Hi Fishbed.
after what happened with my latest request to not to use paras on a non-dot/base hex in China...i decided to stop complaining and, above all, to stop asking him anymore.
It's clear that he "reads" these requests on mine as a whining childish request "you're kicking my butt, i don't like to lose, so i ask you to stop winning or i do quit"...something like that. Well, i hate to be pedant and i hate to appear a whiner, even if i do believe that i have, at least, some reasons to complain.
So my policy now is: simply stop asking and accept this state of things...and rely on his feelings of fairplay and justice. I'll stick my behaviour on what i do feel fair and won't retaliate acting in the same way.
Above all...i'm having lot of fun playing this match, so i fear that, asking too much, would break this "toy"

And above all, you can use his "tactic" against him in the future if you will want to.. Many of those nasty tricks can be used by both sides.. Pandoras box is open.. You are on the receiving end now, but it´s going to change soon. You will get more and more toys to play with.

Unfortunately I bet Trots quits as soon as he has maxed out his offensive.

A bad day.
...another false attack at Karachi and Manila...result? Karachi's garrison moved from 15,000 to 17,500 supplies needed each month...same for Manila...
In China a useless para drop at Kweijan stopped every movement of my army which was almost arrived in the jap hex N-E of it...now i'll have to run westwards...but i bet his 37 units will enter at Kweiyang before i can move away and so will be able to succesfully attack me again.....the land combat system is really a pain

Heehee...see my banner!

I know Ron...what i hate is that i cannot fight with the same means...no paras to be used in China, no tanks to pursue the enemy...
Ok, gotta live with it....sometimes witp gives me more headhaces than a pile of complaining and screaming GFs....[:D]

in your case we can´t blame WITP but your opponent. You can´t make a game jerk prove... [8|]

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/30/42
The KB is moving westwards, back to the safe waters south of Truk...this raid was a real insuccess for him i'd say.He just killed 12 of my fighters in a sweep, losing 7 zeros...nothing else achieved...Today our Conrados spotted, attacked and sunk another I-class Jap sub. (I-28)...during these days in the Marshalls Japan has lost some 6/7 subs...not bad!At Karachi today he bombed the hell out of it...both by sea and by air...while at Manila the "false attacks" go on and the results are clear...from 25,000 of Adjusted AV of last week, noe our adj.AV is 17,500...[:@]One of our sub operating from Darwin ("S" class) finally managed to interdict one of his supply convoys that go from Java to Japan...[:D]In China...well...i let you see with your own eyes how many planes he's using against my poor guys at Kweiyang...--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the first stages of the war i've managed to move every single unit in the PI to Luzon,using single AKs, Catalinas and subs

I actually had to swallow the somewhat sarcastic comment which came up to my mind first of all. It had something to do with deliberate use of small unit suicide attacks and their effects. But as this is fine with GH, so shall it be with me.

But more on topic/strategywise: Is that a relevant question ? (This is a real question, I am aware of your achievements from your speed and fury AAR, so I hope I can learn something). I believe you are not after the exact number of available supply and rate of consumption (or are you ?), but rather try to point out a disadvantage of this approach in a polite way.

But on the other hand, what are the available options:

a) having the troops chopped up piecemeal - possibly supplied better if distributed, but the total supply needed is identical - or is it not ?

b) concentrating them as GH did and see what happens.

c) evacuation ??? I am not really familiar with the scenario they are playing, but I guess evacuation is not possible, as PPs are insufficient and probably spent better in different areas, plus if the sealanes to ship supplies in are too dangerous, this will also be true for the way out.

Thus, what is the alternative strategy you would suggest, avoiding supply problems plus making better use of the troops ?

Thanks for your input.

Hartwig

hades1001 -> RE: 3 bombs on the KB! (3/3/2008 4:40:15 AM)

hi,

Hartwig, glad to hear that you read my AAR time to time. Thanks for that.

I asked General the question because I know there is no way to supply so many troops in Manlia. Unless, you managed to tranport some supplies from other bases in DEI. Thiat can't be much, let's say more than 50,000 supplies. If you managed to send let's say more than 30,000 supplies to PHI, your Japanese opponent is probably not a good one. because he owns the superiority in both air and naval force, your little transportation mission could be end easily. So this is just can't happen.

Then let's talk about the more "normal" situation: you DIDN't send much supplies to PHI.

If you can keep all the bases with some resources, you can supply all your troops in PHI well, or may be even some more from nearby islands.

PHI will be lost for sure in the beginning of the war, the only thing matters is how much price your Japanese opponent payed to capture Manlia.

