...In the end, isn't the biggest 'cause' fo death when it comes to old age basically that the bodies own immune defense becomes very weared down which makes you far more weakened and thus far more sensitive to even things such as flu?

Maybe for some. As for me, a lifetime of poor habits and immodest living will likely be the end of me!

Regards,
Feltan

Actually, I'm pretty sure the leading cause of death is breathing. Do you know of anyone who has died without indulging in a lifetime of breathing first?

But is it clear that "life causes death" in the sense that death is highly correlated with life? Re-stated, have more people lived and not died? Or have more people lived and died? The answer depends on whether there are more people alive now than have ever died.

bradfordkay -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 7:14:30 AM)

Which begs the question: can you be considered to have died if you never lived in the first place?

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 9:48:27 AM)

Which begs the question, what is life?

Weren't we alive when we were miniscule sperms in our fathers ballsacks?

AW1Steve -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 2:30:40 PM)

[>:] I thought the philosopy 101 forum was somewhere else? What next? Does the AI have soul? How many AI's can dance on a pin? What is the sound of the AI flapping?  (Notice how I cleverly tried to guide this clearly runaway thread back to the topic? , Thank you. I'll be here all week in the Anti-thread room. Try the veal.) [:D]

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 2:31:49 PM)

I am AI!

Anyway back on topic, AI is afterall the biggest challenge facing game devs, it's harder to code than anything else afaik.

I am AI!

[X(] In that case , I'm going to break a personal rule , and form a personal attack. You stink AI! (Please note , that this attack was directed at the WITP AI , not at AI's in general and certainly not at Gargantou who foolishly lowered himself to portraying this soulless , brainless non-entity. ) [:D]

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 2:52:36 PM)

EY! I happen to be a magically conjoured AI, I was given a soul by some old dude with a beard, I don't remember his name but he told me that if I told a lie my nose would grow longer!

[:D] Let's leave Terminus out of this. ... Do we need to have you exorcised? That might be a job for RevRick….[:D]

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 4:59:10 PM)

What is a RicRev?[:'(]

AW1Steve -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 5:13:23 PM)

[:D] You will find out! Bwa hahahaha!  I hope he brings his extra large container of holy water! Cue the tubular bells. [:'(]

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 5:33:12 PM)

So anyway, back on topic, would you recommend me to buy WITP even if I don't love to micromanage stuff and will probably only play against the AI?

Can you do like in the old Grigsby games where you could put HQs under Computer control and give them a general objective, i.e. "Take Wake Island" for example.

AW1Steve -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 5:35:48 PM)

[:)] Yes to the 1st and ???? to the 2nd. I think not....[:D]

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 5:45:39 PM)

So does that mean that I will have to micromanage every tiny detail?:P

I mean, as I said earlier, I'm an AI, we dont handle micromanagement very well! In the end it would end with me moving every single ship as close together as possible and then trying to attack Pearl Harbour with my fleet of doom!

AW1Steve -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 5:48:27 PM)

[:D] Works for me.  Just don't try it in PEBM , the scream would carry around the world! [:D]

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 6:51:27 PM)

I wonder how that'd go in PBEM actually, I doubt if I played another human being he'd expect me to be that crazy, maybe he wouldn't be prepared at all?:P

Maybe...but the scream of GAMEY!!! would be heard round the world.[:D]

crsutton -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 7:02:32 PM)

Got into PBEM once I bought UV. Can't really go back to AI now. Just gets too boring.

AI looks OK for the first few months of the war, but it is hard to imagine it working OK any longer.

I will say that I am surprized at the number of AI only players. I just assumed that most played pbem. Just goes to show that the game would have never sold if there was not an AI aspect to it.

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 7:03:08 PM)

What in Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring's name does "GAMEY" mean!?

[:)]I will defer to others...Unless it directly uses a cheat or flaw in the game itself , I don't belive in gamey (well ,except for the smell), but others definately have strong feelings about it. [:D]

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 7:21:54 PM)

I am so confused right now, and I think you and me scared everyone else away from the thread.:(

GAMEY? That is that chicken breast you forgot in the fridge for 4 weeks. [:D]

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 9:45:01 PM)

Mmmm.. Breeeasts...[:D]

Mobeer -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 11:06:33 PM)

At the simplest, "GAMEY" means a tactic that takes advantage of a flaw in the game engine. So for example, invading and capturing a major city with 20 soldiers disembarked from a submarine is "GAMEY".

But where this gets confusing is where a tactic might or might not be taking advantage. For example, loading American carriers with Seafire fighter planes might be considered gamey by some players, who would object about the use of a British built plane on an American built warship. Other players would say that this was within the rules, and something that might have been done historically.

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 11:31:36 PM)

So basically, 'gamey' is something that people consider 'contradicts' logic and history too much.

Nikademus -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 11:37:40 PM)

"Gamey" generally refers to an "exploit" in the game routines that allows players to either do something not very plausible in RL or able to preform an act that gives an advantage that can't be reliably countered. (i.e. no "Con" to balance the "Pro")

Gargantou -> RE: Do you play against the AI? (12/5/2007 11:46:58 PM)

Ok, I get it now, thanks for the explanation guys!

Yes the game still sells some every month. I'd guess that 70-80% of the eventual lifetime sales have been achieved to date. There's nothing else like it so it should continue to generate sales for awhile. Yes there are some "volunteers" that continue to work on the game, and we're happy that they are doing so. I think Gary would have lost his mind if he had continued to work on WitP (I know I would have).

I thought the people actually maintaining the code were Matrix employees. So the ongoing development effort is a quasi-open source model? (Volunteer programmers, but with the code remaining proprietary.)

... I have checked some games for patches, oddly I never thought about it for some others. I never patched UV when I played it. I'm not going to bother now since I haven't played since buying WitP.

As a UV player, I can say that under v. 2.5, the game is still worth playing. However, the UV forum doesn't have nearly the activity as this forum, and there have been times that we UV players have felt like second class citizens, as if we were all expected to upgrade to WitP.

And please don't read anything personal into this post; it's just an observation on my part as a UV player.

For the record I've also played PacWar, which can be considered a "primitive" version of WitP.

When I played UV, I liked it, but kept thinking how nice it would be if I was able to play the whole Pacific instead of being limited to just the Solomons and half of New Guinea. I think the preference has to do with the scale of game you like to play.

Bill
