Things are looking good and running smooth, seems like. I've never seen China so effectively decimated. (And I mean that in the literal sense.) Where will the SAA go now? Have you considered an overland advance in Burma? Oh, and you're gonna have a lot of carriers if you aren't interrupted..

SAA is in Singapore for R&R at the moment. The 3rd Armor Div will join them there shortly as I had the PPs to buy that unit out of the mainland. The 1st Arm Div is already there.

In another week or so I will decide where to put the SAA. Most likely it will split into three main groups that will effectively be used as reserve/counter attack forces in each region. One for Burma/Malaya, one for Java/Timor/New Guinea, and one for the Pacific (based in Truk most likely.)

Never considered an advance past Burma, overland or by sea. My plan has been to build a perimeter (albeit a large one) and stop there, force the Allies to come to me. In Burma, that means either an amphibious assault facing a lot of LBA, or a slow overland crawl that will need to pull supplies over the mountain trails - while attacking my fort 9 bases that have good supplies, lots of ART and rested troops. Not to mention many armor units that can move around to the threatened areas.

Re China - thanks. I was really happy with how it went there - much better than I expected. The key was when the SAA stopped by for a visit and took Liuchow. The rest of China just crumbled after that.

In the Indian Ocean, Orestes was reported sunk. DD's Yugumo and Kasumi found Ulysses and put 4 5" shells into the cargo ship.

In China, due to a timing error, 40 some Lily's arrived over Chungking before the main strike coming from Changsha and Kweilin. The ran into a strong CAP reinforced by the AVG! 17 Lily's were lost, but we got payback when the main strike hit. Every Chinese and AVG plane was shot out of the sky and them more planes were destroyed on the ground. Total air losses for the day were 66 for the Allies and 50 for Japan. Of the Allied losses, 35 were P-40E's of the AVG.

Destroyers Makigumo and Yamagumo took their turn at target practice on the AK Ulysses, hitting the ship 16 times with their guns, and putting 5 torpedoes into the ship. Needless to say, Ulysses sunk.

In China, the 74th Chinese Corp surrendered in the pocket north of Changsha. Over 9,000 POWs were taken and one enemy unit remains.

Another Liz raid from Changsha to Chungking, escorted by many fighters takes out 10 more Chinese fighter planes.

9 B-25Cs, escorted by some P-40E Warhawks bombed Adak Island, destroying one Jake floatplane in the Harbor.

The last unit north of Changsha surrendered today. Those troops of ours are now free to move on to Chungking.

Our fighters flew over Chungking, but the bombers stayed home. Only a couple enemy planes showed themselves, one was shot down and the other fled.

7 B-25C's today attack Adak, no damage taken.

Eniwetok airfield was completed (sz 4). The airfield at Buin was expanded. (sz 3)

The bombers went with the fighters to Chungking today, destroying four Chinese fighters. I should mention these raids on Chungking are also destroying supplies and killing enemy troops.

6 B-25C's visited Adak today, again, their bombs landed off shore scoring no hits.

Palmyra was attacked by two waves of enemy bombers and our fighters gave a decent accounting for themselves. First wave was 43 B-24D Liberators, of which 11 didn't make it home. Next was 38 A-29 Hudsons and of those, 12 hit the silk. We lost no fighters in the air, but the bombers that got through managed to hit 6 Oscars and 1 A6M2 on the ground.

Dili airbase, on Timor, expanded today. (sz 3)

Chungking bombing saw no fighters in the air as the P-43As moved to Chengtu. We did manage to destroy a pair of SB-2C on the ground though.

As a construction unit was unloading from ships at Palmyra, 13 A-29 Hudsons from Hawaii attacked. Our reinforced CAP was ready though, and killed all but one of the enemy bombers.

Our first division started shelling Chengtu today while reconning the enemy strength there. It appears there is only one major combat group and three support groups. Five divisions and two armored regiments will move to Chengtu to seize the base, giving us a nearby supply source for our forces that will lay siege to Chungking.

I-28 is hit by subchasers south of French Frigate Shoals. The sub takes heavy damage. It will make for Wake Island where an AR waits. This group seems to be larger than a simple ASW group. Fighters and bombers will be sent to Wake and Midway in case this is an invasion force.

Air raids continue on Chungking. Today 10 enemy planes were destroyed, although 1 Tony and 2 Oscar IIa's were lost.

Today's raid on Chungking destroyed 13 Chinese planes for no loss.

In a bit of irony, one of our minelayers enroute to Christmas Island (Indian Ocean) struck a VH2 sub laid mine at Merak. Ten Minesweepers at Batavia will clear the area tomorrow.

AK Lyon Maru, hit at Palmyra several days ago, finally sunk less than 200 miles from Tarawa.

Air raid over Chungking only destroyed 5 enemy planes, partly due to lack of targets. There just aren't that many Chinese airplanes left to destroy. Plenty of men and supplies though.

