When you're young and indestructable, 20 to 40+ degree rolls are the best "ammusement park" ride ever invented. Did it for about 6 hours in the Med in '86 on the USS Truxtun.

Every "amusement" can be boring if it lasts too long...
Six hours? [sm=Cool-049.gif] that's a decent dose of amusement.... [:D]

This is why I decided to stomp beetles rather than be a swabie.

Big Deal... Try the same thing in the same place on an Adams Class... you're walking on the bulkheads half of the time..and I was young and indestructible in 1969... EGAD!![:D] Even worse, we were steaming with one of the Frammed Gearings... and got a message on our TF teletype net... They had dropped off of the message net and sent this.. "Sorry. Will call you when we surface."

BigBadWolf -> RE: CVL Cowpens rolling in Typhoon (1/11/2008 6:58:24 PM)

Why are they on deck in this weather? [&:]

Terminus -> RE: CVL Cowpens rolling in Typhoon (1/11/2008 6:58:51 PM)

[:D][:D][:D][:D]

That's priceless!!!

GaryChildress -> RE: CVL Cowpens rolling in Typhoon (1/11/2008 7:01:14 PM)

I wonder what the chances are of them getting off an airstrike against KB? [:D]

Knavey -> RE: CVL Cowpens rolling in Typhoon (1/11/2008 8:19:07 PM)

Ummm...can you say 1092' long and approx 100,000 tons?  THAT is the way to ride out bad weather.

Judging from the camera angle, I'd say the camera man must be a little wet. [X(]

Was the camera mounted on a dolphin or what?![X(]

Knavey -> RE: CVL Cowpens rolling in Typhoon (1/11/2008 10:29:51 PM)

I am looking at US Aircraft Carriers by Friedman and it has a picture on pg 14 that clarifies how this picture was taken.

It appears the photographer is standing in the twin 40mm sponson that is just aft and below the one these guys are standing on.  This picture makes it look like they are towards the stern of the ship, but in reality they are at probably 50 feet or more from the very end of the flight deck.

Looking for the picture on the web.  If I find it, I will post it.  It is of the Cowpens in the yards getting upgrades.

Knavey -> RE: CVL Cowpens rolling in Typhoon (1/11/2008 10:41:32 PM)

Take a look at this one...its not the one that I found in the book, but you can clearly see the sponsons on the side of the Cowpens.

This is what "TF 1 air missions cancel due to poor weather" looks like[:D]

That's such a sad waste - you could have used that photo in a "guess the ship" thread.

Knavey -> RE: CVL Cowpens rolling in Typhoon (1/12/2008 2:16:52 AM)

It would have lasted about 30 seconds with this crowd as a "Name this ship" photo.

spence -> RE: CVL Cowpens rolling in Typhoon (1/12/2008 3:57:47 AM)

Riding the big rollers you jump straight up as the stern rides over the crest of the wave then find your feet 10 ft off the deck as it sinks into the trough. Olden days fun when on patrol[:)]

Knavey -> RE: CVL Cowpens rolling in Typhoon (1/12/2008 6:26:14 AM)

The guy who is laughing went on to design a few of the roller coaster rides at Cedar Point.  [;)]

The reason I thought it would be appropriate is that the name of the ship is on the photo!

Even into the fifties, USN carrier pilots had about a 50% chance of surviving to retirement.

The picture below was posted by someone a little while ago. The size of the CVL surprised me when I saw it.

Young and dumb is the buzz word. They obviously are out there for the cool photo. Which reminds me of (ahem..) a sea story of my own. In the mid 1970s I was working on an very fast (SL7-28 knt cruise speed) merchant ship in the North Atlantic. After work my mate and I decided to step out the side door next to the gangway to get a snapshot of each other in a raging storm. One would pop out on deck while the other shot the photo from the doorway. I went first and got a cool picture of myself. Then my buddy went and just as I snapped the picture, the ship rolled into a wave and we took green water right down that side. I was knocked back into the passageway by a few tons of sea water (ruined the camera) and my buddy just dissapeared. I got myself up and looked out the door to see that he had been swept about 30 meters down the side passage way and was clinging to a stanchion-the only thing keeping him from going over the side and becoming a footnote. I ran down the deck and pulled him into the house and we slammed the door shut.

We were shaking and laughing like a couple of high school girls. Too stupid to realize how close he came. That wave ripped the gangway off the side of the ship and smashed a few containers to bits.

Thanks for this pic. This is really cool, 3 generations of carriers side by side. [8D]

It was not my find Gary. One of the forum regulars posted it a little while ago and I loved it so kept a copy. If I could remember who I would give them credit!
