zaquex -> TCP/IP enabled games (1/16/2008 9:32:31 AM)

Are there any good TCP/IP enabled turn based strategy matrix games you would recommend?

I have this need to find a good LAN game preferably with provision for more than two players, though recommendation of any really good 2 player game would also be appretiated.

We prefere pre WWI games but this is not in any way a requirement.

Please give me some advice

I'm currently hooked on Strategic Command #1. 2 Players max and not from Matrix but it's a lot of fun H2H.

Isn't SPWAW TCP/IP playable? I guess I should play that game more, but, I'm pretty hooked on Combat Mission for online play and PBEM. The problem I found with TCP/IP turn based games is most of them just take too long to play in one sitting and a lot of people just quit in the middle of them. I tried to play several games of Civilization online and HOMM and had people quit all too often in the middle of the game or even just a few turns in. With Combat Mission and I would think SPWAW you can setup some short games to play that you can play out within 4 hours easy.

John Tiller's Campaign Series is TCP/IP capable with up to 16 players (8 per side)

Gary Grigby's World at War - A World Divided. Strategic, turn-based, up to 5 players.

There's a demo for the original World at War so you can have a look to see if you like the engine.

Same here. Other guy just didn't want play over 10 hour streak, so we saved and continued later. It's still going on, but it don't have PBEM option. Game is MegaMek, and you can bet your butt that it's much faster to play than Classic BattleTech.

MegaMek itself is based on Classic BattleTech and follows its rules to letter. If you don't know either already, then here's brief description: Classic BattleTech is tactical level wargame that models war of 31st century on land, sea, air and space. Main focus of game are BattleMechs, gigantic walking warmachines of mass destruction. MegaMek covers most of the stuff on land and sea. Air element is limited to VTOL units only.

In my opinion, Classic BattleTech would be preferred choice for social gatherings while MegaMek is useable over Internet. However, MegaMek is easier to get into, and definitely cheaper: it's open source program, and thus completely free. LAN and hotseat work too. In case of hotseat, MegaMek is to be started multiple times where one copy makes host (address: localhost) and other instances join to it. Becouse nature of game, PBEM is out of question. There are some game related books available for free in PDF format. Check out download section of Classic BattleTech WWW site for those.

Cyber Empires was my megamek game. I played it so much I got sick of mech games though. lol It wasn't tcp/ip I don't believe though, but, you could play it hotseat and then battle your friend on a half screen play field.

That is almost funny. Classic BattleTech and thus MegaMek are tactical level wargames. Cyber Empires don't have that element at all.

Yes it does the battles were tactical and you could jump in any mech you wanted during the tactical battles.

Yeah, right. Tactical, like real time top down shooters that have teammates who player can't issue orders of any kind. Does this really qualify wargame, like MegaMek, Steel Panthers and Jagged Alliance series?
