Tim41 -> Points before explanation by Cguy (2/19/2008 3:21:53 AM)

My friend will arrive shortly and provide specs for the XP's and the laptop XP. Here's some relative points:
1) When installed (JTCS), the older games were in the same XP's.
2) I was warned by my friend (aka 'computer guy') that problems could occur as one forum member pointed out-because of number 1.
3) We discovered some of the problems play testing the new version the first day. Some of those experienced Jason did know about and explained would be fixed in the 1.03 version. After a lot of reading as problems came up....the time we spent became excessively expensive. I sent him home so I could explore these more.
4) I became frustrated and want to play the old games-have problems because of the new installation.
*I would like site info for the older patches in case I ever run into the crash problems you discuss in the old version-I honestly never ran into these and now am worried. I will not apply the patches to the old game-but at least will have a clue should said problems happen. Could you please advise?
5) I will play the new version to play test it in the separate XP in order to comply with a promise to one of the other forum members here and will advise if I run into the same problems. This may take time as the crashes in JTCS occured in the 2nd battle of a DC game. It may be hard to engineer the same results so that I can find some cavalry to attack at close range immediately. I'll give it a fair try.
6) The goal here is to not load the old and the new in the same computer. It may work for some but at this point time is money and the goal is playability of at least the old with no problems (OR at least those problems that were always there). This will require some more playing time with the older version to discover any errors there.
-OK-the next email will be the specs on the XP's and laptop XP in my guys own words and his explanation of his method of prior installation and curent. I really hope we find something of value before I leave the forum. It may be that we did indeed screw something up. Please-feedback welcome. I will remove myself from the forum AFTER I live up to my word here. It's not personal from me either.

Tim41 -> DDL problem (2/19/2008 4:45:58 AM)

Scott Gibson mentioned is correct. May cause the old game crashes per my friend.

Scott's post...

You have 2 version of the game installed? Since they are going to use the same DLL and other management files, you are probably causing these problems your self.

... is questioning if you have two installs of JTCS on the same machine. Hence the DLL and other management file issue he suggests.

Not if you have both the Talonsoft and JTCS installed on the same machine.

Tim41 -> RE: DDL problem-Bigger problems (2/19/2008 7:05:26 AM)

Understood and no.
We unloaded the games (both) completely from the systems and reloaded the older versions in one XP and laptop and new in another XP. When we restarted the old version, names were saved showing old commanders but with .ccd after the names! Same problems started again (could not load trucks in Campaign Setup, etc.).
We took out the folder and uninstalled everything again-loading again. OLD COMMANDERS GONE-All but .ccd (still showing up) appears to be working-loading vehicles ok in campaign setup.
WHAT IS A WONDER IS IF THEY (THE OLDER VERSIONS) ARE COMPLETELY TAKEN OUT-WHY ARE MY SETTINGS SAVED? SHOULD START WITH MUSIC BACKGROUND, DETAILS SET ON LOW, CHOICE OF OPTIONAL RULES, ETC. ALL WAS BEFORE REMOVAL???? Still with the .ccd instead of saving just the name.
We are loading on a brand new laptop but it's VISTA.
On the laptop, WFII CP is crashing-we think it could be a hard drive error. The others (old version EFGII and RSGII) seem to work now-same .ccd after the name?
Overall-not going good: thoughts>?
Also-about to check the JTCS on the other XP. Will advise (patch apllied).

Tim41 -> New GAme crashing in the other XP (2/19/2008 7:08:56 AM)

It's not going good at all. The new JTCS is now crashing in the other XP immediately.
Doubt it's a hardware problem. Looking into it.
Advice needed!

Tim41 -> Took out Registry (2/19/2008 7:18:22 AM)

On WF on laptop-started to load correctly with the Details on los, music, etc.
THEN- Problem with the laptop-it's crashing. Operating System issue. NOT WFIIG's fault.
On the XP with the old games-we are gonna take out all again-including registry entries and try again on that front!
This is like a battle in itself...will I get Ex points in the end?

Did you update the new install?

