EricB -> The last out - A little urgency, please. (1/16/2008 10:58:28 PM)

Hi guys. Great Forum. Long-time reader/First time poster...

I wouldn't call this a tech glitch as much as a "recognition" glitch. I have played many seasons of PureSim 2007 and love it. The thing that occasionally pops up and really gets my goat sometimes is when you have the winning run headed for home in the bottom of the 9th and the defense elects to no-throw (presumably to keep the batter from taking an extra base) and concede the run.

Example: an opposing runner on second, less than two outs, single to the outfield and the message pops up "Runner scores - fielder throws to second" or something like that. I'll try to find a game log where it's happened.

Also have seen simulated games where the outfielder, on a SAC FLY, will not throw home in that same game situation, electing to keep another on first or second and CONCEDES THE WINNING RUN. When I'm playing the game it'll ask me if I want to attempt to throw home, but during the simmed game relies on it's own logic and....well Game Over.

Thanks.

I have not seen this, and in a cursory glance at the code I see the AI specifically checks for this situation. I'm obviously missing something. I'll let you know if anything turns up.

I've seen something similar, as well. Example:

Bottom of the 9th, 10th, 11th, or whatever.

Runners on the corners or bases loaded, one out.

Batter hits an infield grounder and the defense throws out the batter/runner at first base. Winning run scores.

I have also seen it done the "right" way, where the throw home is late and the winning run scores. I only recall seeing it happen this way once, though.

Another thing I've noticed is: I'm managing and have a runner on second with good speed (even a pinch runner with great speed). WAY too often, the runner is automatically held at third on a single to the outfield with two outs. Unless the runner falls down along the way, he should ALMOST ALWAYS have at least the option of going home. Along these same lines, you can predict that any runner with SP of 35 or less will ALWAYS automatically stop at third in a similar situation. I don't have my game at hand. There may be something in the Manager Tendencies that addresses this. If not, maybe there should be.

Based on that last thought, a situation like Sid Bream scoring from second on a single to the outfield cannot happen. The manager would never even have the option of sending him home.

In a way, though, I can accept that. As a manager, you don't have direct control of what a runner or third base coach does in the heat of the moment. I just feel that there needs to be at least the occasional chance of someone like Bream scoring (or getting thrown out) on a two-out single to the outfield.

It's strange how this happened again so soon after my earlier post. Top of the 9th. Pinch runner Rickey Henderson on second (SP = 78) representing the tying run. Batter Rob Picciolo (no laughter, please, he's batting .367) singles in the hole on the right side. In right field is Joe Rudi (Arm = 35). Rickey Henderson.........moves to third.........[:@].

Naturally, the next batter, Miguel Dilone, strikes out and the game is over. Another loss for the 1979 A's. It's much easier to handle an 8-0 loss than a 3-2 loss, or so I've always heard.

I have the Game Log, if you need it. The A's used to be called the Swingin' A's when I was a Little Leaguer. This group is called the F---in' A's.

GNDN -> RE: The last out - A little urgency, please. (1/22/2008 6:22:29 PM)

I have to agree with mot here. I have Jose Reyes (speed 97 - zoom, zoom) and have a hard time understanding why he can't score from 2B with 2 outs and the ball gets through the infield.

Maybe he trips on 3B? [8D] Or maybe Rickey has been teaching him bad habits in spring training?[;)]

I've searched many of my logs for the scenario, but can't quite find it (not like it happens all the time). I appreciate the back up here, motnahp and GNDN.

Sid Bream! Wow, Thanks for taking me back.