The right strategy for allies from my perspective, is to defend Clark Field with most of your troops, let's say about 1,000 assult value, and put the rest about 500 AVs in Manlia. Then, you are all set in PHI. Japan get no other choice but to move as many troops as they can to invade PHI, probably the whole southern army. If Clark falls, simply move all your troops back to Manlia, pray for your opponent to shock attack Manlia. If he did so, congratulations, you did a great job in PHI and at least delay the attack of japan for two monthes, even more, bacause his divs need rest after the bloody battle.

I do suggest to evacuate the 4th USMC Rgt, 2 tank bn, the fleet HQ and several combat engineer rgt before Manlia falls. If you can't fully pull them out, at least the seeds.

For the Japan side, I think the right strategy is to push the USAFEE troops back to Manlia, use tricks to avoid bloody battles if you can, don't leave the allies any resource produce bases, leave half of the AV troops against the Allies in Manlia at the begin, and seige the city for monthes. You can pull some troops out once you see the AVs in Manlia drops, which mean the allies has run out of supplies. Do as much bombing as you can, if you have extra bombers, that helps to burn the supplies. But I don't like some troops suicide attack, that's works but just don't like it.

What I did in my last game I seige Manlia for half a year and captured it with one Bde and some SNLFs eventually. The allies in Manlia will starving to death. You saved a lot of energy for other campaigns.

Hi HAdes,

if you look at the story in this AAR you'll see that i've defended as long as i could all the resources centers in Luzon! I've had to abbandon everything but Manila when he understood what was my game and brought 3500 AVs both at Naga and at Legaspi, so he managed to push me back. i've fallen back to Manila just before he could defeat me at Clark Fields. I also managed to bring 30,000 supplies at Manila...unluckly the constant bombings of the last months and these single-unit-attacks managed to burn most of them. Now i barely have 5,300 supplies left...[:o]

Yes but remember G.H., it is now June and Manila still holds!

Time is against the Japanese and from this point onwards you are going to grow ever stronger. The longer Manila holds the less Japan can accomplish elsewhere with those forces.

As to having as much AV in one hex as possible, remember guys, once supplies are gone your units defend at 25% strength. So the larger your force size, the more AV Japan needs to bring in order to ultimately overcome it.

Had G.H. only had half of the PI land armies in Manila right now, there’d be another 2,000 – 3,000 Japanese AV marching through China or somewhere else instead of besieging Manila.

It’s all going to die eventually, making it last as long as possible is the key strategy in the PI’’s.

Theoretically an out of supply army could last for years if its initial AV is large enough. Once supplies are gone equipment begins to get damaged and destroyed, but as long as the 25% AV is too large to overcome and force the combat code into a surrender routine, that force could hold out until disablements reduced that core AV enough to allow an attacker to overcome it.

With 2,700+ AV at Manila, G.H.’s force will defend at about 675 AV before other mods are applied once supplies dry up. That’s going to be a lot tougher to take out than the 1100 or so AV I had at Manila in my game. Troll may not have enough force there to take it down currently since a lot of those allied troops will have very good experience by then.

Jim

hades1001 -> RE: 3 bombs on the KB! (3/3/2008 4:54:48 PM)

If you made your enemy to move so many troops in Luzou, you already did a great job.

And, if you notice your enemies are coming from the south, you just move most of troops back to Manlia,

but leave some in Clark field, when he moves 3500 AV troops in the south, how much AVs does he have in the North? Move all your troops back to Manlia is the last step, before that, what you need to do is just hold your position as long as you can.

There is no way do defend PHI in the beginning of the war unless you  are much better than your opponent.

And Eladan, what's your strategy?

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: 3 bombs on the KB! (3/3/2008 5:18:54 PM)

That's what i did guys. During the first 3/4 months of war, when he brought everything but the kicthen to India, i've made up several blockade runners going from Darwin and PH to Manila, managing to bring 30,000 supplies before he noticed the trick and filled Mindano with Bombers. At the same time i've garrisoned every Luzon res. centers as long as i could (till mid march i think), then he landed 2000 AVs at Naga and more 1500 at San Marcelino and Legaspi...so i moved everyhing back to Clark-Manila and just before he could enter in Manila i sent back to Manila from Clark all my guys.
In the meanwhile i managed to build 9 forts at Manila (which isn't bad considering that manila starts the war with only 1 fort). But now that the supplies are running out, it's gonna be hard to defend the place. With supplies at 1/3 of the requirements my AVs dropped from 25,000 to 17,000 in 2 days!!!
But as Jim's said, even without a single supply, having 2500 AVs beyond 9 forts and urban hex make the whole thing a tough nut to crack for the japs.
At Karachi we're facing the same situation (2750 AVs), with the difference that Karachi still has 240,000 supplies and the hex produces 200 supplies each turn

Now i'm looking forward for a brand new turn...there's so much to do!!!

hades1001 -> RE: 3 bombs on the KB! (3/3/2008 5:59:28 PM)

A couple of Divisions and some SNLF units. He moved back the bulk of his Army from Luzon to China as soon as he forced me back to Manila...Troll is smart enough not to waste some precious time there at the moment

However i think we did our best at Manila...really couldn't do anything more than that. I've already started to evacuate cadres to Darwin and PH

Yakface -> RE: 3 bombs on the KB! (3/3/2008 6:20:16 PM)

Evacuating cadres! Isn't that a bit gamey? [;)][:D]

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: 3 bombs on the KB! (3/3/2008 8:15:06 PM)

Don't think so.