Don't forget, in addition to the 1.02 UPDATE there is a temporary 1.02B patch available here:

Tim41 -> Final Report for the night (2/19/2008 8:19:43 AM)

*Older Version Reinstalled: On one XP-Seems successful in that loading in set-up allowed, no crashing (so far), units scattered from their organization as before in set-up. Computer asking 'new user' questions (i.g. Options, Details set at low, Music instead of Background, etc.)
-The only difference (no play testing done) so far is that a saved leader in campaign mode still displays ".cdd" after the officer's name. This never occured before.
THIS APPLICATION NOW MUST BE TEST PLAYED IN CAMPAIGN MODE (ALL THREE) TO SEE IF THERE ARE ADDITIONAL ERRORS, CRASHES, ETC.
*Laptop XP:
This is a problem. HDD crashed and burning like a Stuart discovering AT guns....We are installing a faster hdd and adding more rem-all that can be done to the little ACER for now. I am advised against purchasing VISTA for now due to the problems with that new system. We'll just up the ACER's cabability for the time being.
*New Version: Crashed-Patch applied at install but not 1.02B-not listed under Patches. Did not know until your email this option was available: first I have heard of 1.02B.
Conclusions for the evening:
My friend needs to go home after 4 1/2 hours-it's 10:07PM and neither of us have had great sleep or food (my fiancee's Dad is in ICU and NO-whoever asked-I aam not sleeping-not lookng for sympathy: yes, I'm an ass by nature-comes with being Irish). He'll (computer guy) will be hear WED. and we intend to load a minimum of games on the ACER in it's revamped form. Pretty much one flight sim and the three original Gold versions (2000-2001?).
There is nothing I can do about JTCS until then but input is desired. I can only test play the older versions on XP #2 to see if the crashes/problems still remain. I'll just fit it in somehow.
I can only advise on the playability of the older versions and pray they work until the weekend. ANY ADVICE ALONG CONSTRUCTIVE LINES FOR INSTALLATION AND PROBLEMS DESCRIBED BEFORE WED. WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Thank you all.

Warhorse -> RE: Final Report for the night (2/20/2008 1:33:16 AM)

Hey Tim, are you manually taking out the physical folder in windows explorer also, if not, your saved games will be intact, as well as any settings! Just checking...

Tim41 -> Folder removed+ note for Jason (2/20/2008 11:01:28 AM)

The older version started clean after this (no saved games or officers and regular start up choices). Play testing now. The only funky thing about the old version is the officer in campaign mode is saved as "so and so.ccd". The .ccd never showed on any installation prior to the reinstall. They were not saved-I refer to new officers. No real way to see if it's working except to continue play test. The good thing is the little things about the old version appear to be as was. The units in set-up mode are helter skelter-a truck here, the unit it carries by itself. etc. It needs at least three DC battles fought to see if there's gonna be a problem.
On the JTCS XP install, we had an immediate crash. There were no prior versions of the game in the system. We hope the 1.02b (this is not listed under patches for the game by the way so I never knew it existed before Jason's email) will correct things and will apply in the morning. Unfortunately, I don't think my personal problems with the new issue will be resolved enough to make the new version usable until 1.03. Just got to get the old version working again for now.
JASON-On the issue of the mounted cavalry that crashes the game, I forgot to mention that just prior to the cavalry crash, one infantry unit (enemy) fired on the same unit involved in close quarters with the cavalry from more than one hex range. Sorry for the omission. This is not someting new with the game is it? Infantry should still only be able to fire on armor in an attached hex, correct?

Depends on the infantry unit. Attaching the save game files or a screenshot of the infantry unit in question would be helpful.

Tim41 -> You don't know (2/20/2008 7:24:13 PM)

which infantry units have this new capability? If there are units capable of this then it should be in the manual-in this case it was a late war German Infantry platoon in the Storm On The Reich DCG. If I come across it again, I'll do as you suggest Sshoot it or attach the files. Also, I don't recall the engineering pontoon loading proceedure in the manual. Perhaps I missed it.
One thing I would have liked to see in the new game would have been the ability not only to replace loses in units in the Campaign mode as provided, but to consolidate units. If there were units left understrength after replacements then these should be able to be consolidated, at least within the immediate parent unit (i.g. platoons within a single company).

There are hundreds and hundreds of new and old units. One cannot be expected to know the details on all of them, of course.

Thanks, that would help.

It came after the original manual was released, it will be included in the 1.03 UPDATE manual.

That is a wishlist item.

