Since my honorable opponent has decided to start an AAR I've decided to post one as well. Probably better b/c now we wont have to talk to each other as much after every turn and give away little pieces of intel which we always seem to do![X(] But heck what are friends for! Oh who'm I kidding will still talk if for no other reason then to try to goad each other into stupid decisions! Since we've decided to stay out of each others AARs I'll try to explain my strategic thought and vision. This way you can better critique me![:D] We've been screwing around with the Coral Sea scenario for a LONG time even played Feinders Midway Scenario (I think its yours?) and then moved up to the Guadalcanal scenario, this is our 1st time with the Big Boy Map! While it makes life a whole lot more complicated I have to tell you I'm loving it. I'm playing as Japan but w/o the WitP decoder. I may try it soon, but wanted to see how I handle things w/o it ...yeah I'm a glutton for punnishment. (Also I'm a computer half-literate so I'm hoping its easy to download and use). Ok I'll put my intial strateguc thoughts in my next post!

Hi, good luck ! I use WITPDecoder, wouldn't go to war without it (not for it's strategic use, but for its production info) ... also have a DB which feeds off the CSV files for more info ... but then I have time to burn some days ... if you're playing a limited scenario, then maybe you don't need it, but if its the whole war ... go get it and use it. I divided my thoughts in to different areas of Concentration. CHINA To maintain the status-quo in most areas and attempt to capture and/or involve most the Chinese forces in combats around HONAN & CHANGSHA. Also I was hoping to use superior numbers of OSCARS and bombers to limit the effectiveness of the AVG. INDIA/BURMA While at first I was tempted to focus my attention here and launch a major amphibious assault into India, I decided to slow my roll here. If I can restrict the use of his forward air bases I should be able to return to the India front and re-visit the idea of using the Imperial Guards Division in Medan to invade India. PORT MORESBY Since this was where the Japanese were actually planning to invade in May of 1942, I decided to make this my focal point. I earmarked 2 Mixed Brigades, 1 SNLF, & 1 HQ from RABAUL as well as an Infantry Division in Java, as my invasion force. To assist with this invasion I intended to Para-drop onto THURSDAY ISLAND on the 1st turn. I was hoping to use Thursday Island as an Air Base to provide fighter cover for my invasion forces. I also wanted to deny him a forward air base from which he could LRCAP Pt. Moresby and quickly refit his fighter squadrons at. Additionally I thought it might distract him and trigger a counter invasion, which would keep troops and supplies from going to Pt. Moresby. To support my operations I transfered a significant elements of my Naval Air Forces to this sector. By May 2nd I would have 108 Betty's, 36 Nells, and 50+ A6M2 Zeros were based at RABAUL; two Sentais of A6M2 Zeros were also based at LAE. ok thats a start more tomorrow

SOUTH PACIFIC My main idea was to wait in the South Pacific until I had captured Port Moresby, Gili Gili, Lunga and probably Luganville and then expand into that area. But Id ecided to use Paratroopers to take WALLIS ISLAND from him. It has a good size air base, and looked like a good place to base a Sentai of Betty/Nell Bombers, along with some fighter support (convert some CLAUDES to A6M2's and either hop'em there or use a CVE to "bounce'em" there). Sending a small TF to load the BF from MAKIN and bring it there Full Speed and another small TF with some supply from Kwaj. I felt I could use WALLIS to attrition any Carrier force that might come to assist the fighting in the South Pacific. CENTRAL PACIFIC The idea was to make him think I was planning to invade MIDWAY. The AKAGI, KAGA, & RYUJO would raid the island for a couple of turns then head south to support my activites there. The 14" BB (YAMASHIRO, FUSO, HYUGA, & ISE would pass close to Midway then turn North and head for the Aleutians) Additionally I started the game with 2 SNLFs (90 AV each), an Inf Bge in Palau, and several NLF units planning for MIDWAY. Figuring if he got SIGINT on one of them it might be a little mis-direction and then also if I ever do want to go after MIDWAY.....well that Brigade @ Palau.... I also increased my Air Strength at KWAJALEIN to over 60 BETTY/NELLS to give me a considerable sting if he ventured to far from home. Additionally I begain expanding the air base @ WAKE and sent additional troops there.