In Burma, Hurricanes attacked at Mandalay and we lost 1 Tojo and killed 2 Hurricanes. At Myitkina, in two waves, Hurricanes attacked and they lost 8 Hurricanes to 2 of our Tonys. In both cases our fighters were outnumber around 4 to 1, but managed to kill several more of the enemy.

RAF still struggles in Burma

Bombers in China were tired, so the fighter just flew a sweep over Chungking today, shooting down 4 I-153c while taking no losses.

I-6 was hit by a B-25C off the coast of Sydney, but it should make it back to Auckland for repairs.

Rossel Island (between the Solomons and NG) airfield expanded today. (sz 2)

Chungking air raid nailed two I-153Cs today.

Major development in the Pacific: Large convoy spotted at Laysan Island, east of Midway. Near the island a carrier force was spotted, but its planes were mostly unable to fly due to poor weather. Several waves of Nell and Betty bombers attacked the enemy ships. PC Sonoma was hit and sunk. PG Taney, APD Calhoun and AP Waiwera were all hit. The AP was loaded with troops. 6 F4F-4 Wildcats attempted to defend the ships, but our A6M2's were able to keep them off the bombers. 3 Wildcats were destroyed, and one Betty was lost.

This enemy fleet is either on the way to Midway (unlikely as the fleet seems too small) or unloading at Layshan with the intent to build an airstrip there so P-38s can support an invasion of Midway at a later date. Zeros and Bettys will be cycled into Midway in an attempt to attrit the enemy carrier fighters. Generally we avoid attrition, but LBA versus carrier air is a good time to do it. Losses will likely be heavy in the next couple days. Once the enemy carriers retreat (assuming they do), Liz bombers will come to Midway and constantly bomb the island to slow airfield construction as long as possible. In the Home Island, training units are being converted to A6M2s and G4M1s to prepare to replace losses at Midway.

So you are accepting a battle of attrition at Midway? If that is the case I would use Army planes and save Navy pilots for the carriers. Just my 2 cents.

That's the plan in the long run, for the next week we'll chew up a lot of A6M2's, which are obsolete anyways. Most of the pilots are my trained replacements - 50-60 experience. The 70+ exp guys all go to the carriers. The Oscar IIa is the only army fighter I have that can reach Laysan from Midway (7 hexes). I'll bring in a couple Sentai of those shortly and they will escort Liz and Sally bombers - once the enemy ships leave. While the enemy ships are there, Bettys and Nells will be flying.

We've made it almost all the way through 1942 without taking any heavy losses air losses, other than the carrier battle at Johnston Island - if the losses here slow down any offensive against Midway, I think it is a good place to spend them. I agree though - army losses are better than navy losses - and Army planes will be at Midway within the next 2 weeks I'm sure.

I hate losing Navy pilots and in my game (late 43) I am out of trained ones and am being pressed hard enough that all my units are seeing decreased efficiency. If I could do over I would be much more conservative with my naval aviators. That's the reason I was kinda wondering about your Midway plans[:)].

I could be wrong of course, but hopefully I'll have time to build them back up. At present all my carrier fighters are full, so I do have a well trained navy pilot I can put into these Zeros every other day. I have lots of 40-60 pilots in Claudes training at Osaka, so most likely I'll clear out those units and fill them up with 30 exp guys. Once they hit 50-60 they don't gain much from training missions anyways.

I'm at Dec 2nd now, and I think I lost about 200 A6M2's over the course of the week. Took down a fair bit of F4F-4s and knocked out some ships as well. If his carriers come out to cover Laysan again in the next week or so, my KB should have a good XP edge since he lost many fighters at Johnson not so long ago, plus the fighters he lost this week.

Anyone have opinions on whether Musashi and Yamato should stay together or should once go to the Pacific and one head up the fleet at Singapore?

I tend to split them up and have operate as bullet sponges for Japan slower carrier groups.

I always keep one with Kaga and one with Fuso. Just going by speed.

Kaga, as in the carrier?

I think I'll split them up, but keep them in surface combat groups for now. I have enough faster battleships and cruisers to escort carriers.

Okay - so here is how I have arranged some of these big ships -

Yamato will head over to Singapore, and there will be matched up with Mutsu and the CA's Maya and Myoko. Maya is a Chokai class which just upgraded and now has an AA rating of 1218!! So that group will have good AA, plus 18" and 16" guns.

Mushashi will head to Kwajelein. Also, Kirishima, currently at Singapore, will go to Kwajelein, since it is a fast battleship and can be used to form an air combat TF. With Ryujo arriving I think I have 5 CVs and 5 CVLs at Kwaj. Chitose and Chiyoda just arrived at Osaka so they are all set to go into dry dock on Dec 31 for conversion to CVLs. I also expanded shipyards by 40 points to help cover the conversion of those two carriers.

I also have one of the Fuso's and a couple CA's at Rabaul in case some ships try to come up that way from Australia.

Some 30 destroyers are due for upgrades in January, so I'm still trying to figure out the best way to get those upgraded. Usually I send everything in ASAP, but that is a lot of destroyers to take out of action for 2 weeks. I might have to do them in two groups.

I should be able to get back to the daily updates this weekend.