Here's the Manila's status. As you can see the supplies are really in "red" status.

your assult value will drops quickly in this case. May be 30 a day.

And I don't understand why troll leave his div there, just put a lot of new reinfoced SNLFs and naval guard units would be enough, a big prison and no way out[8D]

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: 3 bombs on the KB! (3/7/2008 12:28:43 PM)

However, with the arrival of 75 B-24 each month, i can say that the situation in the pacific will look far more interesting. Now the KB is still lurking there, while my main fleet (2 CVs and 12 BBs) is still R&R at PH, but ready to move in. We've deployed a strong surface force at Eniwetok and we're ready to launch the second attempt to try to take Ponape. This time with a coup de main. 2 raiders marine Bns are ready to get in, using fast transports.
The Marine Para Bn. is already moving towards PH. Soon will be redeployed in the Cent Pac.

At the same time 2 full divisions are arriving at Noumea, along with 3 base forces and a bunch of Eng units. I'm planning also to move a tank Bn there from Maloelap.

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: 3 bombs on the KB! (3/8/2008 1:28:12 AM)

06/02-05/1942

Nothing much happened in these days.
We lost contact with the KB which is now should be at Rabaul, chased down by our subs...
In China we've managed to get most of my units out of Kwayang...but i doubt i'll be able to get them to Chungking...

I'm a dumbass however...at Karachi i clicked allow replacements...didn't want to do that but i did...well...the day after the japs destroyed 100 RAF planes on the ground...[:(]

I'm very busy in these days...sorry for these bad reports...i promise that from tomorrow we'll get back to a decent reports

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: 3 bombs on the KB! (3/8/2008 10:37:40 AM)

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/05/42

Here we go again.
So the KB has managed to get back to Truk unspotted by my subs...[:@]... Trollelite says in his mail that he has a nasty surprise for me...[:(]...well, i don't really need anymore surprise[:o][:-]

In the pacific we're slowly connetcting the New Caledonia with the Marshalls, moving AV ships in those little islands near Fiji in order to place catalinas there and avoid any bad surprise...i was thinking about a raid he could make there with the KB...i simply don't have anything there to protect my communication lines!
The Marina Paras are finally moving towards Wake.
More support units are moving towards New Caledonia and supplies and fuel are flowing from West Coast to Oz quite regularly now.

At Karachi he started some land bombings. Nothing serious however.
At Manila my AVs are dropping fast! from 25,000 AVs of the last week now we're at 14,000[:o][:(]... At least Karachi is still well above the 32,000![:D]

In China we finally managed to get my 1800 AVs out of Kweyjang...now only a tank unit is stopping our route towards Chungking...my hopes rely on the spirit of those chinese guys...they must push forward and open the pocket asap! Before the 10,000 AVs that has conquered Kweyang this turn can storm upon us!

What else?...We're also slowly reinforcing the Aleutinas. Our HRs prevent me from advancing there in the north, but not to streghnen my defences...so better to be prepared!

The RN sunk a RO class sub at the opening of the Aden Channell...we're making constant raids there with our DDs in order to clean some of those nasty bastards!

quote:

ORIGINAL: Gen.Hoepner

Hmm, sounds very ominous, Troll didn’t give you any clues at all what he’s talking about? Not even an idea of where the surprise may be sprung?

At this point, assuming the force that just left Kweiyang doesn’t ultimately get back to Chungking, how much AV do you think will make it there to defend the urban hex? Also how is the experience of the forces you’ll have for defense at Chungking?

I’m just trying to calculate if he even has enough force to take the base. If not, theoretically Chungking can tie up huge amounts of Japanese troops as it produces 800 supplies a day no matter what. So he cannot afford to leave just a small force behind to then go after Russia if he cannot take Chungking.

The more I think about it, the more I think China isn’t as bad off as it looks. If he cannot take Chungking he’ll have thousands of his AV tied down there for the rest of the game. Combine that with what he’ll have tied down in India, and he may not be able to overwhelm Russia as we discussed before.

It all comes down to whether Chungking can hold or not.