OK it seems I only left over two areas of concern: NORTH AREA/The Aleutians I intend to invade ATTU & then KISKA basically with a couple of APDs worth of troops, protected by the SORYU & HIRYU. Then load up the 7th Infantry Division and attempt to take DUTCH HARBOR. I'm going to load a Base Force at Tokyo and bring that to Attu asap so I can get some aircraft MAVIS' for recon in addition to the typical sentai of BETTY?NELL bombers and a sentai of A6M2's. I also intend to take ADAK ISLAND and transfer a Sentai of OSACARS trhere during the battle for DUTCH HARBOR. I will be sending several Glen carrying subs in the area between Pearl and Dutch Harbor to act as a trip wire ...an early alert system for my 2nd Carrier Diviision. If I detect his carriers (Enterprise, Hornet, Saratoga) I plan on withdrawing back towards ATTU under my Air Umbrela and draw them in to BETTY/NELL torpedo range! Also I can always reinforce the Northern Fleet with the JUNYO or the CVEs in Tokyo. AUSTRALIA As Port Moresby is being secured, assets will be put in to place for an invasion of Northern Australia. I plan on bringing sveral on the Tank Regiments that begin the game near China as well as the 2 Divisions and 1 brigade from the Phillipines in to this operation. Paratroppers will be used in conjunction with amphiubious assaults. I plan to jump both in to bases and behind them to cut off their supply lines to the rest of Australia. I feel I can do this with out risking major naval units. Depending on situations I might earmark either the JUNYO to cover these invasions or a mini-KB of the SHOHO, ZUIHO, & RYUJO; supported by several cruisers. SInce the NAGATO & MUTSU will be in the area supporting the Port Moresby Operations, they maybe available for bombardment missions as well.

I forgot to cancel the raid on Imphal and it cost me several planes. My 22 OSCARS did not make a dent in his 17 Hurricane IIs!! Once more my planes @ Rabaul refuse to strike any Allied TF-even if it is spotted. His Cruiser force which again bombarded Thursday Island was spotted early in the turn right next to it and-no strikes! Thursday Island is running very low on supply-under 100 now. A US TF with a RCT was unspotted last turn by the SORYU & HIRYU @ Attu and began to unload. (I was sitting 2 hexes west of Attu w/20% Vals searching plus several Float planes!) They unloaded enough force to destroy my APD launch invasion force. Since I only had a few squads of SNLF w/several support squads & guns I’m guessing that the SNLF squads were the ones lost[disrupted] on landing and everyone else was destroyed w/o a formal combat. Well that was probably a stupid and rash move and I paid for. I though that with the MAVIS' @Paramushio, my Subs, and my carrier planes I'd find his ships trying to transport troopos into Attu. While I have been flying a bit by the seat of my pants, I can not believe the lousy luck I am having in failing to spot his TF’s as well as in my planes @ Rabaul just not striking when they haven’t taken large loses or been over used! He did a great job getting reinforcements into both Lunga & Gili Gili, but that's just going to force me to improvise...which isn't a big problem....except up in the Aleutians!

