DaveB -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/14/2008 7:41:48 PM)

Heck I know about this stuff,
from watching your (US) cable TV channels... it's that sort of rugby game isn't it, where everyone puts on more body armour than the Army do to actually go to war, and there are about 50 guys in each team who keep wandering on and off the pitch?

My money's on the Yankees then - huge odds, but what a payoff if they win!

(I am slightly confused by one thing - my 'local' team seems to change between 'Dolphins' and 'Seminoles' - are the two interchangeable, or haven't I quite mastered, completely, the subject?)

Dave... re your last question... The Seminoles are the team consisting of student/athletes at Florida State University (known as Free Shoes University in some circles). There is a team at each of the major colleges/universities in the US.

The Dolphins are the professional team based in Miami (that plays in the National Football League). Most of the players on the college teams aspire to receiving a contract to play in the NFL, but since there are several hundred college teams out there and only (I think) 28 NFL teams most of those college players do not go on to play in the NFL.

In the US there are thos ewho prefer to follow the college game, those who prefer the professional game and those who are nuts about both. I fall in the first group.

EDIT: the college and professional teams DO NOT play against each other.

Sonny II -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/15/2008 12:09:10 AM)

There are 32 pro teams in the NFL. And judging from the Dolphin's record this year it may be advisable to have the Seminoles play in their place next year.[:D]

Charbroiled -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/15/2008 12:49:02 AM)

I think Saturday's game against the Seahawks proved that Mother Nature is a Packer fan.

They could only do one game worse!

DaveB -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/15/2008 7:16:05 PM)

Cheers,
now if I can just work out how the players get their heads into those teeny tiny helmets in the sports store window display I reckon I'll have this hacked.

Actually I have to admit that the most baffling bit about your version of football is this idea about having different teams within the team, and a whole bunch of guys swap over depending on what's planned for the next few minutes....

...the most baffling bit about our version is why we persist in playing it when everyone beats us all the time.

Now, which league do the Mets play in again?

Unless, of course, they are playing the Bears!

Then the Packers can't seem to handle the weather.

I was there at that game on the 23rd. It was friggin cold cold cold cold cold.

Check me and my wife out...

Feinder -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/15/2008 10:59:53 PM)

Interesting.

I was looking up when they started playing different teams on offense and defense, and there are some "intersting" teams that no longer exist...

Duluth Eskimos
Akron Pros
Canton Bulldogs
Chicago Staleys
Oorang Indians
Dayton Triangles (team for geeks?)
Cleveland Bulldogs (so thats why they wear that mask sometimes, interesting!)
Chicago Cardinals
New York Yankees (that must have been confusing - there was also a Cleveland Indians and Brooklyn Dodgers!)
Portsmith Spartans
Hammond Pros
Muncie Fliers
Rochester Jeffersons
Rock Island Independents
Decatur Staleys
Racine Cardinals
Buffalo All-Americans
Chicago Tigers
Columbus Panhandles
Detroit Heralds

Actually, it looks like New York Giants and Green Bay Packers (named for the Acme packing company - and you thought it Acme only shipped for Wile E. Coyote!) are the two oldest teams currently on the roster.

AcePylut -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/15/2008 11:03:47 PM)

The "chicago" staleys (actually they were called the Decatur Staleys) are what became the Chicago Bears.

The Chicago Cardinals became (after a few moves) the Arizona Cardinals.

Here are the NFL's charter franchises:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_franchise_moves_and_mergers

By the start of the 1920 APFA season, the nascent National Football League was comprised of 14 franchises. Of those teams, only two are still in operation as of 2006 (denoted in bold):
  • Akron Pros: Changed name to Akron Indians in 1926. Permanently suspended operations in 1927.
  • Buffalo All-Americans: Changed name to Buffalo Bisons in 1924, Buffalo Rangers in 1926, and changed back to Buffalo Bisons in 1927. Suspended operations in 1928. Resumed play in 1929, but folded following the season.
  • Canton Bulldogs: Cleveland Bulldogs in 1923. Suspended operations in 1924. Resumed play in Canton in 1925. Folded following 1926 season.
  • Chicago Cardinals: Merged with Pittsburgh Steelers for one year in 1944. Returned as an independent team in 1945. Moved to St Louis in 1960. Moved to Phoenix in 1988. Changed name to Arizona Cardinals in 1994.
  • Chicago Tigers: Folded following 1920 season.
  • Cleveland Tigers: Folded following 1921 season.
  • Columbus Panhandles: Changed name to Columbus Tigers in 1923. Folded following 1926 season.
  • Dayton Triangles: Franchise relocated and renamed Brooklyn Dodgers in 1930. Changed name to Brooklyn Tigers in 1944. Merged with Boston Yanks in 1945. Franchise canceled in 1945 by league; players assigned to Boston Yanks.
  • Decatur Staleys: Moved to Chicago in 1921. Changed name to Chicago Bears in 1922.
  • Detroit Heralds: Folded following 1920 season.
  • Hammond Pros: Folded following 1926 season.
  • Muncie Flyers: Folded following 1921 season.
  • Rochester Jeffersons: Folded following 1924 season.
  • Rock Island Independents: Folded following 1924 season.

All of these began in the Midwest.  Rock Island Illinois, Muncie Indiana, Decatur illinois, etc.

Al Harris single handedly gave the Giants their whole offence...

Annoying when the better team has a bad day and loses. Make no mistake Greenbay is a better team. Just didnt happen.[:(]

Tend to agree..., but the Giants seem to be the "team of destiny". Maybe that's what it will take to put the brakes on the "New England Express".

histgamer -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/21/2008 7:00:45 AM)

IDK I think brady is an arrogent **** who is full of false modesty but at the same time I hope the Giants suffer a reality check and get stomped on.

I know prolly 70% of the country is bumed they wanted to see Favre vs Brady, woulda had the best raitings for a superbowl in years and the networks are prolly bumed as well.

AcePylut -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/21/2008 7:20:03 AM)

Yeah, hate the packers and can't stand favre... but shees I can't stand this years NY Giants.

Eli, all I've seen from him in the last 4 weeks is a loser punk that's gotten lucky that the other team has played crappier than they played. Every single time the Giants run a play and it doesn't work, Eli throws his arms up in the air all "oh woe is me" like a wussy. I can't stand him.

Go Pats. I hope they win 59-3. Giants get the insult-to-them field goal as time runs out.

histgamer -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/21/2008 7:32:22 AM)

I sortta wants NE to win but Brady is a fake and a punk even if they do win.

ny59giants -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/21/2008 7:45:02 AM)

I've heard for the last two weeks how the NY Giants should not even come to play the game. Now both the Cowgirls and Packers can go play golf. [:D]
Now, I will hear had over matched they will be against the Patriots.  Go news for us die hard Giants fans. [sm=sign0066.gif]

histgamer -> RE: OT- The Super Bowl goes through Green Bay (1/21/2008 8:04:43 AM)

I agree the Giants played better but they are NOT the better team. Newsflash Giants fan the better team dont always win.
