Ah....RISK. Played on Ocean Station Patrols back when the pieces were made out of wood (and consequently had some character: long ones, short ones, tall ones...bless them all). Had to put a doubled over piece of masking tape in the center of all the territories to keep the armies from sliding off the table.

ASL is still around. Only now it's called Combat Mission. [&o] And you don;'t need a peice of thread to check LOS! [8D]

The old fashioned board game is still published too: ASL

They bought the rights from Hasbro shortly after they bought Avalon Hill.

Yes

1966

First game I owned myself was AH Arab-Israeli Wars. Also played lots of Third Reich and Squad Leader/Cross of Iron/Crescendo of Doom.

Local Yokel -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/4/2007 7:15:10 PM)

Yes. 1950.

First wargame I played was Dover Patrol - so old it even pre-dates the use of hex grids.[:)]

The origin of hex grids (according to an article i read way back when) is sorta funny... the inventors of TACTICS II were brought in for questioning by (apparently) military intelligence, as apparently some of the things they were doing were considered "TOP SECRET" and the military was investigating a possible leak.

Apparently, they were questioned by military guys who were developing war games by the military, and they were brought to that facility for questioning.

While being questioned, one of the Avalon Hill guys noticed a curious map on the wall with a hexagonal grid superimposed on it, and thought "Hey, that's a good idea!"

The rest is history... [:D]

Big B -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/4/2007 11:17:44 PM)

Interesting,...I wonder if the story is true?

A much earlier method was developed by staggering the squares to get six adjcent areas (like a KriegsMarine map).

i had read in an interview/article, and i suspect it is true... the magazine i read it in is long gone i think (there is a slight chance i have it on microfiche).

Ian R -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/4/2007 11:59:05 PM)

The version I heard/read was similar to rtapasso's, except that it involved the AH guys coming up with the idea themselves independently, and subsequently being questioned because the US military had paid Rand Corporation lots of money to think of the same thing.

Coach Z -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/5/2007 2:21:35 AM)

Very First War Game waas PANZERBLITZ!

Shawkhan -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/5/2007 4:22:22 AM)

...Charles S. Roberts, the founder of Avalon Hill, happened to see a 1959 Life magazine article on Rand Corporation, which featured pictures of some of their games. Noticing the hex grid on some of the maps, Mr. Roberts thought it a good idea. He used to tell the story of the interview about his famous CRT by the government as well, although I am not aware of any evidence supporting that particular story.

LAGAVULIN -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/5/2007 1:15:04 PM)

1966 - A popular year on this forum. Yes, I remember the CRT.

First game was Panzer Leader aound 1978, then Tobruk, Panzer Blitz and Midway. After that pretty much every AH or Victory games title except TLD unitl ASL came out (I never got into that even though I liked the original SL and had the first few expansions).

Born 1952

It is a computer game. It is called Panzer Campaign: Normandy by HPS Simulations. It is a pretty good game, but could be difficult in PBEM.

Here is a link: http://www.hpssims.com/Pages/products/PZC/PZC_normandy/panzer_campaigns_normandy.html

bradfordkay -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/5/2007 7:58:42 PM)

I thought that Atomic Games V for Victory series (published by Avalon Hill) did a very nice job on the Normandy landings (Gold, Juno, Sword covered the British/Canadian beaches and another one whose name I forget covered the US beaches - or was it just Utah Beach?).

Skyros, I still have Terrible Swift Sword. What a spectacular game! (Gettysburg on the regiment level).

The Antietam game (Gleam of Bayonets) in that series was good too....it's in my game closet along with about 7 others from that series including Terrible Swift Sword.

I finished Gleam of Bayonets solitare too. Fun little game.

Someone claimed to have played CNA somewhere, once, or at least some turns of it, didn't they? What CNA needed was computerisation of the detail tracking - and then it would be like playing........ WitP!

A friend and I started that darn game. We played 1 turn and 2 op stages (2/3 of a turn) before I moved out of town for college. I still like it. Gonna play it someday if I can find someone crazy enough to play.

Hmmmm. I'd be tempted. I'm a few miles away in Pickerington. I have CNA, unpunched and never played

Pickerington! My kid's hockey team beat your HS hockey team this past Saturday. [:D]

I'm afraid it'll have to wait a bit. I should be back from deployment around May 09. Unless you want to try it by email..... [:'(]

Well, I have played it 3 times.

1) With Ted, he only got 2 beacheads and we called that one (Game lasted a couple hours)
1) Second game with Ted, Played until the Allies broke out of Normandy (9 months real time once a week)
3) Played myself both sides until Allies broke out, (3 months real time)

Played War in Europe twice (long game) Found an unpunched copy at a Goodwill store for 5 bucks!
World in Flames (3 times) very fun was a team game with 5 players (5 months)
SPI's Central front series (team game) about a month
GDW's Third World War series (team game) at a game convention in San Luis Obisbo
Avalon hills Russian Front (11 months, Ted as Russians) Most exciting game we ever played
Gamers Guderian's Blitzkreig linked with Enemy at the Gates (long game)

When I worked at Vandenberg AFB had the Central Coast Wargamers over at the house for team games,
My garage was converted to a play room where I had lots of Acrylic covered tables!
Lots of other games but those mentioned above are the Monster games we played.

Longest day, I think is one of the most elegent Monster games I've played, easy to learn hard to master, simulates the battlefield very well. Would make a great computer game!!

Ahh, The Gamers games. I have all their operational level, tactical level and RSS with a smattering of the others. Dean Essig has wonderful insight in the development of those systems. I recommend them.

Hi, Yes 1956  Was a big SPI fan

crsutton -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/5/2007 11:52:43 PM)

I go back to Tactics II and the old square hex Gettysburg from Avalon Hill. Born in 54. I still play ASL. This is the first year I have missed ASL Octoberfest in a decade.

Let's see if I can remember this.

1 - A wins
2 - D loses and attacker removes equal amount or more
3 - D moves back
4 - A moves back
5 - D wins
6 - D wins

You think air battles are bloody in WITP. Nothing like losing Moscow on one dice roll....[:D]

mogami -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/5/2007 11:55:28 PM)

Hi,
War in Europe" had at least 4 CRT used depending on Nationality and time frame.

DuncanLang -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/6/2007 3:34:03 PM)

Yes, I do know what a CRT is. Born 1956. First wargame was SPI’s Year of the Rat in 1973, about the 1972 Communist offensive in Vietnam. I had subscribed to S&T, but ended up receiving my first issue weeks before I received Napoleon at Waterloo, their introductory game.

reg113 -> RE: Grognard or n00B ? (11/6/2007 9:22:33 PM)