TURN NOTES: Well the US Subs made their presence known today, and even in shallow water I was unable to do much against them. A transport TF knew where a sub was and still lost an AK to it (Off Kyushu). A little confused about his attack @ Lunga. The 5th SNLF should have had an AV of 40+. The guys already there had an AV of 15 and the guys unloading were at 27! But I guess I lost a bunch of guys unloading (141) and lost a lot of effectiveness to disruption + maybe the sub attack added to the disruption (only claimed to have killed 30 men). Anyway I thought I could keep my toe hold for another turn till the other SNLF arrived. Now I think I’ll have to use the AP’s involved in the invasion to ferry the KURE 5th SNLF back to Lunga after the other SNLF lands. Lost alot of men attacking ICHANG, w/o any gain. Maybe the results will improve next deliberate attack. My “trap” for the AVG would have been perfect if weather had canceled all flight operations in Burma! Although bad weather foiled my planes to raid Midway I’m hoping my 2 day presence in the area has drawn enough attention to the Central Pacific! My air attacks against Pt. Moresby both worked well (even though the Rabaul strike came in unescorted-yesh). Probably should transfer another squadron of Army Bombers to New Guinea soon. They are much more effective against the air field then the BETTYs and NELLs. All though logical they should be, they carry twice the bombload. The 1st wave of troops hit Gili Gili uninterrupted by Allied Air and will attack tomorrow. The SNLF will be joined by a large Naval Guard Unit (70 AV). This plus the supplies and aerial-bombardments should be enough. (Also assigned 2 CL to bombard – The Furutaka Group Cruiser TF is standing by as well). My raid/ “trap” vs. the AVG also finally worked after being grounded for 2 days by bad weather. He sent the majority of his planes against Lashio, where all OSCARS were grounded due to the weather (but he could fly there?). Anyway my Zeros and Nells from Rangoon hit Kunming hard, even though 17 turned and fled during the air-to-air combat which I dominated (But the SALLY’s from Mandalay and OSCARs from Lashio were still grounded). Still wondering how to handle the 2nd Carrier Division....may have to return to base. I really dont want to have to abort the DUTCH HARBOR Operation, but the longer it takes to gain control of Attu, the greater the risk of a counter strike I run. As I said I was very disappointed with my Naval Bombardments of both Dutch Harbor and Port Moresby, but very happy with the results of my aerial bombardments of Port Moresby. I am refueling Nagumo's carriersjust north of Tulagi, within striking distance in case he reinforces Lunga (again). The 3rd & 5th Carrier Divisions have moved in to a position to cover the Port Moresby invasion force. The CVLs have transfered their KATES to Shortlands and are loaded with nothing but Zeros! These extra 'squadrons' plus the RUFES from Gili Gili are preforming LRCAP over my invasion TF with the 65th & 21st Brigades. The Kure SNLF and more supply will follow and then the 8th Area Army HQ and more supply will arrive all from Rabaul. The 2nd Infantry Division is also on its way from Java!

My BETTYs actually struck some of the Cruisers leaving Thursday Island, but I lost too many damaged for just 1 torpedo hit. My subs are starting to take a beating. Having trouble launching a Recon GLEN over Pearl. LUNGA/Guadalcanal is a damn mess! I'm just gping to go ahead with my other plans and let his troops sit there. He has no Air Base so frack'em. Problem is now I fear for the Dutch Harbor Invasion after all the delays taking ATTU. He has to know something is “a foot”. I may just have to call that off.

Looks like I got a bad set of rolls at Pt. Moresby. The results where very surprising, considering the fact that I had reduced the Fortifications one level last turn. They penetrated my Sub & Glen screen and avoided my Kiska based MAVIS’ as well as my BETTY's @ ATTU, and surprised the invasion force @ DUTCH HARBOR. But it Looks like the SORYU & HIRYU badly damaged the ENTERPRISE.BANZAI!! BANZAI!! BANZAI!! They also took out an AA gun on the SARATOGA (which is probably other wise fine) and may have put a small hit on the HORNET. I believe that the Enterprise is out of flight action, but that both the Hornet & Saratoga are both capable of continuing flight operations at this time. I may have a situation in that I have only 10 operational KATES on both Carriers, the SORYU has 7 listed as damaged and the HIRYU another 6 damged. I'm going to transfer some carrier capable ZEROS from KISKA to the the Carriers to supplement. I know that adds operational loses, but the 2nd Carrier Division was the only group not involved in that practice so far. My first attack @ Dutch Harbor was shockingly bad. I had previously seen in his bombardment attacks that he had moved in elements of a RCT, but they were not the reason for my bad attack. Perhaps I should have waited till the Division was entirely unloaded before attempting my attack. I may need to bring the 2 Fast BBs back even they are both slightly damged around 12-15 sys damage each for another bombardment attack. The 3rd Carrier Division battered many APs moving into Efate, probably carrying much of the 24th Infantry Division which he used to retake Wallis Island. It also seems he has transferred both of his B-17 groups to Noumea from Australia. My SNLF working w/my Paras took Ndidni this turn. I will quickly transfer a Sentai of A6M2 Zeros there to provide additional air cover for the Luganville Invasion. Looks like Floyd my have a Surface TF of Many Cruisers and maybe even a couple of BB (?) moving west to the New Hebrides. It’s ok Rear Admiral Tanaka is in the area! ( Tanaka has 2 Fast BB plus at least 4 heavy cruisers and 2 light cuisers under his command) Pt. Moresby fortifications reduced another level to 1, as the 2nd Division troops join the attack!

