I have enjoyed many hours of WITP, but I am not sure I am willing to pay a full game price for and expansion unless they bother to improve the terrible looking fonts in the information pop-up panels. Sure, the improvements are great, but the game looks dated. I am wondering why it is such a technical hurdle for them to modernize the graphics. Year 2008 is upon us, and this game looks ten years old.

It's mostly due to the fact that this game is not meant to be graphically eye-watering. The real power under the hood is the code that when you think about it elevates 1s and 0s to a point where they can recreate WWII.

Some people don't even use the replays when they play. They just run a turn and read the combat report.

Me for one. The animations just eat up life.

It is the same with me. There is not enough time in a life to do otherwise.

I'm another..., the turn re-plays take long enough without them.

But I can glean information from the replays that you will never get from the combat report (or intelligence screen). Thus I will continue to watch the replays...

This is true and something that was requested to be changed an AE. If it is great, if it isn't maybe it will be in WITP2.

Cap Mandrake -> RE: Why I probably wont be buying Admirals Edition (12/29/2007 8:21:58 PM)

Even if it is $80 I will buy it. I spend way more than that on my goddamned cell phone every month and I don't even like talking on the phone.

Tom Hunter -> RE: Why I probably wont be buying Admirals Edition (12/29/2007 10:30:03 PM)

So this whole thread comes down to:  "I won't be buying because I don't want to spend the money"  Vs. "I will be buying ir because it provides me with really good value."

I don't play the game any more, but I think it was great value for me.

Sheesh, if your not going to buy the game that is fine, but why start a thread?[8|]

You would have to ask William Amos, as he started this thread.

Ill go as high as 100 myself. However if it comes out before June 2nd perhaps a bit higher since i could get it as a Bday gift from the rents.

madgamer2 -> RE: Why I probably wont be buying Admirals Edition (12/30/2007 9:00:04 AM)

I think ecwgcx has it right. What ever kind of people are working at Matrix they are not fools. They can see that this forum has been running from the time the game was released and I think that it is one of the longest running and best forums going.
Like some companies they could have started a new version when they started AE. They saw that this game was a winner and they went as far as they could with patch's and decides to give us a major expansion which I think will not be as much $$$$ as we think. THis company tends not to do the "New Game every Year" kind of thing. Before they could even think of new they had to make the present game work better and run more stable. Making it better was better than making it new. They will get my support and my money till I see that they don't deserve it.

Perhaps at some point down the like (end of next summer) you could share with us your thinking nand how you came to design AE the way it is going to be done. Like many companies you could have gone the greed and "its a new game....really) route but did not and as a player of your games I thank you and can't wait till AE is out.

madgamer2 -> RE: Why I probably wont be buying Admirals Edition (12/30/2007 9:40:00 AM)

If game length is a big issue with you I might suggest you download the free War in the Pacific and play it. I have often thought it would be nice to have different levels like some games but that would not work in this game. My first thought when I bought this game was that it was a long game with lots of info to deal with. I am surprised that it has done so well and I think it is because it is so much fun to play and who know I may actually finish a game some day LOL

Yes; there's a few people who don't want to play unless it's by their rules.

I will miss them, tragically.

It's been fairly obvious from the comments of the AE Team that this is NOT WITP II. They themselves discuss it as a future goal, and AE as "learning to walk before you try to run". My guess is that from Matrix viewpoint AE is more of a "trial balloon" to see just how much interest is out here, and if a major investment in designing and developing a WITP II would be worthwhile from a business perspective,

I suspect you are 100% correct in that assessment. I'll be getting AE pretty much no matter the cost, but those who are sitting on the fence should consider that your "yes/no" purchase decision on AE is the only concrete step you can take toward assuring the development of WitP2 (i.e. it carries more weight than 1000 BBS posts)

If we ever get a WITP2 the FONTS hopefully will be improved. Until then we can dream.

