I've been having problems winning as the Americans vs. the Brit AI -- at normal AI setting w/increased processor time -- in both the '75 and '76 campaign scenarios, but by trial and error I discovered a winning strategy.

The key is to quickly reinforce either Ward or Washington's troops, which begin the campaign on the heights to the west of Boston. Keep the troop posture at defensive -- don't set to aggressive -- then click the orders button to set the troops to enter Boston.

Hopefully, when the computer appraises this situation, the AI Brit troops in Boston will decide to take to ship and head to Savannah (!) where they will cry havoc, but this gives you time to consolidate New England; leave Washingtion in Boston training troops, which now happens very easilly under 1.13d.

After it takes Savannah, the Brit AI will head north, but in my games it never got beyond the Middle States. Burgoyne will still invade south from Canada, but if you forgo taking Quebec and instead fortify Montreal and Ticonderoga, the AI should never get into Albany.

Play defensively, make the AI pay dearly for every seige while turning your militia into trained troops, and you will probably win these scenarios by 1780.

I have not tried this tactic in the alternate setup '75 scenario, but I assume it will work there as well.

where do you get this 1.13d.... can't find it!

It's located at the AGEOD forum, which can be accessed from the IMPORTANT: Useful Links thread above.

Interesting. I wonder why the AI doesn't take New York instead? Historical and makes life a bit harder for the Doodles.

As Britain against the AI I leave a fairly large holding force in Boston (fortified) and send several bns to Norfolk where they quickly take Richmond etc and isolate the south. This allows Cornwallis to mop up easily and Grey to land in New York. For some reason the AI becomes obsessed with Canada and attacking the Indians, ignoring the substantial threats elsewhere. Once Albany falls to a thrust from Canada, New England or New York in '77 the game is pretty much over with not a sniff of of garlic to be detected in the colonies.

I need to play the rebels against the British in the newly patched version but given that Howe and ten bns can hold a fortified Boston against Washington and a horde of rebels with little problem in my British game, I'm surprised the AI evacuates - there really seems no need.

Probably because the AI would sometimes conclude that eventually the Boston seige will cause casualties (hits); historically, the Brits found Boston untenable and left.

Why Savannah? Possibly because there are higher Brit loyalties in the South, but I would have went for Philly or NYC.

Yeah, I think this is a significant miscalculation on the part of the AI.

To be fair, a human player might well be able to take Boston even if fortified and defended - but it wouldn't be quick or cheap I think and they would lose a lot of ground elsewhere.

But to head for the south on the grounds that that is where the most loyalty is is kind of fair enough. But I think it should land at Norfolk (or possibly Phili) and strike south rather than try and head north from the nether regions of the map.

It's academic anyway as the AI won't change - I just find its 'preconceptions' interesting. I've often seen Washington commanding a couple of bns in the backwoods west of Albany for instance. Odd...

Why not sail to take NY, then have Burgoyne link-up from the south; wasn't that the historical Brit plan to isolate rebellious New Englanders -- like myself -- from the rest of the colonies?

Washington isn't a great commander; his only real advantage is that he can command more troops w/o penalty. Now I relegate him and (Von) Steuben to training troops, which is easier under 1.13d; training can even happen w/o a training officer, although this is unpredictable and spurious.

Venator -> RE: Winning Strategy for America in 1.13d (1/31/2008 6:45:27 PM)

I rather meant it was odd that Washington wasn't training or in fact doing much of use.

I land in force at NY later (usually with Knyphausen or Grey). I don't find Howe can detach more than half a dozen or eight bns from Boston and still be confident of holding it. But those half dozen bns (under Clinton and a couple of others) can grab the Norfolk-Richmond group of cities.
