Nomad -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/22/2009 12:19:03 PM)

I am really having problems getting tracker to load. My database is over 415MB now with about 240 game turns loaded. I don't get any errors, it just doesn't seem to finish loading. Often, after letting it try for 10 minutes or so, I can close it, reopen it and it will then load in 3-4 minutes. Any ideas about this? Am I going to have to delete the DB and start over? To be sure, this is the load of the database. The turns load just fine with no errors at all. And I get no errors when the db doesn't load in a reasonable time.

n01487477 -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/22/2009 1:26:34 PM)

Nomad - you are the tip of the sword when it comes to testing ... I'm sure that neither Floyd nor I have ever had that many turns loaded. Java has a reputation as a resource hog and not cleaning up memory after itself, not that this seems to be that problem. I can't tell you anything if there are no error messages during the load ... It'd be nice to have a copy of that DB, so we could do some testing -- but the size is rather large even for email. Guess we could do a peer-to-peer connection and download it or if you have web-space... Anyway, let Floyd have a look at your message and see whether he can come up with anything before we talk about this ...

There is an awful lot of information we are saving - but we will keep thinking and working to achieve a more optimized program. I'd zip the trackerdb.* files and keep them for now and start a fresh DB until we can either have a look or come out with a new version and see if it is any better ...

Damian

Nomad -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/22/2009 2:09:41 PM)

I can send it to you as 7 or 8 volumes. I am using 7-zip which is a free download if you don't have it.

I will wait to see if you want me to send it to you. compressed the file is only 63MB.

BTW, my memory is bad, I have 328 turns loaded. [8D]

Roger Neilson II -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/22/2009 8:19:16 PM)

I am suffering also. It could be problems with my PC of course, but I run a batch file with tracker and WITP loading from the commands. The game takes a significant load time now - 10 minutes or so, and tracker seems to lag behind by a good ten minutes on that. I suppose I could load them separately and see if that makes a difference,

Fired up tracker to check on number of turns it is holding and its taking about...... 17 minutes.

Database is 273 MB witha 91 MB backup file. 249 turns in there.

I did the increase Java memory thing a month ago and since then it hasn't stalled in loading.

floydg -> RE: WitPTracker Load times (3/23/2009 3:25:20 AM)

Guys -

In reference to the load times, hanging, etc., I will admit that the program was not initially designed for such a large database. I thought of many things when I did the initial database design, but I guess I didn't anticipate everything. I do have some ideas which could speed up the load times, as I'm starting to notice it myself on my database of 190 turns.

Right now I'm working on adding the export to comma-separated files for import into Excel/scalc/etc for other analysis and printing. When I finish with that, my next item is the LCU upgrade stuff. Then I'll look at the performance. When I'm ready for that, I'll ask for Nomad's mega-file.

Thanks for your patience.

Floyd

Nomad -> RE: WitPTracker Load times (3/23/2009 3:35:31 AM)

I may just save what I have and do a restart. I was thinking that if I load the last 10 turns or so and then continue on I would be ok. Most of the important things are what has happened lately not so much what happened on turn 1.

Roger Neilson II -> RE: WitPTracker Load times (3/23/2009 7:52:28 PM)

I wonder...... could the saves be thought of as chapters?

I start again and call it soemthing else, but I have the previous one if I want to look back?

Playing a game I suspect there are key turning poiints where this could be a sensible break, or alternatively save a year at a time?

Just a thought, now tell me how stupid I am.

Ambassador -> RE: WitPTracker Load times (3/23/2009 10:20:26 PM)

I've begun using two databases : one that I update daily, and another that I update every few days.  If you set upon updating the secondary DB once a week (I do it on the 1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd of every month), it drastically cuts down on the size of the database.  Useful for the general long-term views.
The daily-updating DB is changed after three to four months, once there's what I consider as a lull in activity.  Archiving the database for later peek is not taking too much hard-drive space, and it is mostly a simple security.
The only difficulty is that you need several folders to access all of them easily.

Not a bad idea, but I'd like to fix the real issue, which is how I read the information from the database.
I spent a long time working on how the information is stored, but not much time on how it is retrieved. The size of the database isn't really the issue - the way I read it is.
I think the runtime memory issue is really just a function of the number of units and what each unit has (devices, pilots, etc).

Nomad -> RE: WitPTracker Load times (3/24/2009 1:08:19 AM)

Floyd, don't beat yourself up over this. One of the rules we used when I was programming was "Make it work right first, make it work fast last."

Roger, I am not sure you can get a year into the database. I think about 8-9 months and things start to slow down a lot. I saved my DB and started a new one with the last 10 days. Seems to be fine, and I have the information I need. I will probable run for another 5 or 6 months and do it again. Things will be getting interesting then.

[:-] After 20+ years working on large-scale systems for telecommunications carriers, I've found that if you don't design in performance from the get-go, it's not simple to add it in later. Unfortunately, I've seen your rule in action way too many times and it has taken many hours of re-architecting to fix the problem.

Of course, for what you're paying for WitPTracker, it's well-worth the wait... [;)]

USSAmerica -> RE: WitPTracker Load times (3/24/2009 3:07:53 PM)

And well worth the price!  [:D]  [sm=00000436.gif]

Marc -> request (3/24/2009 9:34:42 PM)

Hi Damian and Floyd,

a big thank you to both of you for this very helpful tool.

