September 22nd, 1942 Airstrikes in China. Some replacements have arrived from the Osaka training units to keep the Lily II units filled. Otherwise, another quiet day.

September 23rd, 1942 As September marches on, so does the the Japanese army in China. The armor regiment that cleared the road moves south to Tuyun, while the Army marches down the road to Kweiyang. Our troops continue to rest at Hengchow and Tuyun. Singora airfield expanded today (sz 4). The port facilities at Soerabaja have been complete and now Soerabaja is a worthy sister port to Singapore. (sz 9) The large base will be useful in the defense of the lower DEI.

September 24th, 1942 Airstrike on Hengchow today. The 16th Av Rgt and 24th Air Flotilla HQ are moving to Changsha along with one sentai and one chutai of Oscars and one sentai of A6M2. From Changsha, once the airfield is large enough (currently size 3, about 95% to size 4), our fighters and bombers will begin flying against Chungking to finish off the Chinese airforce. The fighters may fly some sweeps before the bombers arrive, as they won't be available until Hengchow has been captured. September 25th, 1942 We launched a shock attack today against Hengchow and it was barely repulsed. (Adj AV's 890 vs 941) SS Shark was hit by Lily bomber in the Malacca Strait. Changsha, Iwo Jima, and Suva all expanded their airfields today. (sz 4 at all)

September 26th, 1942 Allied bombers return to Burma today! First a sweep of 19 AVG P-40E's over Mandalay was met by 8 Ki-44IIb Tojos. Our Tojos continue to do well, shooting down 3 AVG pilots for the loss of 1 of their own. They were then on hand to lay into 9 Liberator III and 26 B-24Ds that bombed Mandalay. 90% of the bombers were damaged and a couple did not make it home. Not bad for 7 Tojos. Some Hurricanes flew a sweep over Myitkyina, but our fighters from Lashio were not there due to bad weather. 39 Blenheim IVs, 22 Wellington III, 69 B-25C, and 12 B-26C bombed the airfields there but damage was surprisingly light and we have nearly 200 engineer squads there that will fix the place up quickly. The enemy bombers took a fair amount of AA damage and will probably rest a day or two before returning again. Through both strikes our only loss on the ground was a Ki-15 Babs recon plane since our fighters are based at Meiktila and Lashio - out of range of the British fighters, and long range for the P-40Es. September 27th, 1942 After a long dry spell, one of our subs scores a kill. I-121, one of our minelayer subs, was returning from dropping mines at Bombay and came across PG Shoreham. The sub hit the enemy ship with one torpedo which broke the ship in half, sinking it almost instantly. The strike consisted of 24 Liberator IIIs, 12 B-17Ds and 12 B-17Es. In China, over 50,000 of our troops are shelling the enemy troops at Kweiyang. There are about 20,000 enemy troops. In two days our first assault will be launched to allow a few more divisions to arrive. Lashio expanded its airfield today. (sz 4)

September 28th, 1942 Airstrike against Tuyun. An SNLF unit has cut the road between Chungking and Kweiyang, which will force any units that retreat to take the longer route through the mountains back to Chungking. Tomorrow we launch our first attack against Kweiyang. Supplies are low there, but we have a lot of troops.

September 29th, 1942 First assault on Kweiyang goes well. Fortifications are reduced and enemy casualties are higher than our own. Plus more troops arrive every few hours that pass. The only issue is lack of supplies. The base may indeed be ours tomorrow. (6 to 1, forts 8 -> 7)

About 70-90 I'd say, with a couple 95+ and a couple 50-60 in each unit. I spread the new guys out so that I don't have any units with all rookies. So far, since I've been able to avoid any fighting, I haven't lost many Army pilots. Most of these guys are vets from the start of the war.

For herbiesan: This is the unit that actually did the fighting on the 26th. A couple other units are higher experience, but you can see these guys have flown a few missions. September 30th, 1942 Betty bombers from Rangoon and Liz bombers from Camrahn Bay both hit Kweiyang as our troops attack. They made further progress (3 to 1, forts 7 -> 6), but due to low supplies were not able to capture the base today. A recent supply convoy unload 160,000 tons of supplies at Canton, but it has yet to make its way to the troops at Kweiyang. Eniwetok and Wallis Island airfield expanded today. (sz 3 and sz 4)

