipment could be fitted. By 1975 the alt 6b ecm jammers that we were using were becoming dated. We couldn't keep up with the ECM and radars on the new airframes coming in. F-15's & 16's they were eating our lunch in training exercises. The phase vi mods brought us back to parity. The two dimples underneath the nose are a low light TV and IR for low level navigation.

ChickenOfTheSea -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/18/2008 12:39:33 AM)

I am a geezer, first child of two WWII vets, both involved in the Pacific War. Many of my childhood friends were also descendents of war vets and it was always a topic of interest to us in games and conversation.

I have forgotten the circumstances, but one of my friends made up a song about me which included

"He thought he was the Tiger of the Pacific,
But he was the Chicken of the Sea."

For the non-Americans in the forum "Chicken of the Sea" is a brand of canned tuna. The vicious chicken in my avatar came from an article about the role of the Polynesians in the domestication of the chicken. I also think it looks a bit like an 18th century British Admiral.

What part of Virginia do you hail from?

ChickenOfTheSea -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/18/2008 1:21:17 AM)

Richmond. Been here since 1995. Also government nomad. As adult Nebraska - Florida - North Carolina - Oklahoma - Nebraska - Louisiana - Nebraska - Virginia.

AW1Steve -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/18/2008 1:22:58 AM)

Oh , so your only about an hour south of me. One of these days we need to arange a Northern Virginia WitP sumit! [:)]

ChickenOfTheSea -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/18/2008 1:30:58 AM)

Sounds good, but I would say an hour between Richmond and Alexandria is optimistic these days. For a kid that grew up in Nebraska the traffic in northern Virginia is like a trip to the dentist. For us Nebraskans, if you are driving and you can see another car, its just too crowded. I do travel to DC at least a couple of times a year, though.

stldiver -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/18/2008 3:55:57 AM)

Blackhorse -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/18/2008 5:29:53 PM)

Blackhorse = Nickname of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in which I served during the Cold War days.

Avatar = same regiment

Quote = from Donald Sutherland's character in the movie Kellys Heros -- the tank commander Sgt. Oddball, who was my inspiration to become a tanker myself.

tc464 -> RE: So whats your log-in all about? (10/18/2008 6:11:55 PM)

tc = my initials; 464 is the old USAF specialty code for EOD

The avatar is the actual badge.

It goes back to 1989 on the internet. I went to a conference at Xerox PARC, people were exchanging e-mail addresses, and I was asked mine. When I got back, I addressed the obvious deficiency. Here's my sig from 1990.

A ten-line sig is well over the top today--it reflects the complexity of e-mail at the time. Having an e-mail address was also a status symbol in the industry.
