PunkReaper -> New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/9/2008 10:17:45 PM)

Since there has been an outpouring of emotion about the need for a new turn based Medieval/fantasy game from Matrix in numerous threads I thought I would bring the campaign into one thread. Lets stand up in our armour and raise our magical swords and say enough WW2, enough Civil War, enough Napoleonics, let this be the year of the knight, the castle siege and if we have to, of the elf..... Come on Matrix cross the drawbridge, you know you want to!

Goblin -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/9/2008 10:27:59 PM)

Seconded! [8D]

I'm all for it. Doesn't have to be fantasy even. How about - Tin Soldiers: Philip the Great or TS: Joan of Arc, or Saladin, or anything not WWII!

I umpteenthed if that helps any. ;) Joel's the only one I've heard say he has an active interest in doing something outside of WW2 ho hums. Gary won't do it, it has to be historical lol. KOIOS tried, but, Matrixgames foiled that line of games that I thought I saw coming out of them after Tin Soldiers:Caesar. I find it hard to believe with the high selling game like RTW that ancients aren't popular according to Erik et al. If done right they damn sure are popular. :) Would still like to see Gil and company do one like they did the civil war one. Hopefully one day they'll get to do at least one.

PunkReaper -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/9/2008 11:28:08 PM)

Erik are you listening to the cries of the multitude? Put away your AK47 and pick up your sword. Your audience is screaming out for something different, dont hide in your concrete re-inforced bunker, climb the castle towers, raise that banner and produce the game we all want!!!

Grell -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 12:22:22 AM)

Hehe, yeah a god medieval game would be nice.

Regards,

Grell

How about a remake of Kingmaker then? Superb boardgame so so adaption.
Well no, not a remake but a game resembling Kingmaker ;).

How about Medieval Kingdoms, that old SSI game?
Or maybe it was Medieaval Lords, forgot the exact name but it was
the best attempt until Lords of the Real arrived, then CK.

A game combining the best of those three would be a winner :).

Warfare1 -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 1:19:58 AM)

While you're waiting, there are plenty of medieval scenarios in Civ2:

The latest one:

AN EXCELLENT REVIEW OF ALL CIV 2 MEDIEVAL SCENARIOS:

Civ II is old I want something NEW ;)

marcusm -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 1:54:03 AM)

Problem with all those scenarios (including CivIV), is that they end up being
a generic approach to this era.

Where is the Heraldry and Nobility? The marriages, the Plagues, Religion etc.

Let's face it. Best game would be something that combines
Lords of the Realms(using MTw2 graphics for battles prefably) and CK obviously.

Maybe Rise of the West also?

What was the name of that old SSI game I talked about? It had a very complicated menu system.

Btw. Did anyone see the latest pictures from Paradox Rome game? They finally got that
engine to look good. Now they HAVE to make CK2 :).

ravinhood -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 1:58:33 AM)

But, I want a turn based wild west game also. Like Avalon Hills "Gunfight" I think it were. That was pretty kewl game.

I absolutely agree :)

However, for some reason those NEW turn-based epic Roman and medieval games are nowhere to be seen [&:]

PunkReaper -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 12:40:04 PM)

I agree with Ravinhood, something new is needed. The old Kingmaker game had the look and feel of the time but with old game mechanics. Newer boardgames such as Warrior Knights and George RR Martin's Game of Thrones have brought new improved mechanics so a combination of these games would be great.
I think Civ 2 and Civ 4 are good games in their own right but are no substitution for a proper medieval game.

marcusm -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 2:04:53 PM)

The combat system in Lords of Realm II remains the most realistic
portrayal of Medieaval combat in my book. Sure, MTW2 looks stunning but it still feels very generic.
If one could have a similar graphics engine but use the mechanics from Lords of the Realm II then one would
have the perfect combination.

Btw. Don't forget Knights of Honor, it had some interesting ideas, not quite unlike Seven Kingdoms(even better system in fact). IE, the way
you could "plant" spies in other players armies etc. This is the sort of thing to spice up gameplay in my book.

marcusm -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 2:10:12 PM)

So. Here is a simple recipy for a succesful game.

1 tea spoon of MTW2 graphics
3 spoons game mechanics from Lords of the Realm II
1 Jug of ideas from Crusader Kings.
3 oz of ideas from Seven Kingdoms.
3 oz ideas from Knights of Honor.
Powder with random ideas from good boardgames like Kingmaker etc.

Mix and stir, cook for about 1.5 years, making the perfect Medieaval Game [:D]

ravinhood -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 2:12:46 PM)

Why do I have visions of David and Erik sitting in their offices reading this and LAUGHING AT US? ;)

PunkReaper -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 5:18:00 PM)

Cos they can't cook?

PunkReaper -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 5:24:00 PM)

Also there has been total silence from Erik and David which isn't a good sign..... more WW2, Civil War (only American as they appear to be the only ones who had a civil war) or Napoleonics this year then?

invernomuto -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 6:49:39 PM)

My ideal game: medieval / fantasy turn based tactical game with strategic elements. Tactical battles should be at regiment level (like warhammer) with formation and morale taken into account.
Isometric 2d graphics (with hexes like HPS Punic wars???) would the best for me, no 3d plz, it's easy to get confused with 3d battlefield and units (but they're really nice to see).
Anyone else interested :) ?