Most of the September action was on the ground in China. Only one ship lost and thankfully it was an Allied one. Air losses were light also, with the highest losses for Japan in light bombers and transports, and most of those are ops losses at that. The fight continues to go well in China, I'm up to Oct 21 in the game, so I am a bit behind again. Hopefully I'll get caught up over the next few days. October 1st, 1942 October starts well! In China, along with the normal air attacks on Hengchow and Kweiyang, our assault on Kweiyang easily took the city. (107 to 1) The 9th Group Army, 2 Chinese Corps, and a Chinese Air Base Force all retreated west towards Kunming since our troops occupy the road directly to Chungking. [image]http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj283/bfeurer/china53.jpg[/image] Major city captured in China Biak and Boela both expanded their airfields today (sz 1 and 2) Several major ships received new equipment today. Carrier Kaga received additional AA guns, while the battleships Hyuga, Kongo, Kirishima and Hiei all received additional AA and more importantly, Type 22 radar sets. Hopefully this radar will help us detect enemy ships. Akagi and two other battleships will return for upgrades once these five ships return to Kwajelein. October 2nd, 1942 In China, all bombing is concentrated on Hengchow for now. Some isolated pockets are also being worn down.

October 3rd, 1942 Additional troops are still on the way to Hengchow, but we will attempt another attack soon with the troops already there. Quiet in China today as our airplanes rest. Dutch sub KXV is hit, but not sunk, by a Ki-21-II Sally bomber southwest of Nicobar Island.

October 4th, 1942 The action shifted to Burma today as the Allies launched several air strikes. First, 24 B-17s and 19 Liberator III's attacked Magwe. 8 Tojo's on patrol from nearby Meiktila damaged nearly all the bombers but could not shoot any down. The airfields there were lightly damaged and one Ki-46II Dinah was lost on the ground. Next,38 P-40E's flew a sweep over Mandalay, meeting 7 Tojos and 10 Tonys, again flying from Meiktila. Then enemy lost 4 fighters to 2 Tojos. Next 65 B-25C and 12 B-6Bs came to bomb the base. Although reduced, our CAP of 3 Tojo and 5 Tony managed to bring down three of the bombers and damage 23 others. 4 more of the bombers went down due to flak. Damage was moderate, and 3 Ki-15 Babs were lost on the ground. [image]http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj283/bfeurer/burma49.jpg[/image] Enemy bombers shot down Finally, at Myitkina, 28 Blenheim IV, 32 Wellington III, 10 Liberator III and 26 B-24D's all attacked the base. There was no CAP to stop them, but damage was manageable. 1 J1N1-R recon plane was destroyed on the ground. Thankfully, since our fighters are back at Lashio and Meiktila, no fighters were lost on the ground. We will see if the enemy keeps these attacks going. All our bases in Burma have at least 180 engineers so damage will be repaired quickly. In the Pacific, AK Yukon hit a type 88 sub laid mine at Johnston Island. Although enemy minesweepers have been sweeping our mines regularly, we continue to drop them with two mine laying subs on an evenly spaced trip from Kwajelein (which has an MLE) and Johnston Island.

October 5th, 1942 27 A6M2 Zeros and 49 Ki-43-Ib Oscars flew sweep over Chungking to begin wearing down the Chinese air force again. Soon our bombers will need to hit Chungking, and the sooner we clear out their fighters the better. Our sweep met 22 P-43A Lancers, 10 I-16c and 10 P-66 Vanguards. We lost 7 Oscars and 1 Zero while shooting down 23 enemy aircraft. [image]http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj283/bfeurer/china54.jpg[/image] Reduction of the Chinese air force An attack against Hengchow gained ground (4 to 1, forts 8 -> 7) although our troops did get worn out a bit on the attack. At Tuyun, our assault there also gained ground. (2 to 1, fort 7 -> 6) In a pocket east, southeast of Chungking, the Chinese 11th Group Army surrendered providing us with about 700 POWs. Two more HQ units remain and should surrender soon. Goodenough Island near southern New Guinea expanded its airfield today. (sz 1)

October 6th, 1942 Attacks in China all gain ground. (Hengchow 4 to 1, forts 7 -> 6...Tuyun 6 to 1, forts 6 -> 5) About 50,000 Japanese army troops follow the Chinese west from Kweiyang. Today they caught and attacked the 9th Group Army, forcing the unit to retreat again. Palau airfield expanded today. (sz 5)