The SORYU & HIRYU spot the US Carriers 1st and React towards them moving from 5 to 4 hexes away. I spot him 1st, my VALs & KATEs are actually in range @ 5 hexes albeit extended, but yet we don’t strike after we React? Now the US CVs didn’t move…why did we move towards them if we weren’t going to strike? Makes no freaking sense to me. Maybe I’m crying, but come on why react towards them if you’re not planning to launch a strike! Well not only do we not launch a strike, but he hits me multiple times (5 I think) before my strike even gets to him. The SORYU got hit hard 60 system damage, while the HIRYU is just barely capable of flight operations w/combined damage total of 48. Floyd did smartly put a group of P-39’s on LRCAP from Kodiak Island over his carriers and that helped him a great deal. The Good News this turn was we captured PORT MORESBY!!!BANZAI!! BANZAI!! BANZAI!! Capturing over 22,000 Allied troops!

Coach If you are saying that your carriers did not launch in the morning phase and the Allied ones did, then yes that's pretty crappy luck. If the complaint is that you both launched in the morning or both launched in the afternoon (no morning attack is probably due to either you or he being under clouds. If either you or your naval target is being rained on, then you can't launch against it), but his strike arrived first, then don't feel hard done to. The computer simply works things out in that order. There is no advantage gained as all the strike planes are in the air at the same time.

YAKFACE #1 THANKS FOR THE COMMENTS! [&o] I think that is what happened. Plus not all of my KATES which were operational went out on the strike; and no I did not have any KATES assigned to NAVAL SEARCH. I think 15/23 operational KATES flew to attack 3 spotted American carriers to whom we had just reacted to....just doesn't make sense to me. Just seemed like I had rotten luck in that whole sequence; considering only half of my available VALS struck. Now if you want to argue that they were set to a 20% Naval Search - that would be 6 searching and 24 striking, but only 15 flew the mission! So out of 53 total attack aircraft, only 30 launched! [&:] Ok hopefully I'll have better luck latter....I still love the game! (Even if it is cheating for the Americans-[;)])

The previous days had reported 4 and 5 Battleships in a TF in that area and I thought that, that # might have been high! TANAKA is unbelievable! He is one aggressive S.O.B. He extracts HIS Task Force FROM THIS “AMBUSH” BUT STILL BOMBARDS Luganville. Didn’t get many torpedo hits for the # of torpedoes I fired…so much for the great Long Lance torpedoes! But overall I was lucky that I didn't get pounded worse. Unfortunately my Carrier planes (from the SHOHO & ZUIHO) did not strike his wounded ships which where closer then the TF they attacked, and their 250kg bombs at long range seemed to bounce off the deck armor when they did hit. My bombardment of Thursday Island has removed it as I threat and I can continue concentrating on OZ. I forgot to take the 1st Carrier Division off Refuel OK, so they are refueling on the journey north every day…arrrghh! (well, that ends now) Floyd will probably spot them off Midway this turn. Who knows he may have spotted the CS TF- I had there for a couple of turns and thought that was a carrier….I mean we did Recon Midway twice! With a little luck Nagumo might catch the wounded Enterprise and Saratoga traveling south to Pearl, or arrive in time to secure Dutch Harbor when the SNLF, Artry, & Naval Infantry arrive in a week. If he doesn’t move any more infantry there from Anchorage or the West Coast. Have to decide if I want my 2 SNLFs to attempt to take Lunga by themselves’ or if I want them to wait for the Army Units coming from the Philippines. My attacks from China in open ground are continuing to be successful, so I will continue those when they appear-targets of opportunity. My Air Raids in Northern Australian are becoming less and less effective which is beginning to concern me.