Also, have you grabbed a few fragments of 2 or 3 Philippine divisions for reconstruction later? Given the huge gains Japan has made on land, you’re going to need as much extra land power as possible for your counter-attacks later. Two extra Philippine divisions would help a lot, 3 or more would possibly allow you to garrison the entire Aleutian Islands chain with them and free up a large US force for use in the later campaigns.

The Philippine divisions aren’t great attackers, but they are great for defensive garrisons to allow you to free up better units. If you can afford it, I’d go for at least 4 divisions, if not get as many as possible before Manila falls. I’d also try for 1 PS RCT and 1 PS Cav rgt, that way you can make use of the squads in the replacement pools those two units draw on.

Jim

Edit: Spend your Political points on the cheapest divisions, the condition and experience of the divisions don't matter, so take those in the worst shape to keep the overall political costs down.

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: 3 bombs on the KB! (3/8/2008 11:58:37 AM)

Hi Jim. At the moment at Chungking i just have 830 AVs...beyond 7 forts...too few. Probably 3/400 more AVs will be able to get there from the western route, but if i won't be able to bring the Kweyang army there, then Chungking is lost. No matter what. He simply has too many troops, too many planes in China. I'd need probably 3000 more AVs to be able to hold Chungking...but i don't have them.Simply and plain.

I think the surprise he's talking about concerns the pacific somehow. The last raid of his KB didn't achieve anything for him. Just a lot of fuel spent. So i bet he's looking for a revange somewhere, somehow.
A raid deep against my shipping lanes is a possibilty.

I'd be happy if the russian front would be open. I've plannedto move everything back behind Bozrya and i think i can manage to do it. If i can save my air force for the first week, then Russia will be a tough nut to crack for him. Russian air force will tie down a LOT of jap air frames, thus giving the americans more chances to advance in the pacific.

CV Wasp has arrived and is moving to PH. Saratoga is at 29 sys at SF... i'd really need the brit CVs in the pacific right now...mmmmm

Gen.Hoepner -> Ponape conquered! (3/8/2008 7:14:25 PM)

Two very important days.
We decided to exploit the thurderstorm that were forecasted on central pacific for a very brave action.
2 Fast Transport TFs, composed each of 3 APDs and 2 DMSs were loaded with 2 Marine Raider BNs and sent to Ponape from Eniwetok.
The KB was stationed at Truk, under the clouds.
The first wave went in in a night of storm.
For unknown reason one of the 2 Fast Transport TFs didn't arrive in time...the first raider Bn landed, but a HUGE minefield blocked their path and the guns of Ponape did the rest...a disaster!!!....3 ships sunk immediately![:@]...
When the day arrived some Beauforts arrived to give a hand...but the brave raiders managed however to conquer the bunkers![:D]

During the night the american HQ ordered to 2 Dakotas group to bring in supplies and a Marine CD unit from Eniwetok.

When the next day arrived the other FTTF arrived...but an APD got not less than 11 mines!!![:@] and sunk immediately with 168 brave men on it...
However at the end of the 7th 2 marine units were landed at Ponape (even if in bad shape) and half of the 8th Marine CD gun unit was there.
The enemy's resistance was ended by the end of the second day...:-))

The KB now is moving eastwards again...let's see what he wants to do!

Now the struggle will begin. Will Japan try to counterattack? Will we be able to hold the island?...the world holds his breath!

In china things are getting hot again...we repulsed a shock attack from 2 tank units just 1 hex south of Chungking, also thanks to the last bombing mission of what remained of my bomber force in China (based at Chengtu)...and a para attack at Chungking...but now his tanks are closing the gap north of Kweyang...i doubt i'll be able to get to Chungking...[:o]

Gen.Hoepner -> RE: Ponape conquered! (3/8/2008 7:25:19 PM)

Now, if we can hold for the first week at Ponape, things will become really interesting. Ponape can be built to level 4 AF...so to say we can threaten Truk Directly with our 4Es, escorted by the P-38s...
Rabaul at the same time will be difficult for him to keep supplied....

Rob Brennan UK -> RE: Ponape conquered! (3/8/2008 8:33:22 PM)

Nice going on ponape general [:D].

Shame the DMS units failed miserably to clear lanes, valuable assets lost there, however its worth it f u can keep the place. Safe for u to send in pure MSW's now (bar KB obviously). I'd expect a pretty rapid japanese reaction to this too. I'd scramble every transport plane u have in the pacific (and cats too) into getting some combat troops and engineers there asap, as well as 'some' AV support for fighters. FT supply missions should suffice in the short term.

Good luck and happy hunting [:D]

Gutsy? Yeah at last! Ho my, you goddam Italian girl, that is what you should have done in ages! And you want a chocolate medal for that beautiful action, Mr. Obvious? Go back to work NOW! There's still a dozen islands between Ponape and Kyushu just waiting for your embrace! [:D]

You're Italian. I assume you only understand tough love. [:'(]