In the Task Forces Dataset you added the fields "Label" and "Notes". It would be great if these were available for LCUs and Air Groups too, since they really help in planning.
I really look forward to the export to csv function.

Marc

Chris21wen -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/27/2009 1:51:05 PM)

Supply sources

Is there any way to find this out using tracker?  I'm just started a new Stock game and i can't remember were all the supply source are?

n01487477 -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/27/2009 1:54:37 PM)

Chris - do you mean your opponents Res Cntrs and HI ? If so you should just load up the scenario V AI and save the file. Load the file as the opposition ...

As I answer a few questions on production regarding different mods I have a few files Dec7 which I can load up quickly...

Chris21wen -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/27/2009 2:53:00 PM)

No.  I can see the resource centre its supply sources.  For instance karachi produces 15000 supply per turn.

Misconduct -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/27/2009 3:08:25 PM)

I only wish I can get WITP tracker to even work, think Vista64 is hostile against it. I gave up trying to work it and WITP decoder.

Grotius -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/27/2009 3:33:02 PM)

Misconduct, Tracker works fine for me under Vista 64. I'm pretty sure Decoded worked for me too, but I haven't used it in a while. I'm not sure what I can suggest to help, though -- I just double click the .bat file and I'm good to go.

n01487477 -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/27/2009 3:35:16 PM)

Misconduct look at this thread ... http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=2064209

Chris do you mean micro-view ... not the macro, well at the moment it isn't included but as you can tell from my screen shot, it will be. (it isn't including the automatic supplies yet - but I'll sent you an xls file for stock if you wish when it's ready)

[edit] ok now it does the daily Supply as well ... Chris I just sent you the *.xls file... might as well add fuel production as well while I'm there ... getting busy again though!

Cheers
Damian

Misconduct -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/27/2009 5:14:18 PM)

ah thanks n0, finally got it working for once, I did everything right it was simply a Variable that didn't allow JAVA to execute commands, not allowing it to start. Appreciate the help, it works fine.

And I think the error you reported in the other thread must have come from WitpDecoder, since WitPTracker does not have any database integrity constraints in the tables (all of the checking is directly in the code).

Chris21wen -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/27/2009 8:41:46 PM)

Not what I'm after.  Some bases receive supply that does not come through hi or resources. In stock Karachi - 15000, SF -25000, etc.  Neither the game nor tracker seem to list this.  What the spreadsheet is showing is the total supply per day which is a combination of Supply source+resource+hi.

n01487477 -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/28/2009 12:19:23 AM)

Chris the game does show it and as I say in the attached pic ... why do you want the breakdown the supply to be into it's specific components? - there is no point IMO. The file I gave you shows the Daily Supply + HI + Res production of supply.

Damian

Thanks?

Chris21wen -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/28/2009 10:44:52 AM)

It's been a long time since I played stock an I could not remember where there were.  Knowing where there are helps (me anyway) determine where most of my supply is coming from and where I do/don't need to ship it to/from.  It also helps to determine where oil/resources are need most.  If the base generates supply through HI and resource then it's more likely to get a higher priority than a base (could be rail linked) that generates supply.  In CHS there are a number of bases for both sides that are a supply source. E.g Melbourne, Sydney, Darwin, Auckland to name just four.   Darwin doesn't have any industry but does generate supply so these types of base would get a lowere priority.

Having written all that it's no biggy, i thought I was missing something in the game/tracker but there again maybe it's the game that's missing something.

Chris21wen -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/28/2009 10:56:21 AM)

Actually I am missing something!  My version of tracker does not have the Supply/day column.

I'm using version 1.5

n01487477 -> RE: WitPTracker 1.0 (3/28/2009 11:09:20 AM)

OK Chris I take your point - but I thought that the supply&fuel tab and the Oil&Res tab were enough to make working that out fairly easy.

Yeah this build (I'm showing) hasn't been released yet, that is why I sent you an *.xls file... but if you look at this pic I've included a daily supply (this is stock) so you can take note of these bases and then plan your supply transportation ...

I guess I could have done all the work for you guys, but isn't that part of the fun of planning trade routes ?

MAARTENR -> RE: Happy New Year -- WitPTracker now at 1.5 (3/28/2009 11:34:46 AM)

Are where the - stand for? To less pilots?

[image]local://upfiles/11883/9D836C5BD1EB48E8884C486645314BAE.jpg[/image]

It are less but -293 are much. Isnt it?

n01487477 -> RE: Happy New Year -- WitPTracker now at 1.5 (3/28/2009 11:39:59 AM)

No the  "-"(minus) is where the British,US Navy and Marines air-groups have more pilots in these groups than are needed...once again this might be because of disbanding.

MAARTENR -> RE: Happy New Year -- WitPTracker now at 1.5 (3/28/2009 11:44:02 AM)

Could you maybe show it with another category? Sorry if i'm difficult.

Oversupply of pilots is probably a good thing, except when the pilot bug strikes ... but
we do show "insufficient pilots" in the AirGroups Tab ... What kind of category ?