October 7th, 1942 Today our Sallys, Lily IIs, and Liz bombers all hit enemy ground units at Hengchow, and although our attack moved forward, it did so only just barely. Our troops there clearly need a rest and will not attack tomorrow. (Today's attack: 2 to 1, forts 6 ->5) Our bombers will change targets to Tuyun for tomorrow and our troops will launch a Shock attack to try and decisively finish the battle there. Also in China, several units crossed the river northwest of Ichang, easily pushing back the enemy Chinese Corp stationed there. (35 to 1) We should be able to force the surrender of this surrounded unit fairly soon. October 8th, 1942 Our attack on Tuyun was successful! (8 to 1, forts 4) 18,500 POW's were taken and one of the units that surrendered was the NCAC HQ unit. We now have a road rated supply line all the way to Kweiyang, so the bulk of our army will now be well supplied. The units at Tuyun will move to Kweiyang immediately and then rest and receive replacement squads there. October 9th, 1942 In the pocket southeast of Chungking, the final enemy unit there surrendered today. The unit was identified as the 4th War area HQ unit. Our troops resumed the fight at Hengchow, but weather kept our planes from assisting. Still, our troops made some progress. (1 to 1, forts 5 -> 4)

October 10th, 1942 Weather again hampered our air units in China. Our attack there continues to wear down the defenders. (1 to 1, forts 4 -> 3) Suva airfield expanded today. (size 5)

October 11th, 1942 22 Zeros and 50 Oscars flew sweep over Chungking today, meeting 7 P-43A, 7 I-16c and 4 P-66. 13 of the enemy planes were shot down, and 1 Oscar was lost. West of Kweiyang, our army troops again caught the 9th Group Army inflicting more casualties and forcing it to retreat again. A Chinese Guerrilla unit was forced to retreat across the river to Chungking southeast of the city. Hengchow was very nearly taken today as our air units finally were able to lend support to the attack. Our troops are nearly exhausted, but the enemy is more so and likely low on supplies. October 12th, 1942 Hengchow continues to hang by a thread, but should crumble any day now. (3 to 1, forts 2 -> 1) The 26th Chinese Corp surrendered in the pocket northwest of Ichang. We now have a trail supply route to the eastern side of Chungking.

October 13th, 1942 Hengchow finally is captured! (21 to 1, fort 1). A tremendous amount of enemy soldiers are captured and disarmed, 102,000 of them approximately. Along with the units shown below, China Command HQ, 9th War Area, 19th Group Army and 20th Group Army HQ's all surrendered. [image]http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj283/bfeurer/china58.jpg[/image] Many Chinese surrender at Hengchow Today's sweep over Chungking met some good Chinese pilots. 27 Zeros and 48 Oscars met 7 Lancers and 6 I-16cs, but these P-43A's knew their stuff and downed 4 Oscars and 1 Zero. We got nearly all of them though, 6 to be exact, so hopefully those good pilots are no more.

The capture of Hengchow has brought about the end of Operation Joukai. The operation went very well in my opinion. Goals: Capture Liuchow - this occurred much easier than expected. Prevent Chinese counter attack at Tuyun - Successful Bring Northern China Army across the river near Ichang - Successful and much easier than expected. Due to this success, and the success of the SAA against Liuchow, most of the NCA forces were able to move on Kweiyang, forcing several fleeing units back to Hengchow where they later surrendered. Capture Hengchow - Successful Remove Southern Area Army from the theater by end of September - Not successful. Thankfully the British made no moves in Burma yet, so the SAA should be able to redeploy in time to meet any threats in Burma or Malaya. The situation in China is now very good. Chungking is about 35% surrounded, nearly all resource centers were captured intact and we are expanding the HI in Changsha to make use of the extra oil/resources floating around the interior of China. We also now have a road rated path from Singapore to Korea. Kunming is the next target, and with luck will be easy to capture. Once that base is ours, we will have a trail rated short path from China into Burma completely under our control. Once Kunming is captured, we will attempt to cross the river to the west of Chungking and then move a holding force into Chungking, while another force moves northwest and captures Chengtu. An aviation unit is being airlifted from Sian to Kweiyang and most of the air units will be rebased there to be close to Chungking. It is possible enemy 4 engine bombers from Burma will attack, but we'll move in some Nick's if that occurs. Liz bombers will stay in Changsha. First target will be the airfield in Chengtu. Then we will begin escorted bombings of Chungking until the airfield of that base are unusable, then our bombers will continue to fly unescorted.

October 14th, 1942 Our SAA troops begin marching from Hengchow to Canton, the rest begin heading towards Kweiyang. Otherwise it was very quiet today.

October 15th, 1942 Liz and Lily bombers make the short flight from Changsha to the swamps north of the city and bomb the Chinese pocket there. These bombers will soon move up to Kweiyang and bomb Chengtu.

October 16th, 1942 Our fighters and bombers have rebased to Kweiyang. The Liz bombers are still in Changsha. Everything will hit Chengtu tomorrow. We haven't swept that base for a while, and recon indicates some bombers are at the airfields there. Naga (Philippines) and Picton (New Zealand) both expanded their airfields today. (sz 4)