Jason Petho -> RE: You don't know (2/20/2008 7:44:31 PM)

As an example, there are 675 German different platoons for East Front. (Counted in 1.03)

Tim41 -> Really trying to make helpful sug. (2/20/2008 9:27:34 PM)

That field could be narrowed to just the one I suggested: a late war standard German Infantry Platoon, Strength 6. We've narrowed it to an infantry platoon, late war German and you were given a specific Campaign Scenario-Storm On The Reich. I think that narrows the field considerably. We're talking variation in an infantry platoon-not all units in the game.
Since I'll be off the Forum shortly, the wish list item is JUST a suggestion for future releases. The company is obviously using the forum also for market research (or should be).
Dude-you're a great and patient guy, but the promise of the 1.03 fix seems to be the number one answer to many of my questions. That's OK and honest. I'm just trying to pass along what I can and hope to bugger off your back by today for a heck of a long time!

There are a handful of German infantry platoon types available for late war. A screenshot or save game file can identify rather quickly which is the culprit. A save game file would be ideal as I can track down the specific platoon number and see the overall situation.

A quick check of the weapon file shows everything is in order.

There may have been a soft target in the same hex?

Merely emphasizing the magnitude of the Series and my inability to know everything about everything - although I do try!

There is an excellent location for wishlist items. Your suggestion would get lost if not placed in the relevant location.

For the issues that you raised, they were on the hitlist for 1.03 and with its impending release it seems to be the logical answer.

Tim41 -> No soft targets! (2/20/2008 10:20:22 PM)

The range was beyond that capability also. The units attacked were the tanks attacking the cav unit from the rear. A late war German infantry platoon attacked from at least 3 hexs away? No soft targets in the hex at all. None anywhere close. It was strange sequence which I tried to repeat and still it lead to the crash.
Once my guy gets here, we have to reload the laptop with numerous applications (which most I get for free-M. Office, etc.). We WILL limit the games reloaded in the laptop to the three original and a few others (no more than say 6 games in all). Unfortunately, JTCS cannot be one of them for the time being as the older versions are more important to me at the moment.
The 1.02B will be applied to the stand alone JTCS XP in which it was enetered-thanks. Be in touch early in the process as he will be here for a while and perhaps if we do run into further trouble, you will still be on line. I'll try it for a few games of Campaign Play just to see what else I can discover before I put it aside for the 1.03-if it's working and not crashing.
My hopes for the new version are great. It's always been my number one game, and it was like Christmas to see another upgraded version. Like Christmas...toys don't come with batteries which is a bumber because you want to play with them but have to wait! 1.03 are those batteries and I just gotta hold my pee! Damn it Mom and Dad!

Tim41 -> Wow-looked like there were a lot more (2/21/2008 4:41:54 AM)

hits on the subjects I broght up, but now I cannot find them! Went in and out of site....they seem to be missing, should be about four pages at least. A couple had some questions I wanted to explore...? Many were seen after the last entry? Probably a fault on my end.
Report to follow on today.

Tim41 -> Reload Successful-Old Version (2/21/2008 4:56:23 AM)

On both the dedicated XP and the Acer. Seem to be working fine.
On the XP with the new game (JTCS), we applied 1.02b and it did not crash! Yeah. The problems previously mentioned were still there-at least the organization of German units. It is a description error as stated before and the units appear correctly. One major clue to this is the 6th Panzer showed up in the unit organization of CG Barbarosa North. The tanks were Chec as historically correct per Raus.
JASON-You have done your best by me. We (on this end) have made sure that JTCS stands alone and is ready for 1.03. Nothing more can be done at this point. Those problems which have been mentioned appear to still be there-BUT I WILL PLAY TEST IT ONCE. If I can be of CONSTRUCTIVE help from this point on I will be. Other than that, I will enjoy the older versions and thank you for your efforts.
I look forward to 1.03 and am glad there are still so many players of such an outstanding wargame. Gotta suck it up and wait. Thank you again and will advise if anything is REALLY applicable to the new game. I include in that previous SShots and savings as requested-if I run into them.
Good luck,
Tim41

Tim41 -> If I have been harsh... (2/21/2008 5:31:02 AM)

at least you all got a break...
My friend Chris McQuarrie wrote Valkyrie for Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner.....he was recently told to rewrite the ending by Paula Wagner...because Tom can't die??????? I met her the other night at the opening of the Eye. Jesus, I wish I had some explosives with me....I would have done her right there.
I love Chris, but Night Of The Generals was better....
