jesperpehrson -> The world according to the french (12/11/2007 12:39:49 AM)

I have once seen a funny map of the world according to the french. Does anyone have anything like that handy? When I search the web I only find something similar for the americans, which is funny as well, but not useful for me at the moment.

Any speedy help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry capitan. I donīt think anyone wants to touch this request after the Iwo jima thread.

Raverdave -> RE: The world according to the french (12/11/2007 10:26:37 AM)

Well here is a look at the REAL map of the world.

What are those bits of land along the bottom, Raver?

HansBolter -> RE: The world according to the french (12/11/2007 4:07:22 PM)

Wow, it's amazing how small Australia actually is when seen from the "proper" perspective! [:D]

If so, if anyone has a map like that, feel free to PM me! I need it on friday for my class on France, as a gimmick. As said any help would be greatly appreciated.

Small ? Ha ! You could fit all of europe and the middle east into OZ and still have room left over.

Yea, but on the Mercator projection maps we usually see here in the "states" Australia looks bigger than all of Asia(well almost....so I exaggerated a little for effect)!

I wasn't poking fun at you "downunderers" [:D], it was an underhanded poke at that Mercator guy, whoever he was.

We did. It was called post-war migration. We're having a crack at Asia and Africa now. One or two problems but our food's a lot better! Plus I've always fancied dusky, exotic chicks...so no complaints on that front either. [:'(]

Cheers, Neilster

Shawkhan -> RE: The world according to the french (12/14/2007 1:03:26 AM)

You are not kidding about the food. I've been to much of the world but the food in Adelaide was among the best I've ever tasted.

Adelaide !   You missed the best place............MELBOURNE !

Please enlighten an ignorant Yank.

I was under the apparently mistaken impression that OZ was the mythical, mystical place the twister carried Dorothy and Toto off to. [sm=00000280.gif]

Twotribes -> RE: The world according to the french (12/14/2007 2:19:56 PM)

Better yet there was an HBO or Showtime series of life in the slammer and the joint was called "OZ". In Tinman OZ stands for Outer Zone.

Very appropriate emoticon there Hans, only I don't recall Dorothy doing in spin-dancing therein, but I could be wrong. Surely there must be a WoO historian among us? What are we to do if we do not?

I may not be a WoO historian but any child of the 40's and 50's can tell you of the enchantment of seeing the House spin off into the air with Margret Hamilton changing into the Wicked Witch of the West from the nasty schoolteacher in black and white and suddenly being greeted by a color version of OZ!! Magical! After having to use our imagination for so many years [:)] (Book 1900, Film 1939 re-released 1949, 55, & Color TV 1956) So tis only a figure that Dorothy and Toto did the spinning though they were in a spinning house and can be said to have spun without contradiction.

And I understand from the previews that the SciFi channels production of Tinman is the latest "spin" on the story.

cdbeck -> RE: The world according to the french (12/14/2007 7:09:00 PM)

And Tinman was mostly crap. It isn't fair to call it a "re imagining" more like a "continuation." You would just have to watch it. The effects were neat, the story was ok, a little "meh." However, Zooey Deschanel couldn't act her way out of a box - she totally phoned this one in. She played the same "semi-monotone, always react with sarcasm" character that she always does. Pity, she is very pretty, yet her personality is a little like a rock. I'm sure in real life she is much more interesting than her screen performance.

Yeesh... always have to make fun of the French. I would like to see a map of the world according to England. India would be a giant teacup, Hong-Kong would be huge and mainland China a dot, America would be wilderness and shotguns, and Australia would be shaped like a giant trashcan (or rubbish-bin for all you brits out there). I assume Africa could only be shaped like a giant face of Cecil Rhodes, wearing a diamond bow-tie where South African would be.

Actually we are doing a project for our students talking about how much we like France. We would just have liked to have a funny perspective on how one different perspectives can be.

I donīt understand why this would be such a big deal to be honest but then again people are really touchy these days.

ORANGE -> RE: The world according to the french (12/15/2007 1:00:44 AM)

America would be wilderness and shotguns

This is a legitimate goal.

I guess it would be what would happen if Texas colonized the rest of the States... [;)]

You will discover here that the only entities you can safely make light of, make fun of or openly attack will be the United States in General, President Bush and or the Republicans in particular. Everything else is going to get you a quick report for "breaking" the rules with demands for a thread lock.

You will discover noone has ever heard of that here and all are willing to read the demands.

/* LOCK LOCK LOCK LOCK LOCK -now */

Sorry forgot it was banned. Its so weird you know. Not banned there, banned here, i get it all mixed up. This has gone for years now. I didnt even remember.

But they could had been in the house, spiining in the opposite direction, such as it would appear in the house. But if you could see through the house, reverse spinning would place them on some sort of paradimical standstill, such that they appeared not to be spinning, or so I reason[:D], such that the people spinning would work as an effective counter-balance to the house spinning. You doubt me? Well how do people spinning in such a house, without counter-spin, otherwise come out of it without even a headache?

I wasn't born until '59, but though WoO was a pretty decent movie, especially for kids, "Somewhere over the Rainbow" song as sung by Judy had to be one of the most beautiful iconic songs ever sang. I don't know if the writer of that song meant it that way, but it is one of those songs that can be imagined to not actually be singing of Oz, but instead of Heaven, which in my mind makes it a bit more special than it otherwise would be. One thing I can say, I don't think I have ever heard a song by a teenager which will ever sound so good to me. I will always remember it and feel I have really been blessed when out of nowhere I hear it some place. I'm not a big listener of Judy Garland, but i have never heard her sing anything that was even half as appealing as that song has been. One hit wonder pretty much,

I'm not sure who that is, but that's some imagination it took to come up with that.

Jeffrey H. -> RE: The world according to the french (12/15/2007 7:33:00 PM)

The one that I think is really good is the Australian one with the World upside-down. Or at least it looks that way to those of us that are used to seeing it with the Northern hemisphere on top.

Just think, if some space civ came to Earth, what if they first saw it from a South is up perspective ? Would all of their maps and globes show it that way ?