You can change the font using the command line parameter "-altFont". See this thread:

GaryChildress -> RE: Why I probably wont be buying Admirals Edition (1/6/2008 2:01:29 AM)

I may be alone in this but I do enjoy seeing SOME of the combat replays. To me it adds a kind of aesthetic level to the game to see fan made ship sides or plane tops featured in the battle scenes. Also it makes for interesting AARs to see the occasional battle scene instead of just a stream of combat reports. If I'm not mistaken there is a toggle switch in the existing game which will prevent combat replays from showing. If not that would be a great idea for AE. Those who don't want to waste time in replays can turn them off. Of course all combat relevant information such as whose fighters bounced who, etc, I would think, should be in the combat text reports and not exclusively in the replays.

VSWG,

Thank you, I knew about this. I still desire an even larger font size than this provides. Or should I say my eyes desire it.

Be well,

Waypoints, patrol zones and directed ship repair. I'm already sold

The Gnome -> RE: Why I probably wont be buying Admirals Edition (1/23/2008 9:06:09 PM)

I look at this as WiTP 1.5.... it will clear up a lot of the foibles that are pebbles in my shoe with the original release, and give me a lot more.

I will more than happily buy this product and hold my breath for WiTP 2 at the same time!

(PS if you need free software design advice for WiTP 2 let me know - 15 years coding experience! Will work for food!)

HINT: Revenue from "WitP: AE" will probably fund "WitP II"...

Xargun -> RE: Why I probably wont be buying Admirals Edition (1/25/2008 10:56:15 AM)

I remember driving to Columbus for Origins with the sole purpose of buying the new WitP. In fact, I beat-up some young kids to get in front of the line as the Dealer Room opened and I all but ran to the Matrix booth. I walked calmly up (hands sweating with antipication) and said I'll take 5 copies... I even got my grubby face on the forums for buying the first 5 copies. I have not been active on the forums nor with the game for a long time now - work has gone to overnights and I have a baby now (although he is almost 18months) and life is driving me insane. But I would love to get back into the game and will use this new version as an excuse to myself to do so [:D] I miss my old enemies and can't wait for the new game.

If it is released at Origins (which is Summer 08) I will do the same trip again and maybe get lucky enough to beat up some more kids who don't understand that its national security here... and the Allies must be punished for their aggression [X(] [yes I love playing the Japanese] But we will have to wait and see...

Night Shifts, a child just starting "the Terrible Two's", and you want to jump into AE as well? You are a true Gamer (and a total lunatic!). Good Luck...

Not insane - I will just need something to keep me sane... Some nice senseless slaughter of allied troops [:D]

WTF is with the delivery issues for hard copies? Been a month since the status of my order was classed as "in the mail". How hard can mailing a box be? Perhaps a new company needs to replace their current mail order service. I've heard someone has been waiting over two months and is in the US...pathetic.[:@][8|]

I look at it as an investment in this evolutionary process. Way back when there was Pacific war, the grandfather to WitP. I still have my old apple IIe edition of it too. Then there came the matrix edition of it. A new engine, new graphics and we get Uncommon Valor....expand upon that and we have WitP. Better technology comes along and we have an improved engine with expanded maps, new capabilities and we have the Admiral's edition. Eventually WitP II.

All worth it in my opinion. If it wasn't for this step by step process, we wouldn't have any of it, and as long as there are those of us that will support it, there will be guys like Matrix and company that will continue to improve upon it. But that takes money, cuz I don't think they are independently wealthy...so it's upon us to do our part, for without each side, there is nothing. I've been buying Gary Grigsby games for 25 years now and I doubt I will stop anytime soon.

I agree with you and all you say here. The question in my mind is that as the tech get better is it always better to make a game bigger and more complex? No matter how hard you try to get everything right a simulation can never replace real life. I like WitP and agree it is the best game for the money on the market. I also think that it is right at the edge of being a little more time taking and complex for me to handle. There are so many things I have to do each turn that I always miss some things. Now that I am starting to get a handle on it along comes AE which I will buy. I hope that even though there will be many new things there still will be an easier playing interface. I find real life a bit overwhelming at time so perhaps WitP is closer to real life than I am willing to admit LOL
Back in the board gaming days most of us found that when board games got REALLY big than no matter how much we loved the subject of the game the size and complex nature of the game kept most of us from actually playing them.
With computer games is this not also possible or am I just getting old and senile?