PS
This game could have a Fantasy setting (with magic&mages, elves, dwarves and so on...) and a historical medieval one. Each setting and armies could be loaded from separate data files. It could attract the (large) warhammer community that
do not have on their PCs anything similar to their miniature game (warhammer and W40k themed PC games are RTS). I think there could be a market for a similar game...
PPS
Hope to explain my thoughts, sorry for my english :(

PunkReaper -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 7:16:05 PM)

much much better than my Italian.

marcusm -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 7:52:11 PM)

It actually sounds a bit like the upcoming Kings Bounty. Unless I misunderstood.
Are we talking about miniature gaming?

Hell. I am interesting in just about everything so I am not too picky ;).
I mean everything that isn't yet another Bulge game hehe.

And since we have an Italian here. Don't forget Machiavelli. Great boardgame and great source material to base any kind of game on (meaning the book) ;).

The Swedish boardgame Svea Rike is also a good source, forget the version Paradox made, had little to do with the boardgame.

marcusm -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 7:58:28 PM)

Yep. I like Panther Games but that game engine just isn't for me I have found out (or did when it was at Battlefront).

freeboy -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 8:01:59 PM)

I am thinking an at version could work..

marcusm -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 8:03:29 PM)

Thought about that too but it would require extensive modding.

I hope Rennaissance counts as Medieaval too here. I am watching the Tudors and
wondering why they are so few games covering this period. Only EU I know off and that trading game.

ravinhood -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 8:04:32 PM)

You know if those Panther games were turn based with those types of maps and icons an all they would be awesome and I bet sell really well. [:'(]

marcusm -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 11:40:57 PM)

Have you guys seen this one?

[image]http://www.gamershell.com/static/screenshots/3013/281993_full.jpg[/image]

XIII Century: Death or Glory, a 3D RTS that combines Risk-style global strategy game play with real-time tactical action (thanks: The Patches Scrolls). Developed by Unicorn Games Studio, the game immerses players in the Middle Ages, into a world of noble knights and ruthless nomads, a world of courageous deeds and internal wars. As a leader of one of the European nations in the XIII Century, gamers are tasked to test their steel against the neighboring nations and carve their names into history. Among the playable factions are the French, the English, the Germans, the Russians, the Spaniards and others. Gamers have to defend the crown against such nations as the Mongols, the Prussians, the Scotch

Sounds a bit like MTW 1 to me. But looks about as good as MTW2. Sounds like a potential winner :).

More pics here. Looks pretty f.ing awesome to me :).

More goodies here. Sounds better and better.

# Over 30 battles in 5 campaigns. Famous battles that changed the face of medieval Europe: the battle of Bouvines (July 27, 1214), the battle of Falkirk (July 22, 1298), the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (July 16 1212), the battle on the Lake Peipus (April 5, 1242) and many others
# Additionally the game includes several battles, which have never been featured in PC games before, such as the battle of Gelheim (July 2, 1298), battle of Taillebourg (July 22, 1242), etc
# Historical reconstruction. Real conditions of renowned battles such as landscape, time of day and weather conditions are taken into account
# Authentic heraldry of European aristocracy. Over 60 famous historic personalities in the game, including Philip II Augustus, Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, Edward I, Alexander Nevsky, Daniil Galitsky, Simon de Montfort, William Marshal and many others
# Dozens of unit types: heavy knights, cavalry and foot soldiers, archers, arbalesters, lance knights, darters, axe warriors as well as many others
# National specialty of troops: French knights are unequalled in mounted battles, Welsh archers are experts in forest fighting, Mongolian cavalry is lightning-fast and maneuverable, Italian arbalesters are the best shooters in Europe
# Weapons, arms and equipment of knights are made using historical documents and specifications
# Unique battle system taking into account 80 parameters and characteristics, which allow complete authenticity of medieval battle on the unit level
# State-of-the-art shader graphics with astonishing level of refinement and veracity

If it has strategic multiplayer then I am in heaven. Please let it be true.

marcusm -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/10/2008 11:58:20 PM)

Managed to find some city pics. These walls make the mtw2 ones look smallish ;).

[image]http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2007/192/920458_20070712_screen020.jpg[/image]

Only worry is that it is too abstract. I am not a huge fan of "nations" in Medieaval times but I guess this is the abstraction level that works for most.

cdbeck -> RE: New Medieval Game from Matrix (2/11/2008 12:15:05 AM)

Something like Battlelore ported to the computer would be pretty good. BTW many fans over at AGEOD really like the new Montjoie! boardgame port. Fairly abstracted, but quick and fun. Fantasy Wars was fun, but a bit repetitive and apparently has no random map feature!?

We are lacking that really good, fairly detailed medieval game. I want something with the dynastic features of Crusader Kings, the strategic map of Medieval 2:TW, the turned-based combat of Tin Soldiers or Fantasy Generals, with the economic/political strategy of Patrician 3 or Machiavelli. Is that too much to ask? [:'(]

Seriously, where is my WitP for medieval?

13th century looks interesting, but I am afraid (since the publisher is 1C and the game has Russian connections) that the translation will be terrible or the game a bit wonky (think Parkan 2 or Space Rangers 2).
